Help My Cat Is Sick
I'm looking for any kind theories on what might be wrong with him.

I have taken him to the vet twice in the last week. The vet says he isn't running a fever, teeth look good, blood tests are normal, and his x-ray looked ok. The vet wasn't sure what one spot on the x-ray might be. She said possibly stools. He is a big cat though and her feeling around with her hands she couldn't feel anything odd.

I have cleaned his food & water bowl and his litter box. He is drinking ok and he seems interested in food but everytime he eats he throws up. He even throws up when he hasn't eaten.

I did catch him eating on my coneflower but he has done that in the past. As far as Google it doesn't seem to be a poisonous plant but now I have it put up.

Next is an ultrasound for him. However i'm really low on money and not sure how much further I can go. I really don't want to put him down because he was fine a couple weeks ago.

It may be irritation in the stomach lining...that's what happened to my dog..he got bloated and was sick a lot due to the stomach irritation... the vet might pick this up with a scan, or maybe they need the camera down there to check...

A bezoar (BE-zor) is a solid mass of indigestible material that accumulates in your digestive tract, sometimes causing a blockage. Bezoars usually form in the stomach, sometimes in the small intestine or, rarely, the large intestine.

I googled bezoar and it said it's a hairball but the vet didn't see anything on the x-ray except the one spot and she said it looked like stools but wasn't 100 percent and the ultrasound is the next step.

Honestly i'm struggling with money right now and I need to see if it's something simple. My husband hasn't worked in almost 3 weeks because he is sick and I have already spent $200 for my kitty and it's another $150 just for the ultrasound.

It's a wonder they haven't already went down that route... I don't know how much it costs where you are but here in the UK, the scan was around £100 and the camera was around £200 ish because it was the procedure that was involved...
This is the only way they picked his stomach irritation up though, so it might be worth an ask...it is very pricey though...

I hope your cat gets the right diagnosis and is well again soon hf

I'm sorry to hear that you and your cat are going through this.

My cat recently went through something and I do think he was poisoning himself. I got all the plants out of his reach, and stopped him from going in attic, cellar, garage where poisonous stuff tends to congregate.

Indoor cats especially long for plants. I think it is probably nice to buy a cat-grass plant. I see them at the grocery store. Or start one of your own with seeds.

Egg yolks seem to perk up my cats over the long term.

Also, raw ground beef. If a cat is very ill, prob not a time to try raw meat. Start it when the cat is well.

The breeder says she would sometimes give whole milk yogurt to cats when they were "off" in the digestion.

Thanks everyone hf. Thankfully the vet I use is already low cost. I don't think it's my cats food. I usually buy a big bag and it lasts him for a while. I've probably had the bag for a month now and no problems when I first bought the bag.

I would try to feed him something else but my cat is so picky he won't eat anything. He likes his dry food and that's it. He doesn't like fish or beef...he doesn't even really care for tuna. He just licks the juice.

Pet food goes rancid and just because it didn’t bother him at first doesn’t mean it’s not having a cumulative effect and causing illness. Pet foods are garbage swept up from the food manufacturing process and cooked at super high heat to denature it. Seriously cook him up a whole chicken in water and debone it. Or give him a can of sardines in water. Or brown up a little ground beef and put an egg yolk on top.

People! Stop poisoning your pets with that garbage from a bag!!!! It’s rancid and full of plastic and styrofoam and poisons from denaturing meat and road kill and often euthanized pets and other animals and phenobarbital DOES NOT break down in high heat!!!

He needs something like wheat grass or catnip....fresh.

If you don't have those available and you have a chemical free yard... try a variety of grasses... hand picked and lay them out for him to choose....

I am going to buy fresh cat food but like I said in another post my cat will eat nothing other than his dry cat food. He doesn't like beef, chicken, fish, milk, etc. He will eat a little tuna and that's about it. Usually he will just lick up the juice.

