need advice on kid's sports regarding age groups
my son plays on an age 10-12 team. He's 10. He's one of the better players on his team. His coach is already talking to him about going to the coach's high school to play for him.

His coach's son is 12 and will be 13 next season (spring). So the coach will move up to 12-14 group for his son.

question... pros and cons of signing a special exemption on my 10 year old playing next spring in the 12-14 group?

I'm asking now because I might take a while to convince the league to let my son play up.

He'll turn 11 during the season, so 11 year old playing in the 12-14 age group?

thanks in advance

Is he a big dude? As in physically same size/ability than the 12-14 year olds? Or does he have the talent to hang with the older kids? If so then I would say go for it. If you just want him to have the same coach then I dont think it will work out for you unfortunately. But who know...

thanks!

yes, he's the size of a 13 yo. He's very smart and one of the better players on the team.

My wife's concern is the language and discussions of the 14 year olds.

besides what the kids talk about, is there any thing else of concern?

i would leave him be. if he is as good as you say, it will show later. Reality is chances he will play a major sport, or even a college sport are very slim. You can google that or ask someone. kids can no longer be kids in todays world and grow up way to fast in every area. I have known teens who were great when young and moved ahead, pushed to excell. We can go overboard when we think we are doing the best thing. good luck in your decision. :)

Well boys will be boys, and locker room talk will always be dirty lol. If he really is that good then its a win win i would say, the team gets a good player, and your son gets an extra year of practice at a higher level which will increase his skills. Also he might not be as good comparatively on the older team so he will strive to be better and prove himself (if he has good drive). The only thing I would worry about is bullying at the beginning, all kids that age are kind of assholes lol, and as the youngest one he will most likely get picked on. One of two things will happen, he works harder to prove himself to the team and they will respect him for that, or it will get to him and he might want to quit or move back to his old team. Either way its a good lesson imo. Ultimately I say it should be his decision, if he wants to move up its because he actually cares about the sport, if he doesnt he just wants to be with his friends in a competitive atmosphere (nothing wrong with that at all) Again, just my opinion.
Cheers.

i appreciate your feedback.

we're not pushing him, it's just that he's had six coaches and this is the only coach that he, my wife, and I all like.

They might maul him abit on the field until he is battle hardened, and the older boys will also probably make fun of his smaller pecker in the shower thats about all i can think of.

Actually, there's no bullying. Great group of kids.

Most of his team is 12yo now and will move up to 12-14 next time. So he'll be with the same group of guys. My concern is that there will be a few 14 year olds without a team who will join his team.

... y'all helped me with the decision. Thanks! I just realized that the coach won't put up with inappropriate discussions and the guys are never alone without an adult. There's no locker room or other private areas.

...

a little bragging about the kids... when our team has a big enough lead, they'll move one defender to attack and all the good attackers will pass him the ball, box out the other team and give the defenders a chance to score.

They did that with our goalie last season. Last game of the undefeated season, they go up by six goals, put the goalie on attack the entire second half and he got is first goal of his young career. Granted the back up goalie played zero minutes that season as he was on defense and the other team scored four times on him... lol, he was so frustrated.

great group of young men.
