I don't post a lot here. You'll see from my profile. I try to conserve my words; to make them matter as much as possible by using them as little as possible.

With video after video of racially motivated violence, many of you are seeing for the first time, the second time, ... etc - the reality of fighting in a city. I imagine some of you are scared. I'm here to help prepare you.

A little background: I grew up in an all black city, one of the highest violent crime rates in the country. Many of my friends growing up were black. Until they got older and indoctrinated by their families, that is.

Encounters I have survived: Being mobbed at least 3 times by 20 of my 'peers'. They called it 'swooping' back then. They'd pick out one kid on the playground (this happened from ages 10-14). Being sucker punched or attacked numerous times. Fight upon fight, up on fight.

Plot twist, I moved to an all white school district and the same thing happened several times.

This was before I learned martial arts, boxing, judo, etc.

So I think it's probably applicable to teach to those who have no idea how to deal with these encounters.
These encounters happen in several distinct, predictable phases.

PHASE ONE - THE DISTRACTION
Humans in general have a distinct lack of awareness when they are focusing on one thing. This is often exploited. One will come up to you. Talk to you. They will get your attention forward, left, right, whatever. Then someone will sneak up the side and that is when the attack begins.

Preempting this attack by knowing it is coming helps SIGNIFICANTLY in reducing it's effectiveness.

THEY WILL INVARIABLY DRAW CLOSE TO YOU. DO NOT LET THEM CLOSE. ALWAYS KEEP UNKNOWN ACTORS AT ARMS LENGTH OR GREATER.

PHASE TWO - THE ASSAULT
After you are sufficiently distracted, the assault begins. This is very rarely from the front, but instead from the sides, back and other oblique angles. Do not let people behind you (use walls and physical objects to prevent attacks from behind) and be aware of those to your side. They are the real threat.

The attack is rarely avoidable. You are almost always blocked in, unable to exit. You are almost always going to get caught if you run. You have to block the attack and minimize it's damage.

I recommend using this posture:

* Put one hand (your blind side that will likely be attacked) on your chin or the side of your head casually.

* Place your other arm across your body/stomach towards your groin.

The idea here is to protect your face to avoid knockout and groin / midsection.

The attack, if blocked, is frequently not particularly powerful. It is dangerous ONLY if you are unable to block it. If you have been paying attention to what people are doing and not the 'distraction' you will likely minimize the damage from it.

PHASE THREE - THE SWOOP
Part of 'swooping' is physically 'swooping you'. Now we get to the truly dangerous phase of this encounter (assuming you didn't get one-punch KO'd by a sucker punch). You will at this point:
* Be swarmed. All of the 'non-alphas' and 'wannabees' will join in.
* Knocked down. Most of these guys grew up in an athletics program and have at least a rudimentary knowledge of wrestling. They know basic throws and takedowns and are physically capable of enforcing them.

Once you are knocked down, they will proceed to stomp and kick you. Your instinct will be to shell up and protect yourself. We will cover why this doesn't work.
