Nervous breakdown question
Someone close to me is going through this. He has a psychiatrist appointment made. My question is to those who have been through it (I know everyone's different) did you find counseling or medication to be more effective?

Re: Nervous breakdown question
Try to keep him off medication. It's so dangerous. Is there any holistic way? Exercise? Walking? Change of Diet? Meditation? Earthing?

I know many people that went the medication route and ended up committing suicide. Be sure to read the insert that comes with the medication prior to him taking it. You can find it on line, or the pharmacist can provide it to you before the prescription is filled.

Both are necessary. You will cover it up with drugs. The therapy is to help the person develop tools for coping with life's issues.

Re: Nervous breakdown question
I have not had a complete one, but close enough.

Everyone is differnent.

I found a great intensive therapy group for two hours a day, five days a week -- 3 months.

Worse yet, I had already been exercising and meditating -- so I needed more. Turns out Radical Acceptance is a nice tool to have when there is a permanent medical issue or life changing event.

Whatever you decide to help with, just give them time to heal. Time really is the best gift and laundry soap :)

Agree with the above. Medication will only mask the issue.

Here is my theory on anxiety/depression. Those feelings are like hunger or thirst. Your body is telling you to act.

Anxiety or Depression is telling you one of two things a) You are doing something that you should not be doing and need to stop, or b) you aren't doing something you should be and you need to start. Period.

Fix the thing that is wrong and you will live peacefully again.

Been there, done that.

bump The so called Nervous breakdown.. is the presence of more stress than the persons mind can process.. Medicine will not fix that.. Friendsl... counseling.. support ...possibly putting other issues aside for the time being to allow space for the most important stresses to be processed? The mind has a limit in some people and something has to be put aside so the mind doesn't break. Sorting is necessary in other words. Perhaps friends can take care of some of the excess issues?

Re: Nervous breakdown question
They drugged me up too much and it made it worse. Then less control because I was completely dependent on getting my refills. If I had to miss a dr appointment because of work then I had the fun of withdrawal. Therapy helped. And look into herbals. St. John’s wort is as effective for me as cymbalta was. I can get it otc, a ton cheaper, and no real withdrawals. It took time. For me, I had several pretty big life catastrophes in a row, plus post partum depression. I think I just had to figure out how life worked again with all the change. That took time to adapt. Longer than I’m proud of, but the drugs they gave me made it harder, not easier. I’m sure that’s going to depend on the specifics, but that’s my experience.

Thank you so much everybody. I've been paralyzed with fear worried about him ever since this all started. I'm really hoping he goes the counseling route because I know he has unresolved issues.

Totally agree. Think it as a holistic crisis, too - body, mind, and spirit all calling out for a different direction. Something has to give, one way or the other.
Perhaps start with nutrition and offering gentle support.

As you think.

Screw Rx and shrinks only help if you truly open. Having someone to talk to is good for relieving stress. 99.999% of shrinks are just as messed up as their clients but they had the resources to go to school and become licensed. They listen to other people's problems to prevent themselves from dealing with their own. "If I can help just 1 person [insert whatever they experienced here]" syndrome.

Good luck to your friend.

don't presume to tell us that have defended you that you don't support every shot we fired to eliminate that enemy.

Something I noticed with him was the last couple months when he was sleeping he made a high pitched noise, and it was almost constant throughout the night. Any takes on what this was? I just know there was a correlation.

Like moaning in pain as if in distress?

I have heard people do that when having nightmares or were otherwise being attacked in dreams in their sleep.
