Hurricane Preparedness and Pets
I know that most everyone reading this already knows this stuff, but there is always the chance that there are new pet parents or people who are just unsure about what to do.

And there are people who have great advice to offer that has not been posted, so please add your thoughts to this thread.

Hurricane Preparedness and Pets

1. Do not leave your pet behind
2. Do not chain your pet to anything
3. Do not tranquilize your pet, pets need to be alert to rely on their instincts
4. Water, be sure to include your pet in the amount of water you need for your family
5. Your pet will be stressed so don't forget his favorite blanket and toy
6. Have stickers or signs on your door to alert to number pets in the house

Get your dog a thunder shirt or you can make one using a tight tee-shirt
Keep handy your dogs collar with ID tags and leash
Have photos of your dog, some with you and your family

Create a pet emergency kit in advance
Hydrogen peroxide, wet wipes and medications, have at least a 3 week supply
Pet food, enough for 2-3 weeks
Proof of vaccination in a ziploc bag

Stock up on poopie bags and wee wee pads or newspapers

Place all your animals in one room away from windows (if possible) and place carriers, crates, collars and leashes in the same room so you will have them handy when you need them.

Cats like to hide during storms, you might want to crate your cat for safety

Pets sense weather disasters days in advance so they may be stressed already without anybody noticing. If you panic your animals will panic too, pets can sense human emotions.

If you absolutely have to leave your pet behind and I hope that you don't, even if your pets normally get along, you should separate them. The anxiety of a storm could alter their normal behavior.

Please add any advice, suggestions and tips...

I'm praying for everyone in the path of Florence! Be safe!

Good thread thumbs Should be common knowledge for pet owners but people under stress forget important things so do yourselves a favor, make a bugout checklist ahead of time and write it down.

Truth.

However we have an indoor-outdoor cat that would be telling us to head to Vegas while he keeps an eye on the neighborhood. Out of the dozens of pets I've had, Id believe him.

Stay safe Southeast Coasters.

So many poor little guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits need to be moved to safety.

I hope the people who live in these areas don't have a lot of small pets.

In addition to the ideas above, if you are in an area that you don't have to evacuate but may lose power for a while, battery powered fans will help. They not only cool you off but your pet too. Also, cooling mats are a good idea for your pets.

Be prepared and stay safe.

I looked around on some forums...looks like people put their small animals in the car and go. That's good. I didn't think people would leave their little friends to die.

Please keep this thread pinned.

IHG Hotels (Holiday Inns, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Staybridge) are waiving pet fees for #hurricaneflorence (trending #HurricaneFlorerence) for NC, SC, and VA now.
(I apologize, this was posted by another member and I didn't copy the name)

The Cajun Navy Rescue & Relief (large volunteer agency) will rescue you and your pets. You will need to submit a form online. They currently have volunteers stationed in Columbia, SC waiting to deploy. Go to: [link to www.cajunnavyrelief (secure)] (dot) com

Also in hotels and motels that take pets - just in case you are traveling away rom the storm or stop off before getting to relatives and want to sleep- you might need more rest if you were up all the previous night and not be able to drive all day or night

Just have the carriers with you

Some hotel chains that DO NOT ACCEPT PETS will take pity on evacuees- but ONLY IF THEY HAVE A CARRIERb

This seems like a good place to start.

They have a pretty good list of shelters throughout NH.
They also have lots of advice and tips and even a "contact us" button.

OK, I think I posted animal shelters and you were looking for pet friendly emergency shelters.

I couldn't find any either but I did find pet friendly travel locations.

Sorry, that was the best I could find, but I hope it helps.

What to do when you have 40 head of cattle and 50 chickens?
We are not in the path but living in Florida the need could arrive.

We have a good friend who has land that is one of the highest points in Florida. If need be we would make a few trips with the cows and take the chickens last to stay penned up in the cattle trailer.

Anyhow that's my plan if thing go awry here.
