Question — in a bug-out situation, is it feasible to use a hot water bottle as a portable canteen? How would I sterilise it first, if so?

I found this site that might help you with that~

I buy generic denture cleaning tablets.

Although hubs recently bought “quaternary tablets.” Stuff used to disinfect already cleaned. (He puts in a spray bottle to take camping.)

By the way, KTee, in reference to you talking with your crew of furkin about treats, I discuss everything with my girls - day's events, plans, how I'm feeling, everything. They are great listeners, always fascinated by the subject matter, and never tell my secrets. I talk to them all the time.

Are your cats good listeners? Sometimes they disdain human conversation, the pests, and make clear they have no interest in your petty concerns. They care only about that spot in the sunshine where they wish to lay, or whether you have stirred their food recently, and why that bird keeps teasing them through the window. No, I don't believe I ever had a great conversation with a cat.

How are pot-bellied pigs about conversing? I've never even been close to one much less become acquainted.

No, don't think I could advise that. Too much rubber entering the water as well as whatever other chemicals were used in the making of the rubber bottle.

Nice try, but no.

The REI site is showing how to clean hydration bladders, meaning articles made and intended to hold good drinking water, not hot water bottles, definitely not intended to hold drinking water.

I'm surprised this thread is so quiet right now. I would have thought it would be hopping with all kinds of comments and stories regarding the virus and preparations and all we are experiencing and heading toward.

No comments even on emptied stores? Does everyone here have everything? I'm thankful to be sheltering in place already. Have been for a week or so.

So many people are out desperately trying to find what they need, even for just a couple weeks - what a shame. They could so easily have had all that in their homes just by purchasing one or two extra things each week or month.

The only thing I do not have a lot of is hand sanitizer, but that's partly because I don't often use it and don't have a lot of faith in it. I wear gloves even to get the mail, and disinfect any mail I wish to keep. When I was still shopping, I did so in gloves, then used bleach wipes on every part of my vehicle I touched, and also on every item I purchased, then transferring to a clean bag, before bringing it in the house.

I hope all of you are doing well, have everything you need, and are already sheltering in place. Hope you will soon be posting here again.

Hey Hey~

I won't really have anything to report until the 23rd.
My current preps are good but from what I'm reading and hearing online it will never be enough.

There is soooo much news out there right now that it's hard to keep up with. By the time I write this.. another county, city or state will have declared some type of virus emergency.

I find I need to step out sometimes and take a deep breath and pray we make it thru this and to have the strength to resolve our minds into a new way of living and thinking,

I have been apprehensive on going out cause here in this household we are in "That dangerous category" If I go out and get it.. its a sure death sentence to my household and I can't handle that thought.

I'm taking the necessary precautions.. gloves, masks, booties hand sanitizers and what is needed to stay safe. Below is one of my favorite preppers to watch.

The war against an unseeable enemy is the worst case scenario that I can think of.

I hope everyone that is reading this is doing well and know that you are in my prayers~

Stay safe, stay strong, be vigilant.

It is a slow thread. Although I check here for new ideas on prepping or to share ideas. I really hope everyone already has what they need and are not out in it trying to buy preps for as cheap as they can.

So many on my fb feed are complaining that the stores are out of everything. I have one 2nd cousin that is pissed because she can't buy a certain brand of huggies diaper wipes. SO many posts on a free fb group asking for diapers, formula. I really feel for those families. Maybe money prevented them from stocking up. Or last month/ week the cheap store brand diaper worked just fine and this week you realize it's giving baby a rash so now you need name brand. I really feel for them but I can be very thankful that 1. daughter has used cloth for the gs since the beginning. 2. I stocked up on the everything else we need.

Anyway since it's a board on prepping for poor I have a great no sew cloth diaper tip.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Happy to see the new posts here.

This is not necessarily or not just prepping for the poor - I simply wanted to make certain the poor were included.

I've been sheltering in place ten days already, yet had an imperative medical appointment today in a larger city. Hated it, didn't want go, etc. Thankful to be home, mask and gloves tossed in the garbage, hoping for the best.

Freeway traffic was the lightest I've ever seen, and the trip was the fastest ever. Fewest people around that I have ever seen, as well. That is, until we passed Walmart - surprisingly the parking lot appeared just about as full as always.

Good to be home. Good to have preps and not have to go out in the misery. So many just now trying to buy what they should have been buying for years or at least months - what a shame. And then there are the overbuyers - stupid people. Just want to stay home and garden.

The Lord bless all of you and keep you well.

Now that most of us are prepped up & TS has HTF I think it might be wise to focus on security & stretching out your preps.

NO GRAZING...good time for a diet...make those preps last!

