After death, you’re aware that you’ve died, say scientists
Time of death is considered when a person has gone into cardiac arrest. This is the cessation of the electrical impulse that drive the heartbeat. As a result, the heart locks up. The moment the heart stops is considered time of death. But does death overtake our mind immediately afterward or does it slowly creep in?

Some scientists have studied near death experiences (NDEs) to try to gain insights into how death overcomes the brain. What they’ve found is remarkable, a surge of electricity enters the brain moments before brain death. One 2013 study out of the University of Michigan, which examined electrical signals inside the heads of rats, found they entered a hyper-alert state just before death.

Being a nurse, I've witnessed a few of them. Three people that I know that were heaven bound, it happened immediately and fast. They were going up at incredible speeds. One lady who we had been working on, for a while in a code, was actually up there with Jesus and was very upset that we brought her back.
On the other hand, those that are going to hell usually take a longer time to realize they are dead and go on to there final resting place. They also described it as death creeping in and did not move as fast as those going to heaven. I only have personal experience with two of these.

I would hope so. How shitty would that be to not realize that's what happened?!?

I'm actually a few chapters into a Raymond Moody book on the subject right now.

I actually took a college class called "death and dying" back in the 80's. It spurred me on the decades of study on the subject. I mean what could be more important? right?

We all have to do it.

We started with Paul Tillich, quite a Christian mystic like guy. And other works like "Journeys out of the Body" by Robert Monroe.

The time that it took to have the afterlife experience was one.
The hell-bound described darkness slowly creeping in, and a feeling of fear and confusion about what was going on.

The heaven-bound knew exactly where they were going and experienced overwhelming joy and happiness while going up.

One of those heaven-bound was my father. He died in the middle of the night and luckily mom started pounding on his chest. He said that he was going up very fast and angels were with him. He was praising God and was very happy. The next thing he knew, he was looking down at the roof of the house, he wanted to go back up and the angel told him that it is not yet his time because he has family that needs him. Suddenly, he was back in his body.

I had a near death experience, in which I went upwards to a pearly gate (not kidding) and there were two men waiting for me, my Dad was one.
I felt enormous love, the presence of Jesus, and it was like all I had ever been longing and searching for, and even more than I could ever have imagined. I did not want to come back, but my sister was slapping me.
Wasn't my time yet. I had to think of my children in the car on the way to the hospital, to stop myself from slipping back in there.

Re: After death, you’re aware that you’ve died, say scientists
What is this "surge of electricity" that the researches measured? It's some form of energy that is measurable. The nature of that electricity is unknown. Could be a physical reaction or something to do with the spirit, which is a form of energy.

So, it's either purely physical activity or maybe the spirit preparing to exit the body. Maybe when the spirit/soul leaves the body, it is measurable in the brain where the 'essence' of the person is located. Who knows.

It has been suggested that the intellect is not simply electrical activity. That there is more to the "essence" of thoughts.

I've felt what I believe is the closest thing to God, in a dream. All I remember is feeling this overwhelming sense of unworthiness, and as I bowed my face into the carved stone I was standing on, I felt this immense warmth come upon me. I didn't dare look up, but where my vision was pressed, it shone like gold. A humbling experience, that I am sure wont be the last.

None of their studies with DMT duplicated the actual experiences of NDE's. The patients were aware they were in a disjointed drugged state. NDE's are super consciousness, involving things such as blind at birth individuals seeing and describing the room and colors, reporting events happening in other rooms, and a shoe on the roof of the hospital, and like my son, HEALED instantly on return.

So NO, THIS ISN'T A DRUG TRIP HONEY. You're going to survive death and what you do in this life matters. Straighten out your life.

Ah yes, that's the first book we got in our death and dying class.

I took the class on a lark, because I needed the credit and it was available at the right time. It ended up changing the course of my life.

For me eventually it led to Advaita Vedanta, and the books of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. Ultimately his teachings of realization are about death and dying too.

Me too. I even experienced a lot of what he described, rotes I think he called them? Sound patterns repeated almost like an address or a phone number that take you to a locale. In a ball amongst a seemingly infinite sea of balls. Opening the ball if I did not like it or got bad vibes I could close it immediately before engaging too far.

Even though my experience was mostly positive, it all got a little too heavy for me at the time, and it abruptly stopped.

Was this transference from reading his book? Or is there some underlying reality to it?

"Far Journeys" is far out. For sure :)

Heart stopping is NOT the moment of death. It can often be re-activated by a refibrillator if applied soon enough. It is NOT a reliable sign of death, for the brain can continue undamaged for 10-20 seconds (the figure varies) when blood stops circulating.

The REAL moment of irreversible death is nothing that medicine can do anything about. It is the snapping of a tube of bio-energy that connects the physical body to the etheric body. When this happens, the etheric body starts gradually to disintegrate and consciousness can never be re-activated in the brain. Instead, it transfers (consciously or unconsciously) to the next of the five vehicles of consciousness - the astral body (linga sarira in Sanskrit).
