Presidential Alert - identifying compromised iphones?

Older phones don't have the software update.

What software update? I was under the assumption that the alert went out to "cell phones"...

Makes infinitely more sense than OP's theory.

It's all good. Just the timing the alert along with the publishing of the article.

I'm curious too as to which "update" you are referring to. My iPhone 7 still has version 10 running.

Uh my Android phone is a year old and did not get it.

So is the theory: with these chips, and now with the mass text, China can infiltrate the new emergency alert system? And either prevent an actual national emergency text...or even make their own?

I don't know ... I would think (I WOULD HOPE) we would have something now in place to combat that

Super interesting read. Puts future cyber warfare into a new perspective for me. China probably has several other similar chips and hacks in our tech that are still undiscovered. It's pretty stunning to think about.

Even if my theory doesn't hold water, it is a very good and frightening read.

I was thinking that "we" the US Government have identified how the chip works and was testing it or possibly "killing it?"

That could explain my iphone 4. Not finding any software update related info though.

In order to receive an alert, the phone's OS and cellular carrier must both be configured to support the protocol, and alerts have to be enabled in the phone's settings menu(only applies to certain Android phones, usually rooted).

If you didn't receive one, it's probably due to one of those 3 issues. Or maybe you had no reception when it was sent.

I did not receive the alert and I have an iPhone 8

I have a 2 year old android phone and I got the alert. I do have alerts enabled on my phone.

I haven’t gotten the alert either I have an iPhone 7
