Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

I'd be interested in hearing more about donkeys too. My dear wife seems endeared to them and a draft animal wouldn't be the worst idea that I've tried.

In the past I've had to respond to people who thought it was a great idea to raid abandoned hospitals for supplies in a SHTF situation. My counter argument ran like this: If a hospital has been abandoned then likely all supplies have been transferred to another location. Meanwhile, most hospitals only have a few days of clean linen and other cleaning supplies on hand. By the time you want to raid an abandoned hospital, it would be a literal shithole with very little reward for the risk.

Not to mention what might be left behind could be unfortunate in the extreme. Bodies, bacteria, bombs from previous raiders - God knows, but that would not be a place I'd choose to go hunting.

Donkeys are said to be extremely protective of "their" flocks - sheep, goats, even cattle, I believe.

Don't believe I would think of a donkey as a draft animal. Not large enough, and would be pretty tough on them.

There is no federal law regarding expiration dates.

Product dating is not required by federal law, except for infant formula.

If people understood the mini-ice age, as well as the famine about to hit, the darkness from the solar minimum plus the extreme cover from volcanic ash high in the atmosphere, they would shoot themselves for not having established a large area of permaculture close to their homes.

I don't know much about donkeys. I know that some sheep ranchers keep them as guards against coyotes.

They ride donkeys in some parts of the world. Donkeys and burros are quite tough and pioneers often used them as pack animals.

I know that they have some larger donkeys used for breeding mules from mares.

For a very small farm, they might do for plowing.

When I was a kid my Dad had a Shetland pony that pulled a cart with bicycle wheels. It easily carried two people, so a donkey could do the same.

Hope you are all watching Ice Age Farmer - subscribe to his YT channel, by all means. He has been proven right all along, so see what he has coming out. Next thing is food rationing. Cannot be otherwise, if you have followed all that is happening with food supplies.

I highly recommend him.

I hope I am not being redundant. I am getting to the age when I tell the same stories repeatedly.

However, if you want calories in a cold climate, think ROOT CROPS.

People have grown over 50 tons of potatoes per acre. That is how Irish small farmers managed to support so many people on little land before the fungus attacked the potatoes and they had the famine.

I would plant a variety of roots including beets, turnips, salsify, jerusalem artichoke, etc. That way, if any fall to plant diseased or bugs, you have more in reserve.

Many root crops produce edible greens as well.

The key to survival is not only gardening skills but soil productivity.

If you have even a back yard, now is a good time to add manure, compost, wood chips, minerals, etc.

I have the book "Gardening When It Counts". Some advice is counter intuitive. For example, in poor soil or if you expect little rainfall, plant FARTHER apart so each plant can get nutrients and moisture from a larger area.

If your soil is not great, stick to low-demand veggies. Most of the root crops are low-demand and not so picky about the soil.

Even if you live in a suburban area, you can grow rabbits. They don't make any noise and the manure is perfect for gardening. You can even feed them tree bark and leaves in a SHTF situation.

Root crops will be the easiest, and many, such as every kind of potato, have a heavy calorie and nutritional load, which is exactly what we will most need.

If you have no ground to plant in, get buckets, containers, whatever you can find, and plant in them. I just planted sweet potatoes in a bucket in my garage by a translucent door for light, and put plastic around them.

This next spring is expected to be even worse for planting than last spring, so let that guide you, people, in what you choose to do about food.

Remember that many will become hungry over the next year or two and more into the future, those that survive, and have plans to protect your crops in some way. Hungry people will believe they have a right to any food they find, and then will become irrational in their desperation.

I don't yet know what I will do for protection, that is if the Cascadia earthquake and tsunami do not take me out. Perhaps plant in the garage and open the garage door early in the morning when the sun first hits there, then lock it up again when the sun moves.

Just be thinking,people, how you will manage these things - and get going now, as Darth suggests. This isn't a lark, isn't a possibility. This is our new reality and we are blessed to know the facts well ahead of most of the nation. Take advantage of your head start and do the things.

In a lot of Asian countries, the hogs share a pond with ducks and wild birds come in to share the food. The wild birds spread diseases.

In the USA, a lot of advanced hog operations are INDOORS with birds excluded and carefully controlled environmental conditions.

I don't think the disease will hit us as hard.

Small farmers would do well to move their hogs indoors with no access for wild birds.

Yes, he sure does! I recommend going waaay back in his videos - how far depends on your interests. He has a segment on the Cascadia worry, and just about everything else a person might be concerned about.

Here is another I strongly recommend, though you will learn something you really, truly do not want to know. I recommend watching at least three of his videos, so that you understand one is not about an anomaly; that this goes on daily or nearly so.

Have tissues and a wastebasket nearby. Heartbreaking to know what is deliberately being done to our oceans and land, and absolutely reducing possibility of growing food, as well as fueling "wild" fires. Just almost too much to believe until you have watched several of his videos.
