Scientists warn Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano may erupt as earthquakes rattle area

Due to frequent low magnitude earthquake activity, officials are cautioning the public on the eastern side of Hawaii's Big Island to take safety preparations in case Kīlauea Volcano erupts.

"Hundreds" of small earthquakes have been reported over the last several days, according to CNN.

"Due to this activity, Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory (HVO) indicates an eruption is possible. Because it is not possible to predict where an eruption could occur, the areas that could be affected are Nanawale Estates, Leilani Estates or Kapoho," the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said in a statement.

On Thursday morning, the agency said there has been a slight drop in intensity since Wednesday. While an eruption remains possible, one is not imminent at this time.
