Spider mites, worms, caterpillars, snails and fungus are a constant battle. Not much luck with neem oil so got to get something stronger and none of my chems are labelled for vegetables. Bt aka thuricide is working good so cats are gone. My next step is to get a few yards of mushroom compost to till into my sand that is lacking in organic matter. |

Quoting: bugkiller Love the Spinosad for leaf chewers and it's gone in 24 hours, Pyrethrin for nuking areas near the veggies as a barrier. Both veggie safe. This is the way the world ends. Quoting: Fred Garvin I have fed more cridders trying to garden Then the weather..... Just how did they do it just a few hundred yeas ago we fed ourselves and preserved our own food? It is amazing how they survived, I would be really struggling if I was dependent on my garden for food. |

It's all over the property, and some of it is 7 feet tall. I have harvested some and made marsh mallows with the root, and tea from the leaves. It turns out, the leaves are very good for your stomach, but are also a very powerful diuretic. If anyone is in western Nebraska or eastern Wyoming, and you want some I can hook you up. I probably will not harvest a lot of root, but I'll have plenty of leaves. I'm making a salve from the leaves mixed with plantain leaves. Both are good wound healers, and will stop itching. That just sounds like the greatest bug bite treatment ever. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe |

That's ok. Dont much care for sweet potatoes anyways... but... If I catch em in there I'll give em a dose of lead from my 12 guage. At the range I'm shooting at it will just scare em and not hurt em. But let them know they Aint supposed to be there. We didn't plant any beets this year but a neighbor did and gave us enough to can 9 quarts. A 5 gallon bucket full. Nothing like fresh beets. Already have 50 quarts of white half runners canned. 30 quarts if 6 week beans Gonna do 50 quarts if greasy grit beans. 30 quarts of kraut. Had a ton of okra... just gave away half a bushel to some repairmen. Decided not to do pickles this year. No canning tomatoes this year either. We have a surplus. We rely heavily on raising and canning our own food here. As little as we can buy from the store is our policy. _______________________ |

You can learn/research most everything on video tubes. And commit this to memory: Sevin liquid or dust. I have great results with Sevin concentrated liquid. Bifen IT (keep back from the garden) kills most everything else, and is also GREAT for mosquitos. Quoting: Superkicker . ... WOW! ... wouldn't want you to "help" me ... why should I go to those who ridicule ... . Sevin kills everything, anyway. It's a last resort for huge infestations. |

My few squash plants were terrorized by a landscaper who was moving a pump. So, they withered. I'm creating some olive oil cubes in the freezer with various things. I've made the mushroom cubes, and want some garlic cubes. |

I've made the mushroom cubes, and want some garlic cubes. Cubes? how do you make those? I purchased plastic ice cube trays, place everything in it, and add the olive oil that works best. Then freeze. Then pop them out and into a large zippy bag. Keeps them frozen for sauteeing into various dishes. Cooking for 1, I still buy bulk but freeze things to cut waste. |

The stance and stare of a wolf you find yourself alone with will tell you that he is prepared to treat you as you would treat him. Whether that comforts or frightens you, he has told you all you need know about both. |
