Facts about Freemasonry from a Former Mason

1. Freemasonry is the LARGEST fraternal organization in the World.

2. Members are oath bound to help other member regardless of religious or national separations.


3. Non-Members are called "profane" and dealings with them always come second to a "brother".

4. There are two classes a Freemasonry "regular" lodges and "irregular". The former being recognized and in allegiance with the UGLE (United Grand Lodge of England), the other being lodges which had their charters revoked or are otherwise NOT in allegiance with the UGLE.

5. While regular lodges bar entry to women, irregular lodges may be co-ed, women only, or men only.

6. ALL of the lodges, regular and irregular consider themselves separate from the "profane" unwashed masses.

7. Freemasonry accepts Catholics, but the Catholics church "official" position is that it's members are forbidden to join the craft.

8. The only "secrets" are the methods of identifying one another and the business dealings done outside the lodge (the lodge is only used for initiations and business such as paying the bills to keep the lights on.

9. Freemasonry refers to the three degrees given in Lodge, however there are several appendant bodies which confer additional degrees based on the first three such as The York Rite, Scottish Rite, The Shriners, and more.

10. Freemasonry is not supposed to recruit, having strict entry requirements such as not being disabled, dependent on others, must be a man free born (where are those these days) and of good rapport (that is to say another brother will vouch for you as being good), however I know for a fact in Maryland, they are actively recruiting on the radio.
