Large Asteroid Packing 50 Megatons Of Force Might Come Crashing Down On Earth In 2023
A large asteroid could be headed toward us in the near future — barreling through space on a risk trajectory that might cause it to collide with Earth.

The news comes from the Express, which cites NASA sources revealing that the space rock could end up engaged in not one, but a staggering 62 different potential impact trajectories with our planet — each of them waiting to sling the asteroid toward Earth over the next 100 years.

Known as asteroid 2018 LF16, the space rock was last observed by our astronomers on June 16 — notes NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) — who calculated its orbit and its potential to become a threat to our planet. The calculations showed asteroid 2018 LF16 could collide with our planet on 62 different dates between now and 2117.

The first of these unnerving opportunities arises just five years from now — occurring on August 8, 2023. Other potential impact dates in the near future fall on August 3, 2024, and on August 1, 2025.

50 megatons of kinetic energy is not a lot.

If it does hit, it will most likely miss any cities/towns.

The only Doomsday scenario is if it hits the Yellowstone caldera.

A nuclear bomb is different than a meteorite and asteroid impact. The impact zone ejects most of that debris high into the atmosphere. It take take months for all of that dust and crap to finally fall back to the Earth's surface. It usually takes multiple meteorite strikes in a rapid succession to cause planetary temperatures to seriously fall due to all of the debris launched high into the Earth's atmosphere.

Any asteroid with such close approaches is an excellent prospect for mining.

Close approaches mean that the delta V required to put the asteroid into high Earth orbit is minimal. Don't worry; high Earth orbit is absolutely safe. You don't see Luna crashing into our planet, do you?

Mass drivers as envisioned by Dr. Gerard O'Neill are good candidates to change the orbit of such asteroids over a period of a few years especially if we use gravity assists in passing Venus, Luna, or Earth.

Many NEOs (Near Earth Objects) appear to be burned out comet nuclei. They are high in carbonaceous materials (think asphalt mixed with oil and gasoline) as well as water. That water is easily extracted and can be used for propulsion, e.g., nuclear-thermal rocket engines.

With nuclear-thermal engines, we can access the entire inner Solar System.

Some of the metallic asteroids have enormous quantities of platinum group metals that can be extracted.

Asteroid mining of NEOs is not only profitable but prudent. Mining those NEOs means they will no longer be a threat to our earthly existence.

When I was an aerospace engineer, one of my duties was creating a long range plan for our division every year.

Most of the plan was forecasting which government programs were coming up for bid and how we would budget to win them.

However, there was a part of the plan that dealt with opportunities up to 20 years out.

In my last Long Range Plan, I forecast that there would be opportunities to sell missions to NEOs. Our company had both the Apollo capsule experience as well as an appropriate launch vehicle.

Note that NEOs are accessible with missions lasting only about two weeks and using minimal delta V.

The idea is that we would sell a mission for several billion to any customer whether government, corporation, or entrepreneur, to actually visit an asteroid and claim it as a mining property.

I pointed out that in previous gold rushes, the merchants selling supplies such as shovels always made money even if the miners did not.

After the customer claimed the asteroid, we would sell more missions to provide transportation and logistics for them to mine it.

I proposed that we engineer a new market, a Gold Rush to Space.

I was surprised when the executives did not throw me out of the room. Indeed, my proposal remained in the long range plan.

BTW, don't worry about NASA. They don't have any assassins on the payroll. They are too busy writing memos and stabbing other employees in the back to get promoted.

I hope it has improved, but NASA had become a bureaucratic quagmire when I was at the end of my career.
