Dog Treat Recall
Merrick Pet Care is recalling multiple beef dog treat varieties due to elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone.

The more contaminated treats a dog eats, the worst the symptoms will be. Once the treats are discontinued and thyroid levels are returned to normal in the body, the symptoms should subside.

The recall includes the following:

Castor & Pollux Good Buddy Prime Patties Real Beef Recipe
4 oz. Bag
UPC Code: 780872510806
Best by date range: 5/1/2017-9/1/2019

Castor & Pollux Good Buddy Sausage Cuts Real Beef Recipe
5 oz. Bag
UPC Code: 780872510745
Best by date range: 5/1/2017-9/1/2019

Merrick Backcountry Great Plains Real Beef Jerky
4.5 oz. Bag
UPC Code: 022808786160
Best by date range: 5/1/2017-9/1/2019

Merrick Backcountry Great Plains Real Beef Sausage Cuts
5 oz. Bag
UPC Code: 022808786047
Best by date range: 5/1/2017-9/1/2019

Merrick Backcountry Great Plains Real Steak Patties
4 oz. Bag
UPC Code: 022808786078
Best by date range: 5/1/2017-9/1/2019

Dogs consuming high levels of beef thyroid hormone may exhibit the following symptoms: increased thirst and urination, weight loss, increased heart rate and restlessness.

These symptoms may resolve when consumption decreases.

If a dog consumes high levels for a long period of time, these symptoms may increase in severity and may include vomiting, diarrhea and rapid or labored breathing.

If your pet has consumed the product listed and has exhibited any of these symptoms, please discontinue feeding and contact your veterinarian.

Re: Dog Treat Recall
why are people buying this crap 2 begin with ?
do they really consider it DANGEROUS to give a dog or a cat a piece of bread, a cookie like a graham cracker, slice up a hot dog as treats ?
mygawd.
i really enjoy dogs, 2 right now stretched out by me resting, content etc
and do not get treats- LOL might get like i'm saying, a bit of bread when i need some bread, a cracker whatever.
not as their "diet" ,simply a "good boy moment "
when i see these simple recalls, not the lengthily 1s i just write it on a stick ums thing and slap it around the pet food aisles--the long 1s i post the message in the aisle stating enough AND for people to consult recall notices via the internet.
thanks for the heads up

Re: Dog Treat Recall
Lots of people don't know what to feed their pets anymore. :/ Some rarely if ever read labels on their own food, let alone their pets food. And many just grab whatever is cheapest at the store. :( Merrick is supposedly the best of the cheap dog foods and treats (if there is such a thing as best of). I don't know, haven't read their labels.

On the other hand, this is a 'voluntary recall' which is good for Merrick, at least attempts to show that they are just as concerned as pet owners are.

And good for those who pay attention to recalls. (thanks OP!) Because many stores don't pay as close attention as they should. Ideally, the product is to be pulled asap when a recall goes out. Realistically, often many stores (including walmart :/ ) do not pull the item til a customer points it out. And in my experience, even when I pointed one recall out to a walmart manager, they did NOT pull the item at all.

We really have to educate ourselves and be aware of whats going on out there.

Thanks Esmee. I always try to keep up on recalls. There were so many last winter, more than 10 total I think. I was really starting to think that something very nefarious was going on.

If Walmart won't comply, AC 5561 had a great idea about putting stick ums in the pet food aisles.

I do think something very nefarious is going on with our pet food, many companies are trying to hide what is going into the food, just as with what is happening with our own food. I do believe that many companies get by with barely keeping above the 'just legal' limits. Recalls such as these happen when they oops slip under those limits. :/

And yes true, great idea AC 5561 !! :D

I'm very careful about what my dogs eat and I find it much cheaper to cook for them. I have a slow cooker and am cooking up a batch of dog food in it right now.

This is their favourite recipe lol

2lb liver
1lb turkey mince.
1 large sweet potato
1 squash
Big bunch of spinach.
Cupful long grain rice.

( I put all sorts of veg. in. Just whatever I pick or find reduced at the supermarket.)

I have two dogs and this makes enough to feed them for 5 days. They love it! I mix some kibble in with it too when feeding them.
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

Especially with liver because it is the organ used to detoxify the body, try to use organic grass fed liver. Organ meat is the best and doesn't have the chemicals, antibiotics and hormones given to non organic fed animals. I can't always afford organic meat for my dogs but liver is an exception. Great recipe! Raw bones or egg shells added will provide an important calcium/mineral balance.

I am sorry for the loss of your sweet dog.

One of my dogs almost had the same fate from chewys from china, but thankfully the vet saved him. He was so sick and was at the vet on an IV for days. When he finally came home it took such a long time for him to recover. He was 4 years old at the time. Had he been old, I don't think he would have been able to pull through. After that I have never given any of my dogs rawhide chews again.

I go to the reduced section in the supermarket and by up the meat and fish for them. I do like to try and get the best quality....organic if possible. This afternoon I was in tesco with my son and got 2 whole mackerel for 80p! My dogs love mackerel so will be a nice treat for them.
