We received a call from her surgeon today telling us the tube went in well and shes holding her food. They're going to continue to feed her throughout the night and tomorrow, slowly increasing food amount and reducing anti nausea meds to monitor tolerance. He finally revealed that up until today his outlook was guarded but hes happy to see her progress today and hopes to see it continue. We're not out of the woods by any means but the candle is a little brighter than it was earlier today. Quoting: TinfoilHatMan You're a wonderful internet family... thank you all for your human compassion for animals. Heres a pic of our girl before this pancreatitis took her down. User ID: 23615726 United States 12/23/2018 10:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My small elderly dog came down with pancreatitis summer before last. I was thinking she wasn’t going to make it. It happened on a holiday weekend so I took her home and just kept her comfortable. But I believe she got the condition from pepperoni strips I was giving her for treats. They have so much fat in them. The vet gave me a prescription diet of Purina low-fat dog food. For over a year I cooked her food at home (Rice and boiled chicken) and added the Purina prescription dog food. I also give her low fat dog treats-turkey flavor. I was so happy to see a dog that I thought would never run again romping through the grass. It took many months for her to get better. I had to carry her most of the time. Lowfat is the way to eat with this condition Last Edited by Electric Ladyland 33 on 12/23/2018 10:06 PM |

(OP) User ID: 73416116 United States 12/23/2018 10:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi Everyone, I'll try to answer and comment on everyone's great input, advice, questions and comments. Keifa just turned 10. She has a history of tick borne diseases but rarely has an flare up. When she does, shes stiff and lazy. We get her to the vet he confirms with an instant blood test and treats with doxycycline. Next day shes better but we always complete the 10 day prescription. This has only happened once in the last five years.. a few more times before that. Besides that shes very healthy, full of life, runs with me weekly, she can jump fences, she smart and can keep up with humans for a full 18hr day. Damn good for a 10yr old dog, I'd say. The hospital is choosing to feed her because she hasn't eaten in seven days. While dogs can efficiently burn stored food, the dr said there's additional benefits for her recovery if she can process food digested orally. This is also a critical milestone to coming home... ability to hold down and process food and water. Typically treatment would be similar to humans but they realize we cannot hospitalize her indefinitely and, I believe, are trying to determine is she can handle a release before full recovery with home care. We have taken her out for walks both yesterday and today. Yesterday was brief... she was very sore and weak. Today we went around the hospital grounds twice. She loved it. Every day she can handle it, we will absolutely get her fresh and, vitamin D and some nature! A number of people suggested CBD oils. I will look in to this for sure. It sounds like many people and pets have had amazing indisputable results. Trays what were looking for! Moving forward, yes... ultra low fat diet. I used to bring home by steak trimmings and feed her table scraps... never again. As one power mentioned, we plan to cook for her when we're eating ultra low fat so she has variety but beyold that, as directed. Thankfully she has not been exposed to any of the recalled brands but regardless, her typical Pedagree diet just ended. BRIEF: Always the compassionate, loving contributor we can always count on Buzzcheeze: You are 100% correct. The leave a mark on your heart like a child. No matter what, we will love her and cherish her for ever. She has had an amazing life... boats in the summer, swimming in the pool, camping, playing in the snow, going for runs, car rides, visiting gramma, cuddles at night.... shes lived a wonderful life and hope she continues to. The world isnt dont with her yet! Please keep praying for a Christmas miracle. I'll post s video of my girl. Shes such a character!! Thank you all. Humanity isnt completely lost |

