Illinois Coroner Holds Remains "Hostage" Unless Families Can Pay $1000
A western Illinois coroner is taking heat over how he handles the remains of those whose loved ones can't afford a proper burial: after signing over their rights to the body, he cremates the deceased and keeps the ashes until the family pays him $1,000 - at which point he'll release the death certificate. Of the $1,000, $800 goes to a funeral home and $200 to the crematory

They do the same thing in CA. Someone I know who was homeless with their wife just died a couple of weeks ago. They will not give the wife his ashes unless she pays.

They can't be cremating dead people for free. Cremate one dead person for free pretty soon everyone and their mom will expect free cremation of their dead person. Just sayin.

The government requires us to have a birth certificate. They give them to you for free. Therefore the Government should also give free death certs as well. Let the sick OLD bastard coroner keep the ashes if that's what he gets his nuts off on.