We don't know how long this storm will last.

Don't answer the door...nobody should be knocking on anybodies door right now anyway. (already been reports of people in uniform pretending to be gov't officials knocking on peoples doors).

You can nail a piece of wood into the floor just below the door knob...it makes a helluva door stop if the door gets kicked in. It'll give you extra seconds to grab your gun or wake you up.

Keep a broom against the front door so if it is opened...the broom will fall & make a loud BANG against the floor.

If you have an item or 2 you need...you don't need to expose yourself to a big grocery store or costco.

Bread or mustard? Hit a convenience store...in-out and y'r gone. They even have toilet paper. If they look busy...drive away & try again later.

Pop or tonic water with quinine? Try a liquor store at noon when nobody is there.

Aspirin or advil? One of those small drug stores should work.

Bleach? Try a hardware store.

Get home & wash your hands immediately.

Just back from the convenience store...only 1 other customer in the store. No bread but I got the mustard I wanted banana2

Then to the liquor store...I was the only customer in the place...the tonic water with quinine was low but I got 3 quarts and left 6 quarts for others.

Well done!! And good on you for not taking it all.

In reference to tonic water, there is a lot of talk about choloroquine possibly being a cure for covid-19. There are also stupid stories about it being tossed around

I want to share my experience, while stating clearly I have no medical training and your mileage may vary.

I've taken hydroxychloroquine for going on twenty years now, with no bad effects, because I have lupus and other AI diseases. I have to see my opthalmologist twice yearly for a thorough eye check because the medication CAN cause blindness. However, that is not a common side effect.

Make your own choice, if it is offered to you. Just know I am very thankful to have had it and thankful that I might be able to continue taking it thanks to the large stockpile in the US, rather than lose it because another country quits making it.

Please only go out if you are wearing mask and gloves - PLEASE!!! This virus has not really taken off yet - it is only beginning to get up steam. We are all at great risk so we need to protect ourselves in every way possible.

These are good ideas you offer, in places to find necessary items not in a huge monstrous store full of desperate people. Guns are being drawn in those stores, even, in fights over merchandise. Sad! Besides, the mom and pop type stores really need our business.

On the other hand, WHY ARE YOU NOT DONE and SHELTERING IN PLACE???? It's time to simply admit that anything you do not have you must do without or substitute. Please, people - I want every one of you to be alive and doing well a year from now!

All of this is terrific! Regarding not grazing - each of us must soon begin to appear thinner than we were lest we give away that we have prepped rather nicely for ourselves. If you have clothing that is too large for you, good. If not, it's diet time. Also, wear older, funky clothing - no jewelry, no lovely haircut or do, no coloring. We don't even need to look happy - better to look pitiful but be careful not to appear nor sound sick, lest someone turn you in and you be hauled off to a camp.

Security tips absolutely welcome and actually requested. Thank you for these!

Another - put three inch screws into your door hinges and locks, instead of the lil short things presently there. The long screws make breaking down the door basically impossible even for the swat team, I'm told.

I need advice on my sliding glass door. Can't cover it with plywood. I have one piece of wood I use in the center to block it from opening. No real money to invest in fancy locks and such. Suggestions?

I expected not to have marauders and such for about six months. Color me optimistic. The gubmint expects them in one to two weeks. This is scary for someone living alone. It's my worst fear, far greater than getting hungry or running out of bathroom tissue.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
One more thing in the security theme - people will be stealing food. Back east some have been followed home from CostCo and such, and what they purchased stolen from them. The disgusting jerks who have said they would not prep but would take ours are already active. Makes me sick to my stomach. Hope they try it on someone armed!

I hope you all understand by now that food will not be suddenly reappearing in stores before long in quality and quantity of the past. If not, please watch Ice Age Farmer. We must be growing our own, beginning immediately. Otherwise all we will have is our preps, and when they run out? Depend on the gubmint who comes to help? I think not! Also, we will badly need the nutrients from our freshly grown foods. If you do not already have your heirloom seeds, there are a lot still available on eBay. Only get non-gmo, heirloom seeds. Hybrid seeds cannot be saved from year to year.

We have to be growing our own, beginning TODAY!! And to make matters more complicated, we have to immediately prepare for security for our growing food! Those in groups can assign security teams to watch over your crops. Those like me - PFT - and I don't have in-ground soil to garden in, just buckets. Therefore, I have worked out a plan to grow in buckets inside my sliding glass door, which faces southwest. Lots of lovely sunshine, inside a [not very secure] door. My fruit trees and berry bushes are on the deck and cannot very well be moved.

