Take the time now to observe your preps. Are they holding out or vanishing right before your very eyes?

I always knew that comfort foods would help you keep positive...but I had no idea how much!

I was done prep shopping & decided to make one last run for junk (candy, cookies, carmel corn, cheetos, brownie mix, etc)...and WOW has that kept me happy!

And I haven't even eaten much of it...just knowing it's here gives me comfort :D

I haven't been to a store in more than 3 weeks (except that 1 time for mustard) and my stash is still sitting pretty! banana2

I can't find mustard online. The last time I went out 3 stores were out of mustard and only one store had mayonnaise. I haven't gone out in 3 weeks.

My preps were doing ok. I did get an Easter bunny for everyone delivered. We're getting low on flour and yeast. We've been low carb or extremely low carb for so long that flour and yeast weren't on my radar. I only had 20#. I did get 10 more pounds delivered and ordered distillers yeast thru amazon prime. The distillers yeast is working. Takes a little longer to proof or rise.

The son in law is making a run to Costco today. Maybe he can find Mustard.

I have a bottle of mustard I could sell you for the low low price of 10 grand lmao

You're doing well...take notes so you can refine your prepping at a later date. When this is all over we'll need to replenish our stock piles.

I have a stash of crackers to replace bread...but I've noticed they are going ALOT faster than I thought they would.

I got that mustard at a convenience store/gas station...give it a try...but don't go in if there are too many customers.

Drive away & try again some other day.

If you have an item or 2 you need...you don't need to expose yourself to a big grocery store or costco.

Bread or mustard? Hit a convenience store...in-out and y'r gone. They even have toilet paper. If they look busy...drive away & try again later.

Pop or tonic water with quinine? Try a liquor store at noon when nobody is there.

Aspirin or advil? One of those small drug stores should work.

Bleach? Try a hardware store.

Get home & wash your hands immediately.

Good tips.

My last trip out was to small mom and pop stores. I'd rather pay more and not need to be in a store with hundreds of others.

The hubby ran out of beer. ARGH!!!!! I told him to buy enough for 30 days. I told him he couldn't go out again even if he ran out but our governor extended our quarantine by another 3 weeks so I caved and let him go out. Since I had ran out of soda on day 2 (intentionally) I asked for a 20oz bottle. That stuff tasted better than champagne. Anyway I made him go to the gas station for the beer and not a grocery store.

He also came home, showered and changed clothes right away while the rest of us disinfected the beer, soda, chips.

I need advice on my sliding glass door. Can't cover it with plywood. I have one piece of wood I use in the center to block it from opening. No real money to invest in fancy locks and such. Suggestions?

I did use rigid insulation to control heat and cold. One panel cut to size inside on the section that doesn't move. One panel cut to size on the outside on the section that does move. Plywood could work also I guess, but it can also be removed on the outside.

Funny story I did the same in the bedroom. First layer was the blinds, then rigid insulation, then heavy material tacked up. I started smelly something burning. Like wiring or plastic. The sun was so intense even tho it was 10* out side it burnt the blinds.

It looks like frugal preppers are having to be more resourceful. Fewer food sales means higher food bills. No rummage sales or library book sales. Hamfests are shut down.

The only good thing so far is lower gasoline prices. I've put away 10 gallons so far. In gas cans that I bought at past rummages in preparation for this.

What I have been able to do is focus on little projects that I've just been putting off. Rebuilding the power cord for my Kenwood TR-7850 using wire scraps, freshening my digital preps by downloading the Debian distribution (internet provider has waived any caps :)

So what's going on with everyone else?

I cannot emphasize strongly enough that we MUST GROW FOOD for ourselves,

-----------------------

Yup...but don't forget abundant free food like CATTAILS! All the carbs you'll ever need!

Bring a pillow case & an extra pair of shoes that are gonna get wet...sloosh out in the swamp & start pulling up cattails...peel the outer skin off the stalk & the inside is alot like a potato.

Fill your pillow case, change into dry shoes & walk home.

You can eat them raw, boil them, fry them, bake them, or dry & grind into flour.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
OP or mods, if you don't think this post belongs in this thread, feel free to delete, it is not my intention to derail. I only post this to try and help others stay safe.
I posted this in the main Covid thread:

Good morning everyone! Just dropping in to pass along a few ideas to improve your homes physical security for relatively little money. As this situation drags on and people slide further into desperation, they will resort to attacking neighbors in order to take what you either have or they think you have. Keeping a low profile and not advertising that you have preps is the most basic and free security there is.

Mount bar holders to the wall studs on either side of your doors, use 3" wood screws to mount them into place. Cut a 2x4 to the correct length and block your door from the inside. You can mount one either immediately over or under the door knob and it will greatly enhance the strength of the door. If you want even more security, mount one a few inches above the door knob and another a few inches below. Back in my door kicking days, simple fortifications like this made it nearly impossible to force entry through the door with only the use of a boot or ram, we typically had to resort to shotgun or explosive breaching in order to defeat the fortifications. Product links below:

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

Its best to keep would be assailants away from your home in the first place, most criminals are averse to light and will move on to targets that give them greater opportunity to conceal themselves in the shadows. These solar lights are bright and will light up an area at least 30 (10 meters) from your house, or wherever you have it mounted. This particular light has a long cord from the solar panel to the light so they can both be mounted in optimal locations:

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

Final tip for the day, couple these driveway motion detectors with the lights shown above and they will give you an idea of when someone may be lurking around your home. The drawback is that all the sensors and receivers work on the same frequency, so you have to have them mounted in a manner so that the sensor for the front door doesn't activate the receiver for the side of the house (I hope that makes sense):

[link to www.ruralking.com (secure)]

The prices for the above options range from less than $10 US to roughly $25 US.

