is a cyber attack against gas utilities possible?
So what they are saying now is that the entire system overpressurised forcing gas into homes.

I know nothing about utilities, but I think I read somewhere that electric utilities through their SCADA systems can be compromised and not just to turn them off but to change stuff to cause real damage?

is a cyber attack against gas utilities possible? Can someone from outside force a gas utility system to increase pressure?

thanks for any insight

The new smart meters can be programmed to do anything the hacker wants them to.

At least the old analog meters had a mechanical means of regulating overpressure.

Be interesting to see how they safeguard catalysts, mecanicwlly.

I would hope not!

sorry, i thought smart meters were for electricity? do they also control gas? so a hacker could control smart meters and increase gas pressure into a home? into 100s of homes?

They got smart meters for both now. And water too. Not in all areas (yet)

The utility companies have gotten greedy and lazy.
They don't have to hire meter readers any more, and then they sell your usage and electricity/gas/water habits to the highest bidder.

Disgusting. They need to be in the business of delivering utilities and nothing more.

And hacking the meters is easy if you know the coding and how to remotely get into the system.
The meters are encrypted, but the software/hardware is vulnerable.

Remember back in the Windows 95 days, how you could get into the DOS, type in: <format C/> and completely wipe the computer?
Well it's basically that simple on these meters once you get into them. You can change any parameter too.

thanks for all your info!

are the meters data only or can they control gas flow?

Don't know about gas, but the electric ones can be shut off remotely if you're not paying your bills.

I'm rural, so don't have gas or water utilities, just electric.
They're pushing the "smart meters" here hard, a lot of controversy. This is where I'm hearing all the evils about them. All of what I posted earlier, plus theres people who say the RF (microwave) they emit is harmful.

Some form of slight change to cause buildup?

If you're referring to static charge, that's impossible. The gas lines are underground.

No maybe pressure or small movement?
