"(BIVN) – As the water level of a new, green pond at the Kīlauea summit crater continues to rise, scientists are keeping a close eye on the volcano.

On a recent episode of Island Conversations on KWXX radio, Sherry Bracken sat down with USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geophysicist Jim Kauahikaua for an in-depth discussion on the hot pond in Halemaʻumaʻu.

Bracken kicked off the talk by asking Kauahikaua where all that water is coming from?

“The water level is rising, slowly,” Kauahikaua said. “We can’t get real accurate measures of how fast it’s moving but we have a couple of indirect measures that suggest it’s rising at about, maybe, a yard a week.”

“The water is there possibly for two reasons,” he continued. “One is that it’s just rainfall collecting down there, in which case that should wax and wane with rainfall. The other is that this is actually the water table that was there, at a higher elevation, but got dragged down with the collapses of 2018. And it is now just, basically, rebounding after the collapse. It’s coming up to its former level, slowly.”

“So far, because the water level is rising steadily, and that it’s colored so it’s not like pure rainwater, the evidence is sort of leading towards ground water rebounding from the 2018 collapse,” Kauahikaua said. “From our observations it looks like it’s steadily rising, as opposed to going up and down with rainfall.”

Later in the interview, Kauahikaua explained how USGS has “a research drill hole that is about half a mile south of Halemaʻumaʻu, and so we know the water level in that well. And the lake will have to rise another 50 or so yards to be in hydraulic equilibrium with the water. So, if our hypothesis is correct that it’s groundwater that’s rebounding, that lake should rise to about that same level and then stall or stay there.”"

Pu'u 'O'o Overflight Reveals Hole In Crater Wall

"(BIVN) – During a recent overflight of the quiet Pu'u O'o event on Kilauea Volcano’s East Rift Zone, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory got a good view of the drained crater, where a 35 year-long eruption came to an end last year.

“Rubble from crater wall collapses has filled in much of the deeper part of the crater, with the bottom now at about 250 meters (820 feet) below the east rim,” the scientists noted. They also noticed something new on the eastern wall of the crater: an exposed hole."...

"BIVN) – Clear weather on Tuesday provided scientists with ideal conditions for observing of the water pond at the bottom of Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory posted more photos on its website, and reported that routine laser rangefinder measurements indicate that the pond continues to rise. “The rate at which the water is rising is estimated to be less than one meter (yard) per week, so day to day changes in the pond dimensions are subtle,” the scientists wrote."

(BIVN) – Last year, during the volcanic activity on the lower East Rift Zone, scientists with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory often found themselves answering questions about the Hilina slump, and tried to allay concerns expressed by the public that a “catastrophic failure event” would send a devastating tsunami across the Pacific. HVO assured the public that the likelihood of such an event was incredibly remote, even during the remarkable volcanic activity that occurred over the summer of 2018.

Kilauea volcano is no longer erupting, and has been quiet for a year. Now, scientists are revisiting the discussion in this week’s Volcano Watch."

"On Monday, the USGS HVO released a new video, showing views of the water pond recorded on Friday, September 6, and Monday, September 9. “Ripples are evident on the pond, presumably due to wind moving over the water surface,” the scientists noted. “No significant changes in the pond were observed over the weekend, and the water level continues to slowly rise.”

Scientists Post Mauna Loa Volcano Weekly Update

"In its weekly Mauna Loa update posted on Thursday, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that “rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly in the past week and persist above long-term background levels.”

“During the past week, approximately 90 small-magnitude earthquakes (all smaller than M2.5) were detected beneath the upper elevations of Mauna Loa,” scientists said. That’s compared to the approximately 49 small-magnitude earthquakes recorded the week before..."
