Man is this turning into a GREAT growing season banana2

The garlic is garlicing...the tomatoes are tomatoing...the hops are hopping...even my monster hedge that blocks out the world has turned into godzilla!

I've had to cut the chives twice now & let them go to waste because I didn't need them (and another cut because I did need them). Already harvested about $20 worth of top quality cilantro & put it in the freezer.

Kudos!! That is such good news. Soo glad you have the knack to grow and produce what you need.

Me on the other hand is going to have to get professional help. Never had any luck growing anything at all.

Thanks...there are certain things I grow well & other things I suck at...and lastly...things the critters eat so fast it's not even worth it to try to grow.

I've given up on sunflowers because the bunnies & squirrels eat the shoots the minute they sprout.

I can see where the rodents/rabbits could be a big PITA. Do you have room for a greenhouse.. maybe at least to get sprouts started?

I probably could do a greenhouse...but it'd be a bigger pain than fencing in the garden...and that would be a big pain!

Eat cheap guy. So I bought all this brown rice which is good. And bought a can of roast beef hash by mistake and I'm thinking its not as good as corned beef hash. Then I got the idea to combine it with rice. And I'm hooked, its delicious. Brown rice is great filler and easy to cook. Just make sure you put lots of butter on it.

Thank you, lovely KTee. People seem to be finally understanding that prepping is for all of us, in a big hurry, judging by some of the front page threads. I'm thankful we have been working so long on this thread, that it contains so incredibly much information, and that our core group here has had so long to be prepping. We were purchasing items long before there was a shortage in anything, and we have some things that won't be available to anyone now and in the foreseeable future.

Many still don't understand the mini-ice age which we have entered, and how cold and wet and miserable we are going to be, how little food can be grown in those conditions. At least if they are prepping because of covid, or because of political unrest, or because of antifa/BLM, or because of any of the other reasons to prep right now, they will at least be partially covered for the cold to come.

Newcomers to this thread, we encourage you to read from the beginning, as we have accumulated mass amounts of information and advice. We further encourage you to read fast! Items are disappearing from shelves constantly and now even from thrift shops, which have been great resources in the past for many items we will require, such as wool blankets and clothing, copper pots and pans, all manner of useful thing.

Do the best you can, people, as quickly as you can, to preserve as much normalcy as you can for all the unfortunate events currently and to come. Don't let your loved ones go hungry because you just "didn't get it".

Sounds delicious! Glad you accidentally found something that satisfies you delightfully!

A caution here - brown rice does not store long-term, because of the oil in it. White rice is for storage, for future reference so to speak. Please don't plan on brown rice as part of your long-term storage - not even for a year from now. Same with whole wheat flour - won't store.

To store butter long-term, make ghee. Lots of youtube videos on how to do it.

KTee, sure wish I could come help you garden - it's so easy! Would love to get your garden going for you. Meanwhile, please look into Kratky hydroponics. Anybody can do this. Just get your supplies quickly while they are still available. You may well be ahead of the power curve by doing so, as having your "garden" growing indoors adds a terrific layer of security from the hordes who did not prepare and are roaming everywhere seeking food in other people's gardens. They will eat their fill and trash the rest. What we have indoors we are better able to protect.

I don't recall which state you are in, Ktee, but no doubt we are too far apart for me to be able to visit and help you get into growing produce. Sorry that is so. Please get seeds for sprouting - lots and lots of them - so that you can have fresh foods daily even though gardening isn't working for you and to be eaten along with the Kratky-grown produce.

Thinking of you and wishing you the very best in preps!

By the way, purchase all you can of heirloom seeds, even though you may not grow them at this time. They will have incredible barter value, and you may work out something whereby somebody else grows the veggies from your seeds and you profit by what you get to eat.

I slow cooked a beef roast at about 200 degrees (covered)...when it had an hour to go I added a cup of white rice.

The rice soaked up all the fat & cooked very well...but I really didn't want to eat rice that was that fattening (I had 2 spoonsfull).

I decided to put that fatty rice in baggies & freeze it...it should be great in a soup!

I've posted on this thread before, but here's a recap for new visitors:

Four essentials for basic survival:
Water
Food
Shelter
Security

Usually in that order, but not always. Your environment will make that determination for you.