One remaining idea is to mount chicken wire or something a bit heavier gauge over your windows. This will minimize the chance of thrown objects breaking the glass and will slow down any attempt to enter through a window. The drawback is you really should mount this in a manner that it can be easily taken down from the inside should there be a fire in your home. Don't fortify your house so well that you cant get out in a hurry if needed.

The best any of us can do is make our homes a "harder" target. By doing so, those with ill intent will move on to an easier target. However, if they don't, having these measures in place can greatly increase your situational awareness, decrease your reaction time and allow you take take whatever measures are appropriate to defend your home and those inside or allow you time to escape unnoticed.

Also, as Larry Croc added to my post in the other thread, make sure there are no hedges, bushes or other areas near your home that person can conceal themselves in.

Be safe!

I have a bad feeling! Things are going to get ALOT worse real soon.

This is not based on any info...just a feeling.

Like we're about to be locked down for a month (no grocery or medicine runs of any kind). Either we get ordered to solidly lock down or maybe things will get so bad we just wont want to risk leaving the house.

Boy I hope I am wrong!
 Quoting: Mental Case

You were correct in both instances, unfortunately. Most of us are still locked down while politicians haggle medical determinations of what is wisest for the people's health. I had a telephone consult with my rheumatologist who really wants me to visit her office ASAP. She stated that things are beginning to open up, to whichI responded that I would be using my own common sense about medical decisions, rather than orders by a politician concerned about re-election or future higher office.

Because it is likely this weaponized virus will be with us for some years to come, we will be risking our health on a regular basis. Of course after a year or so they will want to shove an injection into us for prevention. Haven't heard from anyone yet who would trust that vaccination. Most of us would become weary of having to shelter in place quite quickly and choose to jump right out there in public, yet I believe that would be a great mistake. People with businesses and about to lose them - what are they to do? If there is anything left of the business, they will have to go out and try to save them. Most people cannot eat or feed their families without working, so they will have to go back to work.

Prayer is the most powerful force on earth.

Just making the MOST OF EVERYTHING is important as well.

I only use organic potatoes & peel them with a paring knife. Thus lots of potato still attached to skin. Normally just throw it away.

So a few days ago, I put the peels in water in refrigerator.

Today, strained water out & spun in salad spinner. Dried with paper towels as well.

Put in plastic ziplock bag with a tablespoon or two of avocado oil(Highest smoke point, 520degrees).

Emptied on parchment paper on broiler pan. Salted & peppered.

Baked in 420 degree preheated oven for about 22 minutes.

They puff up and are crispy. OMG, the best.

I also use organic chicken skins cut up in strips and fried up, sometimes with onions. Then add to sandwiches. I call these gribbons. They are also called gribenes.

Waste not, want not.

ORGANIC apple peels, roasted, have not had great success. I like them coated in butter with salt & Ceylon cinnamon roasted at 400 degrees for 20 minutes but watch them, they burn easily. Mind you my peels are thick as I do not use a peeler but a paring knife.

SNACKING that fills bellies is simple popcorn. A good combo for adults is TRUFFLE OIL, BLACK PEPPER & SALT.

Stock up on sweets from Easter. They can be used to flavor simple oatmeal. Chocolate in cooked oatmeal is like a dessert.

Other sweets if one has growing children is pop tarts and granola bars. Stash them away in old covered cookie tins with boxes removed. Plus pop tarts last beyond their date, like about 2 years stored in cool dark location with individual wrappings intact.

Also dehydrator to preserve excess seasonal food. Could use the oven set at 170 to 200 degrees. Or could even use a hot car interior in the summer.

Wonderful suggestions and recommendations! SO glad you are here!

Truffle oil - never have tasted, but would love to. Is it not very expensive? Is it garlic-y? Never thought of using garlic flavor, such as the salt, on pop corn, but ah luvs me sum garlic!

Thank you again.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Okay, people, there's good news and bad news. You can't answer fast enough to tell me which you want first. LOLZ

Actually, the good and bad are the same piece of information.

MSM today finally is telling MSP [main stream people] that we are going to have food shortages. That's great for MSP as they need the warning. Not so great for us, those of us not yet done prepping, and is there ever a "done"? If so I haven't hit it. Yes, I could manage. No, there are more things I'd like to have.

Since we are almost to the first of the month, when shopping is rampant, I recommend those of us already ahead of the power curve get at the shopping in the next three days. I don't mean to take anything away from "them", but we actually were there first, and we know what to purchase - unlike many of them who will need to stock up on frozen pizzas, hot pockets, and chips.

Just go top off whatever you need to top off. And then remember that tucking a treat here and there among your "sensible" food items is a good idea to avoid taste boredom, to lift your spirit, to recollect what life used to be like and probably will never be again.

If your pets are accustomed to having treats, please purchase those as well. They will not understand the situation as we will, and to do without is not fair to them. I have this and that tucked away among my things, so that they will have surprises as well as normal treats fairly often. They deserve them, you know? They are our best friends, companions, watch cats and watch dogs, feet warmers, all kinds of things.

A personal pet note - if you have female dogs, stock up on weewee pads - can be gotten for about $40 per case of 300 on eBay. If the time comes when it is unsafe to let our dogs out, that's the solution for female dogs and male puppies. For adult males, I don't know - tack plastic on the wall above the weewee pad? Male dog owners will know best. I always choose female so that they will use either outside or the pads, as my health means I cannot always go outside.

Please don't let your pets out alone. You won't know who is out there wanting to rid you of your pets either to silence them or to eat them. Sorry - had to be said.
