As someone else said, why not keep as part of the tourist attraction?? My husband said it would cost a billion dollars for them to move them and they're outdated. ![]() Last Edited by Evangelina on 07/13/2018 05:00 PM You say there is no God.. but I KNOW there is, experience will "Trump" theory every time ~ Evangelina It is not the greatness of my faith that moves mountains but my faith in the Greatness of God TRUTH has Nothing to do with the Number of People Who are Convinced of it. Oh and by the way, many of those historic satellites are still up there even if they're now non-operational. You can still track them and see them with a telescope. They're real. ![]() |

Dr. Deplorable Astromut![]() Senior Forum Moderator 07/13/2018 06:21 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Any thoughts on NASA Astronaut Don Pettit on why he said the technology was lost going back to the moon? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76501352 Lost, no, destroyed, just like those two towers. We tore down the infrastructure that was used to launch men to the moon and replaced it with the space shuttle. That is exactly what he was talking about. "In 2004 the latest effort to “save the LUT” took place as NASA prepared to scrap its remains, which had been found by the Environmental Protection Agency to be leeching heavy metals and toxic substances from its orange gantry paint into the soil at the open-air storage site and into the local water table. NASA decided to spend $2 million to decontaminate and dispose of the pieces, but again preservationists stepped forward to prevent it. Burton Summerfield, chief of the safety, health, and environmental division at KSC, sounded the position of most in NASA when he talked sympathetically of these efforts. “A lot of people have tried over the years to save the tower, but unfortunately no one has come up with the financial wherewithal to do it. For us right now, this is an environmental issue rather than a historic preservation issue,” he commented. A hastily organized Space Restoration Society, led by enthusiastic but cash-poor advocates, appealed to save the LUT as something akin “to the piers from which Christopher Columbus set sail from in Palos de la Frontera, Spain with the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.” Of course, those were not preserved either. This preservation effort failed as well. On February 12, 2004, NASA began disposal work on the LUT and within a few months it was gone." [link to launiusr.wordpress.com (secure)] And of course long before the final pieces were destroyed we had already stopped building Saturn V's and the other spacecraft equipment. No spacecraft, no spaceflights. We've now destroyed the shuttle technology too; the shuttles sitting in museums are hollowed out museum pieces, not operational spacecraft. Their engines have been removed, pluming which formerly carried toxic fuel gutted, etc. We don't currently have the technology to even launch Americans into orbit from American soil right now. Hopefully that's changing soon. ![]() |

I'd be happier knowing they had something to replace these old towers, but we've become bored with spaceflight in the last years... |
