I have 16 Japanese silkies. 12 of them are almost 10 years old. They still lay and set constantly. Of the 112old enough to lay, atm 4 are setting on nothing because I took their eggs. It’s too cold for chicks but I still am getting 7-8 eggs every day.
Their eggs are smaller but I often have to give some away because these old girls never stop. We never run out of eggs. If you need some broody hens to constantly set , get some silkies. Just remember they are smaller and the larger hens may pick on them.
Someone gave me some motherless chicks and I did not have a hen setting at the time. So I waited until dark and put the chicks under one of the most motherly hens. I call her Little Mama lol! In the morning she was talking to them in chicken mommy language and raised them all perfectly.
She’s a good hen. :) I love my Silkies
