Re: Looks Like California Will Require Solar Panels On New Homes & Low-rise Apartment Buildings
This is going to fuck up california even more. Private power producers are not going to want to do business in California, because only the BEST plants will get dispatched, meaning this will probably force a lot of plants to shutter. This means higher electric prices for EVERYONE because they will need to raise rates to remain in business. When they raise rates it fucks over the folks that don't have solar panels. Couple that with the fact that these fucking panels will add $50,000 to the price of a home, plus all of the other bullshit that CA requires, they are predicting all of this shit adding about $75-100k per home!!! Who the hell can afford any of that shit?? Seriously!

Once power producers leave the state, the state will have to nationalize it's power grid since no one will want to sell power in an unprofitable market (or the state will need to subsidize producers). If rates aren't allowed to raise to cover their production costs, they can't stay in business! CA = Venezuela!

Forcing people to purchase products should be illegal.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76537211

it should, but the legislative branch in comifornia all bought into the solar panel craze and they need to make sure they get their monies worth ...

these are the listed approved solar panel companies ...
these are the law makers who own shares in the above listed solar panel companies ...

Re: Looks Like California Will Require Solar Panels On New Homes & Low-rise Apartment Buildings
this is something i could get behind...

for years i have wanted to get a solar system for my home but the prices are too damn high!!

i can get the solar panels for around $3-4000 which is affordable but the battery bank cost $10,000+

I live in Nebraska. Do you have any idea the number of hail storms we get? Shit the sun barely touches my roof with my 100 ft trees surrounding my house. I'd love them if they had a more solid ROI. For now, it doesn't make sense with 20+ year paybacks.

The Tesla roof tiles will be released in selected areas this year. I hope to be installing them in the Caribbean this fall

...but are they going to spontaneously combust like the cars.

Maybe the powerwalls will. The tiles are amazing but you will have an $80,000 roof. They are not cheap

Re: Looks Like California Will Require Solar Panels On New Homes & Low-rise Apartment Buildings
The solar energy band wagon is not the holy grail you want it to be. If you use solar panels you must have battery backup or you will only have power during the day. You will require a large bank of batteries and other components for a operational system. Just the amount of environmental damage from the mining of the lead or other metals used in the batteries is huge. Also the batteries will have to be replaced after several years causing problems for the dumps from the chemicals. Solar panels can last up to 25 years so its not really the panels causing the problem.
 Quoting: Southern Man 1685967

I think the panels are a good idea. Every home should have them on their roof. Even with out a battery bank, you are still offsetting your bill by pushing power back to the grid and then using it at night. Some power companies fuck the home owner with policy that makes grid connection suck. As far as the battery bank, i have a 12 6 volt trojan t105 lead acid batteries for my battery bank and it works just fine. Cost for lead is sky high and makes it not worth it to some. They need to lift the restrictions on shipping lithium batteris due to safer shipping standards and requirements. Lithium is what makes a solar array worth it but the cost, once again, is artificially elevated due to stupid shipping requirments. Teslas new lithium battery factory just might bring those prices down....

Solar is for people who do not want to rely on the grid and are looking for independence ,reliability , and security. It only makes sense if you are going to live a minimalist lifestyle.
Here in Puerto Rico the power sucks , we lose power all the time and water. I would rather have less but have it consistently

Money and time better spent on requiring ALL shopping malls to have them.

Nothing but building with acres of parking and all they need to do is put panels over parking.

I was going to slam it but it is only 10k extra and will basically be free in energy savings.

It will be useful as we use more and more energy for electricity. I might let this one slide.

California moved a step closer Wednesday to requiring solar panels on new homes and low-rise apartment buildings starting in 2020, the first such mandate nationwide and the state's latest step to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"Adoption of these standards represents a quantum leap in statewide building standards," said Robert Raymer, technical director for the California Building Industry Association. "You can bet every other of the 49 states will be watching closely to see what happens."

-Less then 50%

I'm assuming this will add several thousand to a brand new home. In times people can hardly make ends meet. If it's made so, then we can for sure see all the Liberal states follow. Driving up housing costs. Then just a matter of time before existing housing will be mandated to 'upgrade'.
 Quoting: deanoZXT

Of course it's bad. This is just to keep California unemployment levels down by subsidizing a retarded industry. Every shitty contractor is installing solar.

One does not need battery backup.

Use the grid as your back-up unless you're off-grid.

We just signed up for a 8,700 Watt system doing just that.

We'll spend $16,000 net and it'll pay for itself in 11 years.

Plenty of small towns and large neighborhoods were leveled. Perfect for rebuilding.

Dumbass i didnt say anything about forcing people to go solar like obamascare.

As far as the freedom comment, the fuck you talking about? I would say im pretty damn free with my setup. Ya im connected to the grid for ac, hot water and shop stuff but everything else rins just fine from solar. Im my own power company. I have about 2k watts of solar and 12 6 volt trojan batteries. My solar panels are mounted on an old huge satalitte dish with the auto tracking.

Trivia:

For the record you can get top quality reasonably priced solar panels from LG in South Korea.

BTW.

Trump is exempting SK from tariffs.

Or you could buy American made with German Tech from places like Hillsboro Oregon. They're a little more expensive than South Korea but OK for price.