Please be considering if there is a way you can grow at least part of yours indoors, under lights - shop lights from Walmart, under twenty dollars, are said to do very well for this.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough that we MUST GROW FOOD for ourselves, right now, because of the virus, because of the poor crop yields all over the world last season which is expected to be at least as bad this year, and because we are now in a mini-ice age, with colder temps, more rain and snow, harsher conditions, and again no major commercial crops. Get to growing, people!!!!

Yup...but don't forget abundant free food like CATTAILS! All the carbs you'll ever need!

Bring a pillow case & an extra pair of shoes that are gonna get wet...sloosh out in the swamp & start pulling up cattails...peel the outer skin off the stalk & the inside is alot like a potato.

Fill your pillow case, change into dry shoes & walk home.

You can eat them raw, boil them, fry them, bake them, or dry & grind into flour.

Been thinking about your sliding glass door Pooka.

Since you have a piece of wood in the track, there is no way to open it without breaking the glass...which you will hear.

There are things like a board with nails going thru it for the thief(s) to step on...or a trip wire that will literally trip them...but you probably don't want to do that.

My only suggestion is to come out shooting. You can ask them why they broke in AFTER they are dead!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
OP or mods, if you don't think this post belongs in this thread, feel free to delete, it is not my intention to derail. I only post this to try and help others stay safe.
I posted this in the main Covid thread:

Good morning everyone! Just dropping in to pass along a few ideas to improve your homes physical security for relatively little money. As this situation drags on and people slide further into desperation, they will resort to attacking neighbors in order to take what you either have or they think you have. Keeping a low profile and not advertising that you have preps is the most basic and free security there is.

Mount bar holders to the wall studs on either side of your doors, use 3" wood screws to mount them into place. Cut a 2x4 to the correct length and block your door from the inside. You can mount one either immediately over or under the door knob and it will greatly enhance the strength of the door. If you want even more security, mount one a few inches above the door knob and another a few inches below. Back in my door kicking days, simple fortifications like this made it nearly impossible to force entry through the door with only the use of a boot or ram, we typically had to resort to shotgun or explosive breaching in order to defeat the fortifications. Product links below:

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

Its best to keep would be assailants away from your home in the first place, most criminals are averse to light and will move on to targets that give them greater opportunity to conceal themselves in the shadows. These solar lights are bright and will light up an area at least 30 (10 meters) from your house, or wherever you have it mounted. This particular light has a long cord from the solar panel to the light so they can both be mounted in optimal locations:

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

Final tip for the day, couple these driveway motion detectors with the lights shown above and they will give you an idea of when someone may be lurking around your home. The drawback is that all the sensors and receivers work on the same frequency, so you have to have them mounted in a manner so that the sensor for the front door doesn't activate the receiver for the side of the house (I hope that makes sense):

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

The prices for the above options range from less than $10 US to roughly $25 US.

One remaining idea is to mount chicken wire or something a bit heavier gauge over your windows. This will minimize the chance of thrown objects breaking the glass and will slow down any attempt to enter through a window. The drawback is you really should mount this in a manner that it can be easily taken down from the inside should there be a fire in your home. Don't fortify your house so well that you cant get out in a hurry if needed.

The best any of us can do is make our homes a "harder" target. By doing so, those with ill intent will move on to an easier target. However, if they don't, having these measures in place can greatly increase your situational awareness, decrease your reaction time and allow you take take whatever measures are appropriate to defend your home and those inside or allow you time to escape unnoticed.

Also, as Larry Croc added to my post in the other thread, make sure there are no hedges, bushes or other areas near your home that person can conceal themselves in.

Be safe!

If you can somehow place chicken wire on the inside of the glass of the sliding glass doors, that will allow the sunlight in and slow down any thieves. If the frame around the glass is wood, it should be easy to use staples or screws to fix the wire into place. It wont be very aesthetic, but if you're worried about security that shouldn't matter too much.
The best you can do is slow them down long enough that you can confront them and scare them away or use whatever force is necessary at the time to protect your life.

Thank you for starting this thread and thanks to all who answered my odd water bottle question!

Here’s another odd one:

I’m growing sprouts on my window sill — can I pickle them? I have a pickle jar that I’d like to top up. I don’t see why I couldn’t pickle leftover sprouts if I cannot eat them all.

I think health wise you'd be OK...but I'm pretty sure you would end up with pickled slime.

Cuc's are a very firm veggie (just like carrots)...I think you'll end up with something that has the consistency of a pickled banana.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I have a bad feeling! Things are going to get ALOT worse real soon.

This is not based on any info...just a feeling.

Like we're about to be locked down for a month (no grocery or medicine runs of any kind). Either we get ordered to solidly lock down or maybe things will get so bad we just wont want to risk leaving the house.

Boy I hope I am wrong!
