Re: Remember when people were NICE
It's like many have lost "love". Love for our mates, love for our children, love for our very humanity.

There is little romance in our songs, in our tv shows or our music.

There was actually magic in dating and falling in love at one time. Now sex is simply expected on any first date. So much has been lost.

Many have lost their very "Joie de vivre" and seem to to have sunk to the low-vibe state of Acedia.

Acedia - look it up.

Wow that pretty much nails It!

Sad but I've been seeing this decline for quite a while.
I remember when the internet wasn't so censored and Googlefied in the late 1990s and early 2000s and message boards and the free exchange of ideas were actually a thing. I had done a search of "Are people getting colder and meaner. " And there were people who were starting to notice and discussing it back then.

Try doing that search today?

All you end up getting are site suggestions and political crap! Which is another thing. Never in my life have I seen politics infect literally EVERY fiber of society like a CANCER like it does today. From entertainment to education to freaking advertisements from aspirin to soup!

I think people are at a point where they're drained of emotion and humanity with it all.
And now you have

yeah....and you didn't have to lock your car doors....or house doors, and didn't need car alarms....and didn't NEED to carry a gun just to go to Walmart!! But, but, the dumb *&^^&'s say it hasn't changed....now THAT'S STUPIDITY.

Still don't have to where I live.

I dropped my purse in a shopping mall some months back. Drove off, discovered it missing at the next shop I went to, drove back to the shopping centre (mall) and someone had handed it in. I had over €300 in cash - not a cent missing.

Sorry Ms. Tess, I chalk that up to purely luck. Try it 20 times at 20 different locations.

No it's the people here. Western Ireland, small country communities, churchgoing, hardly any immigration. It's as if time stood still. Just how I like it.

Go to You Tube, type in any city you care to mention.

50's 60's 70's 80's and look at what you see.. The footage looks amazing and idylic.

Fuck that shit, there were rapes and murders all the same. Democrats were better than Republicans and prisoners swept the streets. Raising a barn and lowering taxes were normal.

Well, it looks like there was a copyright takedown of the video..

Kinda ironic considering this is about how people used to be nice, i guess even the guy filming has changed into an asshole.

Oh well, times are changing. people only care about themselves and money.

It's extra weird to me because I worked graveyard in a 7-11 in 1987.

Better Times.

Though things had already started to take a turn for the worse.

I was held up at gunpoint by crackheads, led into the back room. I really thought that might be it the way he was shaking and freaking out yelling "don't look at me".

they smoking cigs inside the shop!!!
drama
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76676110

You used to be able to smoke anywhere, even in elevators, though it was polite to ask the people stuck in the elevator with you if they minded if you smoked.

At movie theaters and on airplanes, they had ashtrays built into the armrests of the seats.

At high schools, they had smoking lounges, so the kids didn't have to smoke outside in bad weather.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76395149

We had to sign out to "Downtown" to have a smoke. It took just long enough to walk down the hill and back up again to have a cigaret.

You could smoke in the doctor's office or in the hospital. I had to have an operation on my arm, and whan I woke up I really wanted a cigaret, but I couldn't bend that arm, and the other one had an IV in it. The nice lady in the next bed put the cigaret in my mouth and lit it, then sat next to me holding it to my mouth so I could puff on it. Can you imaging that happening now?

But I can't remember anybody ever smoking in church. LOL
 Quoting: Lily o' the Valley

lol. No, no smoking in church, my pastor told us kids not to do it, he was ahead of his times

Re: Remember when people were NICE
Planes fly low over my house almost everyday now.

Not long ago my own cousin whom I grew up playing with called me and told me that they had thought about hiring someone to kill me. Because I'm bad? No. Because her daughter misunderstood what I tried to say to her husband on a visit. That was worth my life.

Everybody in my family back stabs where they used to stand together. Everybody's afraid of everyone else. I thought that I had woke up one day in the world that had just gone crazy, but the truth is? We are at War. We've been turned against one another and we've all gone crazy. You will not be able to, for a long time, have a conversation with someone close to you without wondering what they're really thinking.

For a long time I just wanted to get through it. Get it over with. But now? I realize that we are at War. It's a psychological war that we've been primed for, for decades. And now it's here.

I expect to find myself banned from this site in the morning. Because you can't say truth anymore. Not anywhere. They're going to delete all the real people that's left.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75071190

Thats exactly it. We are all too segregated now for a multitude of reasons. Paranoia and fear widely flows through society. We've been turned against family friends and neighbours. Long gone is the respectful caring attitude towards each other. People are all about themselves. Nothing else matters except whats going on in their own little bubble of a world.
 Quoting: **Aurora**

Absolutely wrong...we are too INTEGRATED , by force, for us to be happy! All these happy anecdotes listed here are from a time with a LOT LESS race mixing, and being forced to live among, interact with, and tolerate different races. Say what you will.....this is fact.

Even in highly integrated, events, schools, malls, workplaces, etc, etc, etc....whites hang with whites, and blacks hang with blacks. That is natural behaviour and natural tendency.....the sooner everyone understands this root cause of societal decline, widespread unhappiness, and growing negro fatigue; the sooner we fix it.

People have never been nice.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76373530

I started out life in the 60s in the upmarket section of a big city.

Most of the residents were from old upper class families. They were exquisitely well-mannered and honorable, kind people. No one ventured much past this neighborhood's invisible borders.

It was only when I got older and discovered other neighborhoods and cities, I realized that not everywhere was so civilized.

Now I live in a rural village, far away from the madding crowd and cities, just about forgotten by almost everyone. Most folks are very friendly, decent folks and always have time to stop for real conversations.

So yea, it's probably true that there have always been nice people and those of the nasty variety.

I'd say that villages and small towns are where you find courteous, decent folks.

Cities fundamentally spell death to civilization.
Because they weren't built for people, they were built for commerce and industry only.

Re: Remember when people were NICE
Smoking on planes with real food, and getting paid to travel was about as good as it ever got.
There was a period in 80s-90s where you could not smoke on Amtrak coach, but you could in your private sleeper.

I am getting older and I do miss the time when people seemed to be more responsible and connected to and for each other.

This age favors anonymity at the expense of family and community.

Disposable existence, getting lost rather than accept responsibility....

People were nicer because more people overall behaved responsibly.

That built community and respect for all.

Now we have thug life.

Your right and as I remember not that many people were dying from what they were doing. Cancer in the 1950s was rare, even into the 1960s. Make you ponder a bit on this on, people did not die from heart disease and margarine was not real butter, they used real butter.
People ate what ones who run their mouths today saying it will kill you, well a lot of people are dying today and they are not eating it, go figure.
 Quoting: hankie

Do you also remember hundreds of nuke tests, or using asbestos in everything, in the 50s and 60s?

Of course cancer was rare. It takes time for these things to start killing you (20-30 years).

Re: Remember when people were NICE
For a society that has supposed to have evolved over time - we really do constantly live in fear of so many things. I know society has always had things to be fearful of but its so battered into us now to fear this and fear that, fear each other, be fearful of what you say in case of offending any snowflakes. I liked the video because the people were so genuinely relaxed and carefree and able laugh and joke with each other without having to walk on egg shells.

People back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s were probably so much healthier than us and its probably because they were so laid back and happier.
