Its interesting because wtf possible evolutionary advantage could there be in turning off your vision for microseconds? the evolution of eyes / eyelids / tear ducts and all the wetware processing that goes along with it makes no sense,

anything evolving to have have crusty dry eyes amongst species that have no sight is ludicrous, they would probably loose sight within hours, die of infection etc it days.
