We prey on lesser beings so to me it seems logical that higher beings would prey on us. We got lucky that we are the most highly evolved beings on this planet but it's very unlikely we are the highest evolved beings in this galaxy let alone the universe if we consider how many stars and planets there are. Evolution is a real bitch.
