New initiative to officially declare Tucson as Arizona's first sanctuary city
Campaign launched to make Tucson the first sanctuary city in Arizona

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The push to make Tucson the state’s first sanctuary city is officially underway.

The People’s Defense Initiative held a kick-off event for the “Tucson Families Free and Together” campaign Saturday.

“We’ll take it to Tucson and Tucson will decide,” said Zaira Livier, director of the People’s Defense Initiative.

Livier is the force behind the effort to make the streets of the Old Pueblo a safe refuge. The City of Tucson already identifies as an “Immigrant Welcoming City," but the People’s Defense Initiative wants to take one step more.

Effort launches to make Tucson a sanctuary city

People’s Defense Initiative, a political action committee formed in November, has until July 5 to collect 9,241 valid signatures of registered Tucson voters to get the Tucson Families Free and Together Initiative on the ballot.

The initiative would amend the Tucson City Code to bar police officers and other city employees from detaining people based on immigration status. It also would ban them from aiding in the enforcement of federal immigration laws unless expressly required under state or federal law. The amended code would also prevent certain collaboration between city and federal law enforcement agencies and provide for the certification of visas for some immigrant crime victims.

Will Tucson be Arizona's first 'sanctuary city'? Activist group hopes so

A grassroots human rights group wants Tucson to be Arizona’s first sanctuary city.

People's Defense Initiative is working to get its Tucson Families Free and Together bill on the November ballot.

“We envision a Tucson that serves as a safe refuge for all people regardless of their immigration status, race, color, age, gender identity, ethnicity, ability to speak English, religion, sexual orientation, or economic status,” according to the organization’s website.

The group needs 9,000 valid signatures to get its measure on the ballot. The deadline is July 5.

While Tucson has been an “immigrant welcoming city” since 2012, PDO would like to see the City take the next step – not just welcoming immigrants but actively protecting them.

“Whether called ‘sanctuary’ or some other term, this ordinance takes bold steps to ensure that our city actively prevents community members from being split apart from their families, their livelihoods, and their Tucson community simply because they lack proper papers,” PDI explains on the FAQ page it has put together for those wanting more information about its Tucson Families Free and Together initiative.

Re: New initiative to officially declare Tucson as Arizona's first sanctuary city
Letter: Tucson is already a 'defacto' sanctuary city

A group called the People's Defense Initiative, "people" meaning illegal immigrants, is seeking signatures to put a ballot on the next election officially making Tucson a "sanctuary city." The Tucson City Council has already deemed Tucson as an "immigrant welcoming" city, meaning defacto "sanctuary." They have curtailed the Tucson Police Department from fully enforcing the AZ SB 1070 law requiring police officers to notify immigration authorities when making lawful contact with a suspected illegal immigrant.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors, due to their hate for President Trump and his immigration enforcement policies, has rejected a federal $1.4 million grant to cover the Pima County Sheriff's Office assistance of Border Patrol. Sheriff Napier was essentially intimidated by these people into pulling a lone ICE agent from the Pima County Jail. We recently observed the effects of "sanctuary" California, wherein a legal immigrant police officer was shot and murdered by an illegal immigrant, who had previous arrests and could have been deported.

No one is tearing families apart but the illegals trying to use kids to enter.

Bleeding hearts like you fall for it every time. in many cases, thy are kidnapped or trafficked kids who are not related but sold for sex slavery, organ harvesting or satanic ritual. It is kinder to separate them from the devils who are trafficking them.

Bleeding hearts like ME??? another dolaugh

Sorry, NOT my campaign. I'm just warning people about it because there was a day not long ago when no one in Tucson would have DARED to propose this kind of illegal self destructive bullshit. Not only are those days long gone, but with Tucson's current pinko commie media and occupied government, this initiative has an excellent chance of becoming law.

Please do not bring in 'trap' links like that one! It's a waste of our time. You can't go over and read that story because a block window pops up demanding you allow ads or buy a subscription. I allowed ads and refreshed and they still wouldn't let me in. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to copy the page before that big black window popped up. Thanks for at least posting the best parts of it yourself so we'd know what it was about.
