It signals the locomotive to initiate emergency braking if it's still connected to it. If it's not, it does nothing. Once train cars lose air brake pressure, they automatically brake until they stop. They are required to have hand brakes (the crank wheel thing) like every other rail car, so perhaps this is what they are referring to. |
