Large ice disk rotating slowly in Presumpscot River in Westbrook

WESTBROOK, Maine —
A large ice disk has formed in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook and it's slowly rotating, city officials said Monday.

Birds are using the disk as a resting area in the middle of the river, officials said.

Moon river? Giant, spinning ice disc mesmerises in Maine
Published on Jan 15, 2019

A rare ice formation in the Presumpscot river has enthralled the city of Westbrook in Maine. Drone footage taken by Tina Radel, the marketing and communications manager for the city, shows an almost 100-metre circle spinning in a counter-clockwise direction. Scientists say the formation of ice discs is rare but natural, but the surreal appearance of the disk has led to speculation of alien intervention.

LIKE AN ICY lazy Susan; a wintry carousel; a frozen, spinning wheel—it takes little more than an ice disk to capture public attention and imagination.

One such ice disk befell the town of Westbrook, Maine, on Monday, slowly churning to life in the Presumpscot River that runs through the town's urban developments. As of Thursday, the disk was still intact and spinning.

“It kind of looks like a crop circle,” one resident told the Portland Press Herald.

It appears to be in the same spot though it reportedly changes opacity depending on the time of day and cloud coverage. The Herald estimates the ice disk to be 300 feet wide, one of the largest of its kind, but certainly not the first.

There must be some kind of staying, unusual twirl - otherwise this cannot happen, no common flows have these, no matter what type of bends there are...

Then again, nature surprises, now and then.