He is almost 11 and he has only had two types of food his whole life. One was a aldi brand and now he eats friskies.

I have gave him a little grass but he didn't touch it. Also to the other poster thank you for the prayers.

This will only treat his nausea, not the underlying cause of course. But, blow some pot smoke in the cats face. It will help with his appetite & help him keep the food down a bit better. Years ago, my aunt & uncle would buy weed when their cats were sick. In the event it didn't help they would then take them to the doc.

Try giving him a little bit of olive oil in his food.

Some Vets have payment plans and will work with you on making payments, he does not seem to be that ill to be put down..

Their is a way..just work with your vet and look on google for tummy remedies for cat ailments

All the best to you and Kitty!

Re: Help My Cat Is Sick
I'm sorry to hear this, I love kitties :(

How is his activity level? Does he seem tired, lethargic, depressed in addition to the vomiting and lessened food intake?

Has your vet done a full blood workup to check for any nutrient imbalances?

Did your vet check his xray for any damage to the pancreas?

(I am thinking possible pancreatitis, might be something to ask about). Ask for blood workup to check for pancreatic and liver enzymes and check insulin levels.

One of my cats had a couple bouts of gastritis a few years ago - he couldn't keep anything down at all. But I could also visibly tell something was wrong with him because in addition to the vomiting, he was laying around all depressed and sad-looking off by himself (and he is usually down here in the mix with us all the time). So I'm curious if you cat is also just kind of depressed, lethargic, or hanging out alone when he is normally hanging out with you? These are all clues. During this time, I could also see his third eyelid coming up and covering part of his lower eye - this is also a big indicator they feel unwell.

My cat overcame his gastritis but he did have to stay in the hospital for a couple days each time. They gave him fluids and other meds (can't remember them all now) but I do specifically remember giving him generic Pepcid (famotidine) for about a week after getting him home. I would give him a half tablet of Pepcid morning and night, and it really helped to settle his guts. Ask your vet if they think it would be ok to try Pepcid for your cat - it might help a lot for inflammation and reducing stomach acid.

Also check his kidney function - cats with chronic kidney disease are more likely to have elevated acid levels making them more prone to vomiting. A daily dose of a 1/4 of a 10 mg tablet of Pepcid AC (or generic, famotidine) can control this. Some cats feel nauseous without vomiting, which causes a decrease in appetite.

Re: Help My Cat Is Sick
Is he a house cat?

Do you have deer in your yard?

Might be a bot fly.

Or pancreatitis.

My dog vomited on Friday morning several times before finally ending the show with a prodigious amount of bloody vomit. It was scary but I remembered when my son had a stomach flu he did the same thing. Doc said it was just due to his excessive vomiting. I took her to the vet. Her temperature was normal and they did take some blood tests. I went for the $71 dollar package before I committed to the $300 package. Her numbers were normal except for the kidneys which the vet said was caused by dehydration.

They wanted to keep her there for 2-4 days at $300 a day giving her IV hydration. So I said okay.

Then I got a phone call saying they cannot get the IV to work because she was dehydrated. So I went back to the vets office and gave her 7ml doses of water orally. She improved, I took her home, they were upset but I know my dog better than they do — she is a nervous little thing and might have perished at the vets office after a day or two so I took a Chance. I trusted my intuition.

She recovered in a few hours — but they did hydrate her under the skin which may have been helpful. I dunno.

Final diagnosis from the vet— pancreatitis. Now she’s eating low fat food.

and I saved $600 - $ 1,200.

Vets are greedy too.

Funny, they said something to the effect of “we are not going to release her”. I just grabbed her and took her home.

Another Lesson.

If it is a bot fly usually it’s no big deal. In most cases fhey eventually just pop out.

I paid the vet $600 for threee visits and he did not detect the problem.

I found the bump.

It is very distressing when an living creature has a parasite feeding on it. It causes anxiety, loss of appetite, lethargy and bloody stools (from the stress).