I'm not sure I can help you except to share a few details of our nearly year-long battle w/ this shitty disease. In January (2018), my dog woke us up literally chewing the rug to bits. She doesn't chew, even on toys, so that was strange. Her behavior was just not right. Pacing all over, unable to settle down. Even for an Australian Shepherd, her actiins weren't right. We went to the vet in the morning, ~5hrs later. Vet ran labs and diagnosed pancreatitis (acute). Diet changes were recommended amd strictly adhered to, per the vet, who told us that pancreatitis can become chronic - and deadly - w/o changes. We dropped kibble for cooked rice and boiled chicken. Improvement came rapidly and months went by. Last month, she began exhibiting the same symptoms, but w/ very foul-smelling (I'm talking death smell) liquid stools, lack of appetite, listlessness, and was obviously miserable. We had three vet visits in 36hrs. The vet ordered films after we both noted her (the dog) ribs began to appear 'wider' than usual. Films showed air bubble forming in her stomach and causing pain & discomfort. They GI tubed her and got it out. Next day, she was full of air again, and the death-smelling liquid stool was back. I can't impress upon you how fucking bad that smelled. I grew up on a farm in the country (I own it now) and I am a combat veteran. I've smelled bad fucking things, including lots of dead things. That smell was horrible. The vet just ran out of ideas, and I was on the hook for nearly $1500 by then. She did not improve and we made the difficult decision to put her down. The only thing the vet didn't actually charge us for, ironically. OP, if I had it to do over, I would RELIGIOUSLY make sure your dog only has the most natural food possible. Follow vet's recommendations to the letter. Your dog is in my prayers. I sincerely hope the very best for you guys. Liberty or Death. We feed our son 100% organic certified foods, zero sugars, no sweets and no dairy. He's as healthy as a horse. He loves his sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, any kind of bean or berry and all the fruit and hummus he can get his hands on. I'm going to talk to my wife about just adding Keifas meal prep to the schedule while we prepare Luke's meals. The more I think about it, even the prescription food is still full of GMOs and awful animal parts. If I have to buy a package of organic chicken and arsenic free rice once a week to keep her healthy, so be it. We take better care of the ones we love than we do ourselves. |

User ID: 76005121 United States 12/23/2018 11:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Has your dog in past months eaten any of the dog food - some of it very expensive "artisan" dog food Quoting: beeches on the FDA recall list? It would be tainted with too much Vitamin D. That causes hyperkalemia, basically. I am not certain if it would cause pancreatitis, but if she ate that food, it might be a factor in her situation. Have they tested her Vitamin D serum levels at any time? my own dog died after eating food on the recall. I have been in contact with the maker. There is no question she ingested it for long enough to have repercussions. I wanted my dog to live.... did not know why she went so bad, but at age 16 and a half, dogs do show signs of organ failure. I took care of her as best I could, not trying to prolong her life beyond her ability to wag her tail.. But one day, it was over. She was put down within hours. No more suffering for her. Dogs suffer silently. A vet in the family explained this to me. The major sign of pain is inactivity. Not whimpering, whining, limping, etc. I hope your dog makes a full recovery of her health and wags her tail for many years to come. If that is not going to happen and she is showing you she needs to go, do the right thing. the poster who said take her out of the hospital environment is smart. It is surely worth a try. Healing does not always mean life.... it can mean peace. I will pray for life for her. and I will link to that dog food list, too. In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined: With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world, And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor. (OP) User ID: 77230427 United States 12/24/2018 10:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | White Wolf, thank you for continuing to pray for our girl. We went for a 2hr visit today. She was so happy to see us she was screaming. Dispite the giant cone she had when we arrived, the new feeding tube in her neck and IVs now attached to her rear leg. She still jumped all over us. Her energy is increasing exponentially. The Dr told us they fed her 1/4 of her daily calories and she held it down. Her next feeding was 1/3 and she held that as well. Later today they were going to increase to 1/2. We took her out for a walk and she was sniffing and pulling to chase down scents, happy to me out, tail wagging.. she was doing so well. We brought her back in after about 20 min because we didn't want to over do it not knowing if the exercise was painful but masked by pain meds. The Dr returned while we were cuddling and she told us they're going to start tapering the five GI meds shes on as well as pain meds. If she continues to tolerate her food and water as well as reduced meds, we'll probably have her home in 2-3 days. I'm hoping for Thursday. Thabk you and everyone whose been praying for this gentle soul. We love her and shes such a wonderful energy to have alive on this planet. Here are some pics of her today. All hooked up, holes poked in her but so happy to be with her family. Such a strong girl. [link to imgur.com] Ill plan to call in 90min for a midnight checkup before bed. I'm hoping shes held the most recent larger feeding and the water they allowed us to give her after the came in from the walk. So far it is looking like shes our Christmas Miracle. |
