He made the remarks in reaction to reports that five Iranian tankers are shipping tonnes of gasoline to Venezuela in defiance of US sanctions on both countries.

A senior official in US President Donald Trump’s administration told Reuters on Thursday that the United States was considering measures against Iran in response to the fuel shipment.

The official said Washington has a “high degree of certainty” that the Venezuelan government is paying Iran in gold for the fuel.

There are unconfirmed reports that the US Navy has deployed its USS Detroit (LCS-7), USS Lassen (DDG-82), USS Preble (DDG-88), and USS Farragut (DDG-99) to the Caribbean along with its patrol aircraft Boeing P8-Poseidon for possible encounter with the Iranian vessels.

However, analysts say it is very unlikely that the US makes such a mistake, as it would have serious repercussions for the Trump administration ahead of the November elections.

The United States could attack Iranian oil ships, Venezuela said

CARACAS, (BM) – Venezuela warned UN Secretary General António Guterres on Friday about a military threat from the United States to Iranian ships carrying fuel to the Bolivarian Republic, Venezuelan ambassador to the UN Samuel Moncada said

“Today we alerted the UN Security Council and Secretary General Antonio Guterres of the threat of imminent use of military force by the United States against Iranian vessels carrying Venezuelan-directed gasoline. An act of war under international law,” Moncada wrote on his Twitter page, attaching a letter, addressed to the secretary general.

On Wednesday, during a speech at a virtual conference of the UN Security Council, Moncada said that creating obstacles for tankers bound for Venezuela is a crime against humanity from the United States.

Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported that the administration of US President Donald trump is exploring the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Iran to block the export of Iranian oil to Venezuela.

After five Iranian tankers set off for Venezuela, the issue of sanctions against the crews of tankers or the confiscation of these tankers in case of refueling in ports of third countries is considered.
