You can try a search under Uyghurs or the other spelling Uighurs. Thanks for the link, interesting read. Scanning the more recent articles, it looks like the Chinese government is not allowing the UN or other countries access to the area to evaluate for human rights violations and they continue to close down more religious stuff, like an Arabic language school for underprivileged students. Seems like they aren't backing down from these reeducation camps and are threatening retaliation of unspecified means against any country interfering with their policies. Recent articles: [link to www.japantimes.co.jp (secure)] Much more at the link: BEIJING – On state television, the vocational education center in China’s far west looked like a modern school where happy students studied Mandarin, brushed up their job skills and pursued hobbies such as sports and folk dancing. But earlier this year, one of the local government departments in charge of such facilities in Xinjiang’s Hotan prefecture made several purchases that had little to do with education: 2,768 police batons, 550 electric cattle prods, 1,367 pairs of handcuffs and 2,792 cans of pepper spray. So, I personally have no problem with them trying to solve that problem. I worry more about them brain washing them and training them for their warfare needs instead. It is not an unknown action by Governments. So it is not ludicrous to consider that possibility. There have been other Nations one more than any others move against China over the terrorist incubating peoples in their Nation, even with them killing their people by it. Sad while at the same time it is what it is and that is exactly what it is, who can really defend it? Quoting: Wondering Mind So, I personally have no problem with them trying to solve that problem. I hear ya, but the region has 24 million people in it and estimates put the internees at upwards of 1 million people so far, with continuing construction of more facilities. On top of that, it is not just Muslim, which is the majority religion of the ethnic minorities of that region that is being reeducated, it is any and all religions. The concern here, at least on my part, is that once they perfect their techniques in this location, it will spread. Already there is a crackdown on Christianity nationwide. And, the original article posted by the OP states that the government is cracking down on Tibetan Buddhists. Basically, anyone that isn't for the Communist Party is a candidate for detention. And while the stated goal is to give education for jobs and love of country, how long will it be before the lists begin to be compiled of the irredeemable and what will they do to those people? History shows that genocide would not be out of the question in this situation. Article from last week about the crackdown on Christianity: [link to www.express.co.uk (secure)] CHRISTIANITY CRACKDOWN: Fury as students BANNED from discussing religion CHRISTIAN students in China are banned from speaking about their faith as a nationwide crackdown against religion intensifies. It all sounds a bit too Communist for my tastes. |