Everything else beyond those four items is a luxury. Don't focus so hard on what you wish you had that you become incapable of utilizing what you do have to its fullest potential.

Your preps, whether you have 72 hours or 72 days, are not designed to keep you alive indefinitely. They are to give you some time and breathing room to make plans and find other sources of what you need. Don't run your preps down to zero and then decide to go foraging for supplies. You need food and water in order to have the energy to find more food and water.

Attitude is everything. Those who have the mindset to survive, will. Those who do not, won't. It really is that simple.

If there is no food to be found, insects contain some of the highest levels of protein ounce for ounce. The trick to eating insects to survive? Don't chew. Swallow whole like a vitamin pill.

If there is no water to be found, your own urine is 95% water and is sterile. So it can be recycled directly if necessary, but not indefinitely. It will eventually become undrinkable after a few rounds and kill you. Better to distill urine to filter out that other 5% if you can. However, in a life-or-death situation, direct recycling might buy you an extra couple of days to find fresh water.

Understand your surroundings and how to use them to your advantage. If you are in an extremely hot environment, for example, it's best to shelter during the day and move around at night.

Whatever you do, don't panic. If you make a decision in panic mode, it will most likely be fatal. Be prepared to make hard choices and do not allow emotion to cloud the decision making process. I won't give you examples; you'll know when it happens.

Good luck, everyone.

As I mentioned previously I will need professional help in gardening for my talents lie elsewhere with what God bestowed upon me and planting isn't one of them. Your generous offer to come help us here would be received warmly however we are in Florida and the distance is too great. Thank you~

I have the desire do it(hydroponics) but lack the room needed .. especially in this small house that is filling up with prepping supplies very fast.

The yard is quite large but it looks like we could make a Husquana commercial out of it due to it being very overgrown.
Family at this time is not able to come help beat back the wilds for obvious reasons of the times.

If I could talk my hubby into moving to a safer area I would but he is sentimental about this land and will not under any circumstances leave it. As much as I understand the sentiment I know we will run into very frosty times if the current state of affairs continues at full steam ahead. We have protection among our preps but what can 3 peeps do against (fireworks)of any kind?

I promise tho that I will add as much seed/soil to my preps as possible for maybe if SHTF in a big way God will give me the help I need in completing the task~

Will try to pin this thread again on Monday and see if we can't get more on board.

Blessings to all~

Great idea! I think many people forget that we will require fats in our post-HTF diets to survive. Your fatty rice might turn out to be a life-saver!

For those not aware of the body's need for essential fatty acids, please purchase and store quantities of "good" fats - olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, etc. Part of the reason, I believe, in reducing all protein availability has been to reduce access to fats, as well. Very dangerous business. Please acquire and store these things. I store the oils in my freezer as they do not seem to deteriorate at all that way.

One more thing - if you have oil that turns rancid eventually, DO NOT DISCARD. Use that oil as moisturizer for hands and feet, for animals, and to burn as "candles" for light.

Remember that everything will have a use, as long as we don't discard it.

WA state and Florida are about as far apart as is possible to be in the conus, and I would probably not hurry to be in the midst of hurricane country, timid about it as I am!

If you check out Kratky method on YT, you will find you would only need a space to place one bucket - which can often be gotten for free or a nominal sum - I get mine - or used to - from the Walmart bake shop. A place for that bucket in good light and you are golden. Grow away. Because you are in such a warm climate, you could grow by this method outside. Set buckets on stumps, patches of ground, wherever. One bucket equals one plant which goes on producing. Grow anything you enjoy, from lettuce to cucumbers to kale to tomatoes to all sorts of greens and everything in between. This guarantees you healthy food to go with your preps, extending them exponentially as well as increasing your survival energy and life expectancy.

In case I sound besotted over the Kratky method, I frankly am. It is miraculous in my view to have discovered this, as I am incompetent at wiring, connecting plumbing, and everything that is required for ordinary hydronics. I'd long been interested in the subject, but knew it was not for me to accomplish. Then finding Kratky - whoaa!!! Miracle of miracles! Hoping everyone here will have a look and give it a try. Could save some lives - perhaps even your own!

