Junior is 11th grade here, 16-17

You can start 1st grade in Kentucky at age 5. Some of the surrounding state have gone to the rule you can not start until you are 6. So sometimes graduates are only 17 years old here. So he may only be 15 at this time as a junior, maybe a young 16.

In Michigan when my kids started they had be 5 to start kindergarten on or by December 1, I think they have changed the month now, not sure though.
