It's been a while since I've seen it but I agree with what you are saying.
He's living the same day (life) over and over until he passes the test. Once he understands how it works he realizes he has unlimited time to perfect himself. He masters various skills to impress the girl (with ego) but he doesn't win her over until he masters unconditional love.
