Can water build up in my lungs and cause inflammation/swelling if I am outside in the rain for too long and it is raining extremely heavily?

This came from a news article I read a while ago (actually it was quite some time ago, last year I think) where a man was found dead in a forest. The coroner concluded the cause of death was inflammation and swelling of the bronchi and lungs (pneumonia) and that the rain was the primary factor in why his lungs began to produce the mucus that killed him. The coroner didn't say it was from a bacteria or virus, instead the article immediately said something along the lines of being hungry and exposure to constant rain led to mucus forming in both his lungs.

He was in his late 20's (I'm in my early 20's), the report also said that while he was lost it was raining very hard and also constantly, with rainfall beyond half an inch per hour. He was also low on food and it was cold.

I know that when it is raining there's mist (liquid water) suspended in the air. Basically the news article was saying the heavy rain caused thick mist in the air and him breathing it for extended periods irritated his lungs and caused them to produce mucus and swelling (which is called pneumonia). Is it dangerous if for example I go to the store and a really heavy rainstorm breaks out?

Its called dying of exposure.

Too much rain, too much heat, too much cold. Etc.

Yes, it can be very dangerous when raining. Specially if you have any cuts in your skin, which will allow excess water to leak into your body and build up.

By dying of exposure do you mean the mist from the rain building up water in the lungs and this water causing something similar to aspiration pneumonia?

If it's so worrisome to you, OP, then just don't go outside when it's raining, foggy, and/or misting.

Sometimes asthma can do that. If you have certain type of asthma and do not treat an asthma attack over a 12-hour period a very thick mucus will form within the lungs that you cannot cough out. And as it builds you slowly drown.

Sounds unlikely.

I've once been out walking for hours in the most HORRENDOUS downpour of my life, ten times worse than anything else I ever experienced. The rain was so thick I couldn't see a meter through it (no exaggerating!), and my umbrella didn't keep me dry, since the water droplets were so thick in the air I got soaked all over in spite of it. Imagine walking under an umbrella and water runs in streams from the top of your head, not because there's a hole in the umbrella, but because there's that much water in the air!

It was a fucking deluge, I'm telling you! I got as wet and cold as if I had jumped in a lake, and it felt really good getting inside, putting on dry clothes, and having a warm cup of tea. But there were no noticeable side effects apart from that.

One of the greatest terrors is when your body betrays you. Asthma itself is one such way your body betrays you.
