Keeping Dogs and Cats safe and calm during the 4th of July fireworks
Sometimes our pets panic during fireworks. I'm looking for some good ideas to help our pets get through this with as little stress as possible.

I have two Boston Terriers. One does not seem to be bothered much by fireworks. I give him a new toy and a blanket to comfort him and he's fine. But... my other dog goes completely bonkers- running to the windows, barking and panting.

This year, I'm prepared. I bought her a thundershirt and I really hope this helps. I've heard that they work well for most dogs. I let her wear it a few times a day to get used to it. I'll let you know if it was a success.

Anyway, I started a list with some suggestions and I'm hoping that anyone who has some ideas will add them.

And let's not forget about cats. Anyone have suggestions for keeping cats calm and safe as well?

Here's my list:

1. Ask your neighbors if they are planning anything so that you can prepare.

2. Be sure that your pets are kept securely inside the house.

3. Make sure you shut all windows in your home and don’t forget to draw the curtains too. This will block out flashes of light and help sound proof a bit.

4. If you have a crate, it might be a good time to use it.

5. Have some special treats ready and a new toy too. Maybe a nice comfy blanket to curl up on. It's great if someone can be with the pets to comfort them.

6. Play some calming music or turn on the tv.

7. If your dog barks, don't yell at him. He's barking because he's scared or trying to protect you. Talk to him in a calm voice.

8. Be sure that your dog and/or cat has plenty of cool fresh water.

If you have any helpful suggestions, please post them.

Great thread OP. Animal lover here, and anything posted to help animals is 5 stars in my book.

Our little doxie mix is very scared of loud noises, and does not like fireworks at ALL. The only thing he likes less is thunder. In the past, we have crated him for the 4th, because he was just hysterical. We'd put him in there, and cover it with a blanket until they stopped . The last few years, he's gotten a little better, so we leave him out, and just allow him to stay close to us. They say it's best to not coddle our comfort them too much, because that communicates that something is wrong. Better is just to relax, pet them, and act as if nothing is wrong. I think that's what has helped our little guy to tolerate it better then he used to.

Good luck with your pooches!

Re: Keeping Dogs and Cats safe and calm during the 4th of July fireworks
OP, on the night of July 2nd, 2016 my mom and I nearly died while driving to my sisters' house for a weekend visit. A bunch of people were exploding their fireworks that night. On US69N in between my town and Celeste, TX there was one incoming car Southbound and one car somewhat distantly ahead of us. I was really thinking about getting my fountain drink from the cupholder as I was really thirsty still when the car in front of us swerved onto the shoulder of the road. I thought they were just answering a phone call really.

It was the headlights of the rapidly incoming car in their lane that I faintly saw the shape of what looked like two giant fat black guys running hard down US69N. Within the next literal second I got a better look and realized they were two large horses!! For the first time in some years I swerved hard and slammed on the brakes. We came less than a foot of the horses on my side of the car. I even felt their hooves hit the pavement as well. That's how close we came to hitting two full grown horses going 70 mph. We had the car fully loaded with food and drink going to my sisters' house. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't been paying so much attention we would of hit the horses head-on killing them and my mother and myself instantly, or at least killing myself as I was driving and my mom in the back seat.

Since that night it's been a new family legend. I should mention too that when we went back home just as we got to the north side of town I had to swerve to miss a large white dog on my lane. It was dark that night too. We spun out and thankfully no incoming traffic at that time. The dog was nowhere to be found too. My mom told me literally five seconds prior to the spin-out she thought, "Ahh... at least we're back in town. Nothing's going to go wrong now.". It's been a great family joke as far as I'm concerned.

Rescue Remedy or Feverfew for a pre-packaged calming agent. If you have the skills to get them down the gullet Skullcap (1 to 2 mg per pound), Valerian (4mg per pound) Catnip (No set dosages) and/or Kava Kava (0.5 mg/pound) capsules will work too.

I thought about using CBD oil. If the Thundershirt doesn't work, I may try it in the future. I would love to hear from anyone who has used it for their pets. Good or bad results.

Thank you!

And thank you for the great advice! I agree, you have to act like it's no big deal, but my female doesn't get it. She thinks it is a huge deal. Last year I used a crate but she was panting so hard that I ended up taking her out. This year I'm trying out a Thundershirt.

It's funny how my male couldn't care less. I know he can hear. Just drop a piece of food on the floor when he's not looking.

I play this YouTube video on repeat at dusk through my computer or tv on the 4th as the people out there set off their silly fireworks and look around like the neighbors want to be like them or something. What a waste of money. The white noise along with a box fan etc keeps my dogs calm and relaxed until the nonsense is over for another year...

nice thread peeve

ofc everyone should take due diligence to make their pets comfortable

but u realize these 'safety crusader martyr' threads can be taken too far as many others have

this tread sounds to me as if it's a half inch from banning professional firework displays

as i write this i just remembered last week i learned many types of fireworks (after decades of bans) are now legal for "backyard" type use... which i'm not in favor of. (anything for the almighty dollar)

just sayin

Don't be the source of the trauma.

Have a night in with your pets. Cuddle and watch a wildlife movie.

It's really simple.

No, I'm not for banning fireworks, but I do think that they should be left to the professionals. In my state fireworks are illegal without a permit issued from the Fire Dept. but very few pay attention to that so we end up with an unreasonable amount of fireworks. The animals freak out. I used to enjoy fireworks until people started going crazy with them and it seems to go on for days before and after the 4th and late into the night too.

Yes, I agree that the backyard fireworks are the problem.

I don't mind them on the forth of July, but I do mind them the rest of the year.

I live in Redneksville, and they light them just about every night.

In August, it's like Wooo Hooo, it's the 5th of August!!! Let light fireworks!!!!

Most of them don't even know what July 4th is all about.

I have an interior coat closet that I've lined with old comforters. I put a kennel in there padded on all sides with pillows, leaving an opening for our dog to get in an out. It works pretty well with her. She can still hear the noise , but not as loud.
I leave it that way incase a thunderstorm comes our way.
