Well then, is this yet another Hail Mary pass that was thrown by ass-hats? Given MSM and more specifically this outlet's history, yeah, I can see how this is the most plausible explanation of this essay.

IMHO, I think this tactic lends some serious credibility about ass-hats' comms and satellites going dark for them and everyone is scrambling to fill the news cycle and keep up their crap.

Stylometry is a thing and has has been for a long time. With the invention of the internet and the NSA collecting all information they can, it's how they attribute certain messages to people for identification. Unless the person that wrote this has some sort of personality disorder, he/she will be caught with his/her own words.

A Senate investigation into the matter determined that the emails had all originated in the federal government’s Energy Information Agency, and even better than that, all the emails from the three “different” sources had actually come from just one person employed by the EIA.

On top of that, the one EIA employee was nowhere close to truly being a “senior” official of any sort. At the time he wrote the first email quoted by The Times, he was actually an intern with the EIA. He had been promoted one rung on the ladder to be an entry-level analyst when he wrote the others.

This is the best explanation yet: A profesisonal writer penned, it, one who is both proficient as a ghostwriter and op-ed writer.

This article deserves careful study before continuing on. The suspected writer is clearly espousing neocon talking points, and the evidence piles up.

As a former ghostwriter and press secretary, I would say almost surely the article was ghostwritten. It does not have a personal style. I also think it probably was shopped to the New York Times op-ed page by a person experienced in media relations and with a close, even confidential, relationship with the Gray Lady.

This makes a prime suspect Kristol’s good friend Peter Wehner.

Wehner is a veteran, Triple-A utility player in the leagues of neoconservative think tanks and journals. He is a sidekick of the Washington Post’s Church Lady, Michael Gerson, whom he assisted on the White House speechwriting staff during the presidency of George W. Bush.

The article closely matches what Wehner and Gerson have been saying forever about President Trump and his administration. The whole litany is there, offering the Wehner/Gerson/Bill Kristol/Eliot Cohen version of right and wrong approaches to Russia, trade, international democracy, and the sanctity of John McCain.

Most of all, the article is bathed in the self-righteous moralism for which Gerson and Wehner are famous.

“At the root of the problem,” the article says, “is the president’s amorality.”

I believe this is cover for someone at the NYT that actually wrote the emails thinking they were an untouchable entitled snowflake, realized they were in serious trouble and the NYT is desperately trying to cover for them, either way, without vetting any of the information I think the NYT will shortly assume the dying cockroach position as they kick and scream into bankruptcy and endless libel courts

It could very well be that the student saw it, stole it, and submitted it, because, um, kids are that stupid.

I mean, why would a student at USC write an 'essay' in which he or she claimed to be an official in the White House?

I confess, 1) I am an alum of USC; 2) I taught college English for 23 years.
