Caught someone breaking into my house Wednesday night - Crazy shit

If the intruder had already removed 3 screen prior to finding your window open that indicates he was hell bent on getting in. You would think just the vehicles being in the driveway would have been a deterrent. Burglars might night be murderers but it seems he was willing to risk A LOT to get inside.

Who knows how we would react in that situation. My bet is, if he was brazen enough to do all of the above.. he likely didn't learn a damn thing.

All good OP. Handled with a level head. Taking a life is a hell of a thing. And even if you are sure your kids were in bed, you can never be too certain. Always need the target identified before pulling a trigger. Even if our last VP told us just to shoot a shotgun through the front door. You did good.

I can now say I know firsthand how important understanding the world we live in, and being prepared for it is. It's easy to brush the thought off as something that happens to someone else, but that would have had me physically fighting them in the dark and unprepared.

hey the most important thing is nothing happened to you and yours in that situation. and who knows... it might have been someone first time stupid idea to do this. and you might have made him realize this is how he gets shot and his mom or baby mama crying.

This will be the one thing that sticks with me in the form of regret. Someone else might not be armed and might not be awake to greet them.

And no, I did not see his face in a defining way, just that is was a white guy I believe and that he was in his early twenties most likely (horrible description, I know). I have those bigger, fancy blinds, so they blocked a decent amount of the view except slivers between.

Probably better put up security cameras. My experience is that they hit a house, and then come back again. They'll be watching the house to see when you aren't there and then try again. But they might not realize not everyone left... Had a situation in our area like that, except when they came back thinking everyone was gone, they surprised the wife in the house, she ended up getting shot... :-( SO, keep any eye pealed and maybe start a neighborhood watch program! Anything to make the neighborhood very unappealing to discourage them to from coming back.

Hey its never a good thing to take a life. Your house sounds like a random pick so now you know you need some window locks on the windows so they wint go up all the way. If i had 5 children and wasnt for sure if it could be them, i would have done what you did. If you had an ar15 or other rifle, you could have hit him like a basball bat.

I have multiple AR's, AK's and shotguns, but they all stay put up in the safe. I keep a handgun stashed for these types of situations. Would have felt much better with a rifle lol.

The one window being unlocked is totally my dumbass fault. I had it opened a few days ago to run an extension cord out for a few minutes and didn't lock it back up correctly. I flipped the lever, but it went above the seat, not in it.

I personally know some idiots that did b and e’s in their youth, I think you did the right thing. Hopefully, he learned next time the homeowner may not be so conciderate as to give a warning.

There's a huge difference between the guy who will break in during the day to steal a TV and the type of individual who will enter a home at night well aware that people are likely inside. The individual who breaks in at night is much more likely to be armed and much more likely to harm any persons with whom he has contact. In the early eighties in Baton Rouge there was a serial rapist named John Simonis aka "the ski mask rapist." He along with an accomplice would enter a home (usually through an unlocked door) around dusk. He would rape his intended victim while the accomplice held a gun on her husband or boyfriend. A judge died of a heart attack while Simonis was raping his wife. My mother-in-law was one of his victims.

If anyone were to try and break into my house, they will be met by 2 working line Dutch shepherds and a Belgian Malinois. Then 00- buck, slug, 00- buck, slug. Which is Unlikely, The doors and windows are secure for the would be intruders safety.

Service in the Army teaches a wide variety of non-lethal uses of the M-4 rifle: Buttstroke to the head, to the groin, a vicious sidestroke. You can jack someone up quite seriously without killing them. It is good knowledge/skillset to possess.

Get some motion activated security lights and cameras.

If you are going to wait for someone to enter the house with the intention of shooting them, don't ever admit to that. It makes it sound like you COULD have avoided the shooting but you willfully waited.

Brush up on the correct legal language to use in case of a shooting, and things you should NEVER say or admit to. If you had waited and let him crawl in, then shot and killed him, his family could sue you for unjustifiable homicide. They might lose the case but either way it's a huge cost to you.

Always safe to say "I was afraid for my life".

20 years ago, we had a serial rapist in our neighborhood.

This guy was ballsy enough to attack when couples were home together. Tying up the man and making him watch his wife/ girlfriend getting raped.

It was about 11pm at night, we were sleeping, I feel cold air come in from the window next to the bed and it wakes me up.

For a minute I think "did I leave the window open"?
I then realized the window was slowly sliding up...

I grab my POS .22 and unload it towards the window. (no kids at the time)

To this day I have no idea if I hit the guy. I did hit a car parked in front of our home a few times. Police came, took a report. Put out a bolo for area hospitals receiving anyone with a GSW. Cops told me to get a larger caliber handgun and learn to shoot better.

We spent the night in a hotel, and moved out the next morning. Told the landlord... Fuck your lease. I was 22 at the time and dumber than a bag of rocks.

You did good OP! My grandparents back in the depression woke up to a huge man standing over their bed. It turned out he was a severely mentally retarded man that lived in the neighborhood and most probably was looking for food to eat. This was in Oklahoma and just about everyone was starving then. It was lucky for him that they didn't shoot him right away!
