Maybe it has something to do with not giving out homework and allowing the children to retake tests until they get a good grade.

Or lowering the passing grades so everyone can 'feel' good about how they performed on the test.

Maybe if they wouldn't have changed the way the teach then kids would have a chance.

That's because during the tests, they can't ask Google for the answer. Think about that.... Take a picture of the math problem and upload to google for the answer. whola!

It's not just the US, it's the whole western world. Average IQs have been dropping.

All down to dysgenics.

I think kids already get a passing mark by just putting their name on the paper.

The smart kids in my sons class did very well.

Two got perfect 800s on SAT math. A handful got higher than 700.

One of the handful will be going to MIT.

I tried to help my nephew out with common core math and holyshit... reading the directions for how to do those math problems was like having a lobotomy. A math problem that would normally take 3-4 seconds to solve in 1 or 2 steps was closer to 10-15 steps and took over a minute of retardedness. If I ever saw that math from someone I hired they would be fired on the spot. How that shit ever got passed is a travesty. The department of education should be entirely defunded for this alone

How discouraging it was as a math major in college who did very well in math - spend half an hour on 8th grade math problem and give up in disgust! I told him to leave me alone and ask the teacher.

He told me the teacher didn’t know how to do it either.

The teacher confirmed it to me in open house.

I know they do work hard, especially considering they have little to work with and severe overcrowding. On top of that, they are projecting a teacher shortage of around 100,000 by either 2021, or 2025. That said, I think many of the unions have done wrong by the teachers. Much of their training is based on social justice nonsense. Which leads to an overabundance of teachers who are left with no time to actually TEACH.

Most students retain very little from the previous year, because they are only taught to memorize info for the standardized tests, to get more money for the schools. I would guess half the year is spent on remedial teaching of the year before.

This info is culminated by 8th grade ( transition from grade school to high school). The last studies posted showed that fewer than 50% of 8th graders were proficient in English or math, in all US states,for the 8th grade.

Teachers may work hard, but we have a serious public education problem in this country. Unless teachers get a hold on their Political Action centered unions, it is NOT going to get any better.

Nothing beyond basic algebra is needed unless you're in some AP higher ed class and you're looking to make math your life. Advanced math is useless if you're not and hinders many students from excelling academically in other areas.

The fact is this is how I do larger numbers in my head.

So some brainiac wanted 7 years old to apply that abstract concept to a number that should be simple.

To think logically can be useful in all aspects of life. Math is a subject in which there is NO gray area. You are either right OR wrong. You cannot be both. Thus, you learn cause and effect. Personally, I believe this to be invaluable.

You will need math if you want to learn computer coding. Nearly all stem fields are moving more towards managing databases and coding for statistics.

Most teachers are women. Liberal women.

They give out participation trophies for giving the wrong answer.

The difficulty in requirements to pass or graduate has gone UP. You can't pass with a D or even a C any more. Used to anything above 50 was passing. It was moved to 60 by the time I graduated and is probably higher now. You can't get by with average grades.

Actually they are not teach proper math.

My son is in the 6th grade and is in the TAG program. They are doing decimals and long division right now. I know in the late 70’s, we did that in the 4th grade.
