Although the IDF is not preparing for a ground operation inside the Gaza Strip at the moment, Ynet learned Thursday that the IDF returned its artillery batteries to the Gaza vicinity area after removing them from there last December following the incident in which 18 Palestinian civilians were killed in Beit Hanoun.

Earlier Thursday, IDF forces sent several tanks into the northern Gaza Strip near the town of Beit Lahiya. The tanks are several hundred meters inside the security fence, providing the IDF an additional means to battle Qassam rocket fire in the area.

This is the first time that IDF tanks have entered Gaza since the ceasefire took effect six months ago.

Soldiers from the 402 regiment arrived in an area near the Strip and set up a number of batteries. They began setting up tents southeast of the Gaza Strip. Thousands of shells have been fired from the area in the past toward launching sites in the Strip.

Over the months in which the batteries were in the area, Palestinians claimed that the shells caused casualties among civilians. In one of the incidents, which took place on November 2006, civilians were killed in Beit Hanoun due to a technical malfunction.

Madrid bomb suspects threaten to starve to death

Suspects on trial for deadly train bomb attacks in Madrid are prepared to starve themselves to death in protest at charges they say are a sham, lawyers forthe accused said in a letter to the court on Thursday.

Nine suspects went on hunger strike on Wednesday, joining four already refusing food. The 29 accused are standing trial over Islamist bomb attacks on Madrid trains which killed 191 people in 2004.

The United States said on Thursday that Israel had the right to defend itself against rocket attacks from the Palestinian terror group Hamas and praised the Jewish state for "great restraint" in recent days.

Israeli air strikes on Thursday destroyed a Hamas security headquarters and a car carrying one of the group's top commanders. Israel had threatened a "severe" response to cross-border rocket attacks that have persisted despite a troop and settler pullout from Gaza in 2005.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack urged restraint on all sides but said Israel had the right to respond to rocket attacks from Hamas.

"Israel has the right to defend itself and it has exercised great restraint in the face of these rocket attacks," McCormack told reporters.

Mubarak: Hamas Will Never Make Peace

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has admitted what we have known for a long time, but which still seems to elude policymakers in Europe and Washington: Hamas will never make peace with Israel.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak expressed great concern over the increasing strength of Hamas in talks with senior diplomatic officials on Wednesday, declaring that the organization will never sign a peace agreement with Israel, Haaretz has learned.

He said that the Egyptian government is at a loss regarding the future of the Gaza Strip. However, he also proclaimed that Egypt is making great efforts to end the Hamas government and support Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

"With Hamas no way," he reportedly said.

Mubarak painted a dark picture of the situation with Hamas and said there was no chance for peace with the organization. "Hamas will never sign a peace agreement with Israel if it stays in power," the Egyptian president said.

Mubarak also said that Egypt did not accept Hamas in power, especially in light of its growing ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, which leads the opposition in Egypt. Mubarak sees the Brotherhood, which gained considerable power in Egypt's last parliamentary elections, as a threat to secular power.

It appears that Mubarak is giving Israel the green light to take action against Hamas. Apparently Mubarak sees Hamas as a threat no less than Israel does. What better than to have someone else do your dirty work for you?

Rocket attacks continue Thursday evening. Two rockets fired at southern Ashkelon, one lands near strategic facility. Two rockets fired at Sderot; no injuries reported but fire breaks out in two buildings. At least 12 rockets fired at southern Israel since Thursday morning

Four Qassam rockets landed Thursday evening in Sderot and in southern Ashkelon, near a staretgic facility. There were no reports of injuries, but one of the rockets hit a factory in Sderot and caused a fire to break out. Fire fighters reported that two buildings were damaged.

At least 12 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip since Thursday morning.

IDF confirms attack on Rafah

Retaliation Threat As Israel Bombs Gaza

Israel's air force has destroyed a Hamas security headquarters in Gaza City, reportedly killing at least three people and wounding scores more.

The planes struck at the heart of the city, where rival factions have been battling for the past six days in violence that threatens to turn into all-out civil war.

Gaza residents and Hamas radio identified the target as a building used by the Islamist group's Executive Force.

This group is challenging secular rivals Fatah for security control of the territory.

More than 40 Palestinians have been killed in fighting between the two factions in the past week.

The ministers described Islamophobia as a deliberate defamation of Islam and discrimination and intolerance against Muslims.
They accused Western media of misrepresenting Islam and Muslims worldwide, according to a report in Arab News.

“The linkage of terrorists and extremists with Islam in a generalized manner is unacceptable," the ministers said.

"The increasingly negative political and media discourse targeting Muslims and Islam in the United States and Europe has made things all the more difficult," the foreign ministers said, according to the report.

“This campaign of calumny against Muslims resulted in the publication of the blasphemous cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a Danish newspaper and the issuance of the inflammatory statement by Pope Benedict XVI,” the ministers said.

The ministers said the Islamophobic terror threat predates this decade, but worsened on Sept. 11, 2001.

“Islamophobia became a source of concern, especially after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, but the phenomenon was already there in Western societies in one form or the other," they said.

“It gained further momentum after the Madrid and London bombings. The killing of Dutch film director Theo van Gogh in 2004 was used in a wicked manner by certain quarters to stir up a frenzy against Muslims."

Hamas suicide threat after Israeli air strike

Hamas threatened to restart suicide bombing attacks against Israel today, after the Jewish state launched three seperate air raids against the Islamists in retaliation for two days of rocket attacks against its civilians.

The Israeli strikes, which reportedly killed three people and wounded around 80 others, came as an attempt at a ceasefire between warring Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip fell apart, leading to further killings by Hamas and Fatah-affiliated gunmen around the wartorn area.

With violence between the Islamist and secular movements continuing - and with Israel massing tanks at Gaza's northern border in an apparent show of strength in the face of further Hamas rocket attacks - the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, of Fatah, cancelled a planned meeting with the Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya which had been planned to try to stop the crisis.
