Friendly discussion and thought exercise to religious people
Its a thought exercise, an abstraction exercise. If you can, imagine that all you know about your specific religion is a lie. Like all the religions along history that arise, faded and die, think that your religion is also a lie. What would you do?

- If you can't do it and go with the path "It can't be" or "I just can't cope with such an idea", don't bother posting.
- Don't quote the bible, its pointless for the exercise, if you can't do it, you fall under the category above, of people incapable of abstract thinking

There is a simple solution to any religious dilemma: you are either a polytheist or a monotheist. The only monotheism know to humans comes from the biblical God. Choose your side.

Re: Friendly discussion and thought exercise to religious people
OP,

I would give you an honest answer provided that the question is asked in an intellectually open nature. For example, are you willing to answer this same question regarding your own set of "beliefs?" (whatever they may be. Let's call it belief set "x") I am not asking you to reveal WHAT you believe. That is most fair, on my part, IMHO.

If you are unwilling to respond to your own question, this may indicate that you are either convinced that your set of beliefs are the correct set of beliefs and cannot be questioned. Or, you are here to attack others beliefs, whist protecting your assumed superiority.

Notice I said "may" indicate. This leaves room for you to show that you are intellectually honest and fair when asking people about their deeply help beliefs by showing due respect to others.

Are you willing to answer your own question?

Okay so let me get this straight: You would like intellectually honest responses about a person's deeply held and personal spiritual beliefs for a "poll" and for your "research?" Do you posses an awareness of how insulting this is?

And, at this point you are unwilling to answer your own question.

With all due respect, no thank you.

What are your thoughts on this, since you said you wanted a friendly discussion?

Sure thing!

Life is what you made of it. It is full of happy, joy, fulfillment, hopes and dreams. Some of your dreams and expectations will be achieved, some will not. Some of your hopes will fade, happiness don't last forever and joy can become boring. Life can suck sometimes. You'll feel depressed, impotent, frustrated, mad, angry, sad, defeated and many other "down" feelings. To cope with that is what makes you thrive or succumb. Humans are obsessed for answering questions. "I don't know" is not enough for most people. Religion offers easy, packed and ready to consume answers to all your problems. Notice, I said RELIGION. To me, religion is a mechanism to cope with the frustration of being ignorant. So people get attached to religion for easy, ready to go answers for problems. But this creates another problem, reality is not even close to what religion describes, I mean the scientific know reality. We know now much more than we did a thousand years ago, religion became irrelevant. This is way too hard for most people to accept, because they made their lives around religion.

Mr. MaybeTrollingU, I am unwilling to answer. I cite our discussion thus far as to the reasons. I am just one poster here. One of thousands. Surely you can find plenty of "research subjects" for your "poll" and have no need of my seemingly insignificant response to your question.

That said, I typically answer any question posed to me when sincerely asked. However, not for someone's "poll." I personally would not cheapen my beliefs to that level. Others will, and already have.

Just so that we are clear.

Ok. But may I ask what is in your answer that is different from what others who you see as leaning on easy, ready to go answers? Is there anything in your answer that is no less pre-digested, as it were?

You equate reality with the scientifically known reality. But is this reliable? Yes, we know much more than a thousand years ago, but we also know much more than a thousand months ago, or even a thousand weeks ago. So did your reality change along with it? Is it too hard for you to accept that that which you call reality is ever-changing and therefore cannot be reliably said to be reality at all?

In short, what is it that you can reliably know to be true if all else is a lie?

Re: Friendly discussion and thought exercise to religious people
1) Creation has more scientific backing than evolution. This is a fact.
2) If therefore 'Creation' there must be a 'Creator'.
3) If a 'Creator' then there must be a GOD.
4) Of all the world 'religions', Christianity makes the most sense - and yes I have studied others.

So to say that I should imagine that my "religion" (and that term is too broad a brush for me) is a lie would mean I would have to ignore scientific fact and the obvious observation that the world is structured and ordered by a Creator, not just a result of happenstance.

So your opening statement is flawed - you are asking me to become a stupid ignorant retard. Which I cannot be.

There - I've answered your question. You answer mine.

Imagine that GOD is real and you will have to account for your sins on judgement day.
What will you do?

I would stop believing that what I do matters. Religion is the sum of the people who practice it. If they are not who they say they are, there are emotions and drives associated with that that are irreplaceable, and that would be irreparably damaged. Further, to find out that they knew, and are not ashamed would damage my idea of human goodness, which makes actions for the common good not only meaningless, but assisting evil. Why do you care, by the way? Since I took the time to answer.

My life has been one person after another destroying the grounds for one belief in hopes of establishing the next. If this were a hundred years ago, there would be an out of opportunity, but authority has always been risk averse and now the avenues of escape and alternative success are closed. Retreating into a schizo fantasy is apparently evil and selfish, so dying inside as a prelude to dying outside is a way for the meaningless punishment not to set me up again. It is true that for whatever reason, beliefs are constantly changing and being replaced by different beliefs. But is it true that all avenues are closed? If you wish to not be set up to be hurt or lied to, would it not make sense to find a secure starting point, or ground of being, that is immune from shifting belief?

Let's suppose all religions, including atheism, are indeed untrue. Does it then really follow that there is no existence? Even if all belief systems are false, does this mean that you, yourself, no longer exist? Even if everything you believed about yourself turned out to be false, would it change the fact that you exist?

I would stop believing that what I do matters. Religion is the sum of the people who practice it. If they are not who they say they are, there are emotions and drives associated with that that are irreplaceable, and that would be irreparably damaged. Further, to find out that they knew, and are not ashamed would damage my idea of human goodness, which makes actions for the common good not only meaningless, but assisting evil. Why do you care, by the way? Since I took the time to answer.

I care because you saidany you would stop believing in anyone or anything. That's a dangerous path to tread, so I thought it might be helpful to establish something you could believe in without question.

Believing in people who hurt you and lie to you means believing you deserve it. What's the point in that?

It is true that for whatever reason, beliefs are constantly changing and being replaced by different beliefs. But is it true that all avenues are closed? If you wish to not be set up to be hurt or lied to, would it not make sense to find a secure starting point, or ground of being, that is immune from shifting belief?

That would be 'no belief.' I stopped listening to music quite a while ago, which should clue you in to where I'm at now, believe me or not. There was a mad scramble for meaning, and then for sense, and now for nothingness. If answers are so dangerous to give, it's better to let people you claim to care about keep believing, is it not?
