"(BIVN) – Highway 130 remains a visual reminder of the dramatic volcanic activity that occurred over one year ago on the lower East Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Carolyn Parcheta wrote about the area – which is still hot and steaming – in this week’s Volcano Watch article:

Even though Kilauea Volcano’s lower East Rift Zone eruption has been over for about a year, steam continues to appear in new places or reappear in old places, and vegetation continues to die because of lingering heat and steam in areas of the 2018 fissures.

Some residents are concerned about continuing (or potentially new) volcanic activity in the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) because they are feeling, seeing, and smelling the heat, steam, and odors that remain in the area. In fact, the most common questions USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) geologists who work in the LERZ hear are, “What is that smell?” “How much gas is still coming out?” and “How deep is the magma below me?” "

There aint a lot happening in volcano. Weather has been nicer since the volcano went out. Seasonal rains. Bad drivers. Meth heads wandering around the hirano family store.

I'm currently reading the link in above thread.

I believe that link has had several articles about the link between the volcano & PGV.

They brought up & of course, downplayed any explosions if the magma hits the water in the last articles I just posted.

Kilauea Crater Water Sampled With UAS Flyby

"On October 26, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory took an important step “in unlocking the secrets of this body of water”, a social media post from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park announced. “They launched a specialized unmanned aircraft system, UAS, that gathered photographs, gas measurements and a water sample from its scalding hot surface. Once the data is analyzed, USGS will announce its findings,” the post stated."

I see there were 2 - 2.5 quakes since on the Big Island.

I'm curious to see if they become more frequent. I just found the article that says PGV began drilling again in Oct. I know there are a lot of people from there that are convinced that is a bad idea.

PGV Plans to Begin Drilling on New Well

"According to a notice sent out to all Puna residents, PGV plans to commence drilling operations for the geothermal well Kapoho State on Oct. 18. The estimated completion date is Jan. 16, 2020."...

Sen. Russell Ruderman, who represents Puna and the town of Pahala in Ka‘u, told Hawaii News Now he believes drilling is still too dangerous.

“They’re taking a risk that wasn’t there before. The entire geological structure they’re drilling into has changed,” Ruderman told HNN. “Right now there’s lava still flowing underneath them that they’re going to drill into.”
Kaleikini couldn’t comment on what Ruderman said. However, he said PGV understands the risks of drilling rift zones and safety is their number one priority..."

Here's a video of the drone taking a sample of the water at the bottom of the crater, but not much more info. My guess is they're not going to release it.

We were unsuccessful in obtaining a direct measurement of the lake’s temperature, but recent measurements by a thermal camera on the rim of the crater indicate a maximum water temperature of 65-75 ° C.”"

Kilauea Volcano Monthly Update Comes With Detailed USGS Analysis

"BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano is not erupting, but scientists with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continue to keep a close eye on the summit and East Rift Zone for any changes in activity.

The alert level for Kilauea is currently NORMAL / GREEN, and scientists continue to say that “although we expect clear signs prior to the next eruption, the time frame of warning may be short.”

In this month’s Kilauea monthly update, released Thursday, November 7, the USGS HVO goes into detail about its observations. They wrote:..."

The man, reportedly in his early 70s, appeared to be trimming branches in his yard this week when he fell “through a soft area of ground” into a hidden lava tube on his property and died, according to a Wednesday statement from police on Hawaii’s Big Island. Rescue personnel discovered him resting at the bottom of the two-foot-wide lava tube, 22 feet below ground.

Ken Hon, a volcanologist at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, told The Washington Post he suspects that the hole was already there and that the man likely just didn’t see it ― possibly because it was covered in overgrowth. Plenty on the island are, Hon said. The tubes are everywhere: in neighborhoods and underneath streets, in forests and national parks, like an underground cave system right beneath your feet.

4.9 Earthquake On Mauna Kea Rattles Hawaii

"(BIVN) – A Magnitude 4.9 earthquake (upgraded from 4.7) shook the Big Island of Hawaii on Monday morning at 6:35 a.m. HST.

Early information shows the earthquake was centered on the east slope of Mauna Kea in the district of Hamakua, 12 miles southwest of Laupahoehoe, at a depth of about 8 miles. After the event was reviewed by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the depth was revised to 19 miles.

The USGS HVO website shows several aftershocks (smaller red circles in the image below) are occurring in the area, as well."
