This is an old survival tip used in times before refrigeration. Amazing.

They can store for up to eight months and even longer. But if you want to see how they turn out here's the follow up video.

Five dozen fresh farm eggs, two and one half gallons of spring water if you have it, and one cup of slack or hydrated lime mixed into the water, fills a five gallon bucket. Make sure all the eggs are under the milky water, then just snap on the lid tightly.
The solution to most problems is generally close at hand.

Hydrated lime is limestone that has been crushed and milled as well as put through a kiln and heated up a lot.

Cool method though! Never knew that. I'm wondering what the difference is in hydrated lime bought from the Ag store and that bought from the hardware store? I thought hydrated lime was hydrated lime.

My challenge would be finding plenty of nice clean unwashed eggs! There is always a little something on them even in dry pens.

Needs a tier system to raise the eggs and get out the oldest first.

If you hang up some lights (I use solar party lights) in your coop, your chickens will lay daily this winter.

Just be sure to supplement the niacin they are missing out on from summer foraging.

Well if you are just using them through the winter months, they will all be basically the same. She did say eight months, but has heard they can stay good much longer than that. So, eight months to one year, they will likely all be used before spring.

well, lucky me ... I have refrigeration ... but this is good to know in case of an EMP, I guess

I stop giving my extra eggs away to my neighbors, in Early September ... and a shelf in my frige with eggs in cartons, until they stop laying ... they will still lay - 3 or four eggs a week ... so I still try to get them before they freeze (keep the nesting boxs deep with hay) and that way, I have plenty of eggs all year ... really hate having to buy them in the store ... knowing what they are fed and how they are abused

Maybe just try using a dry vegetable brush or wash cloth? More of a polish than a wash. Might get most of it off.

Eta, she does actually say not too use any eggs that are dirty, so, maybe just use those fresh? 1dunno1

As a scientist, I love experiments. I love to be proven wrong just as much as I love to be proven right.

A few years back, a local store had 1 dozen eggs for $1.

I had heard that coating eggs with mineral oil would allow them to keep for an extended period of time without refrigeration. I thought it was bullshit but this experiment was only going to cost me $20 so why not give it a go?

I bought 10 dozen for a grand total of $10 (not counting tax.)

I bought mineral oil for about $4.

My wife, at the time, and I coated all of the eggs with mineral oil and put them in our pantry. No refrigeration and the house was kept @ 72F year round.

Neither she nor I were huge egg eaters so they weren't eaten quickly.

The last egg was eaten approximately 10 months later. In the 10 month period, three eggs went bad out of 120.

If you want to keep eggs for the long haul without refrigeration, mineral oil is your best bet.

They are not fetuses unless they are fertilized. If you don't keep a rooster you won't get fertilized eggs. Even then, a fertilized egg will not become an embryo unless it is incubated within a week or two after it is layed. Since we always gather eggs on a daily basis, we will not be eating embryonic eggs.

So boom yourself, you are talking nomsemse.

Mine only stop laying for a few weeks this time of year during molting, I keep a light going for winter like others said also. It gets as low as -20F in the winter and they still lay.

The thought of eating an old egg does not sound good to me. I do freeze some, in the shell for extra needs.