KTee, so sorry we cannot meet over your garden - perhaps some day we can meet another way. We can hope. You have become a dear friend here, highly valued and greatly appreciated.

Good to see you again, Riff-Raff! Hang around, learn more, teach more!

People do need to be well-prepped by now, as some things are no longer available and the rest are becoming more and more expensive by the day. Nevertheless, if you are new to prepping, start right now - read from front to back on this thread very quickly, making lists as you go. Wear gloves and mask and go shopping, quickly. Mark off your list as you purchase something, then go back to reading and adding to the lists.

Many advise one gallon of water per day. They are not thinking. Store a minimum of four gallons water per day per person. Even at that amount, you will wish you had more.

Stock methods of water purification - do this first thing. Water is the most crucial need you will have. Be ready to purify it, haul it, save it, collect it, do whatever you must do to have a constant supply of water. Do whatever you must to have a constant means of purifying that water.

Don't forget to stock food and supplies for pets and any other living creatures for which you are responsible. Have food for them for the same length of time as yourself.

Read quickly, shop quickly, store quickly.

Riff-Raff, good to see you - don't be a stranger!

KTee (and others)since you mentioned "fireworks" I want to bring up again fire extinguishers. Crucial to have several of these.

The current group of trouble-makers have threatened to create house fires to establish their presence and purpose - need fire extinguishers.

Further, it is known that the extremely large, professional-type fireworks have been purchased in multiple truckloads by those intending to be setting them off frequently, ostensibly to make normal citizens so accustomed to the sounds that they will believe as they continue hearing large booms, these are only fireworks, thus hiding the fact that the hard actions have begun by fireworks of a different kind, the kind that will cause death very quickly.

I recommend we all cause a run on fire extinguishers - not to take from others - we surely will leave a plenty for everyone, but to be certain we have enough of our own.

General thinking among the prepper community has gone from the foolish idea of "bugging out" with nowhere to go to remaining in place, the wisest idea. Fire extinguishers will be a large help in assisting to do exactly that - remain where we are - and safely.

Excellent to have a referral to a seed company from someone we know so well as you, Lance, and know your own astuteness regarding growing things. Thank you for this.

Glad you can still deal with him despite his non-dealing with Canada at this time. Wonder why he won't.

My favorite thing? On his front page he states unequivocally that he carries NO GMO seeds - I just hate finding I've gone to a webpage thinking it is only heirloom seeds, only to discover they are also selling that which is worse than useless.

Thank you, Lance. You are always a joy and I love your posts, even the few I disagree with! Hope all is going well with you in your new life.

By the way, KTee, having three of you to fend off marauders is far better than the number I have here - which is one. Me. LOL Well, actually, me and however many angels God chooses to send to help. I pray and expect things like someone coming toward a door to do harm suddenly and inexplicably flies feet up, landing hard and breaking a leg. Oops - marauding plan permanently disrupted. Things like that. God is still in the miracle business, you know.

Except in the worst times, one of you can be sleeping while two of you are on watch - perfect! You might be able to develop more of a group - there are a few good sources online.

I want to recommend to everyone here Bear Independent on both YouTube and Patreon. The best is on Patreon, of course, and I would not consider missing either one. You can learn anything and everything from him having to do with food storage, prepping, security, communications, livestock, gardening, MAGs and tribes, everything. There's even a forum for members, and I know for a fact there are people near you, KTee, looking for more people.

Check out Bear Independent, people. You will be SOOOO glad you did! Be sure to mention that I invited you, please.

[Edited to add that any lamebrains joining the yt of Bear will also find themselves flying quickly - stupidity unwelcome and not tolerated.]

One thing on the gallon of water per person per day; that includes cleaning, cooking, and wipe-down bathing. Remember that water is extremely heavy and takes up a lot of space. 1 gallon weighs 8 pounds, so you have to be practical about storing water. Filtration, bleach, boiling, distilling, and water purification tablets are going to be your primary methods of purifying new water coming in. It's best to know about all of those methods and have them all available to you if possible. Also, a LifeStraw will be the best $20 you ever spend that will allow you to safely drink water from just about any source. This is a must-have for any bugout bag and general preps.

Those of you on a well system, look into methods of operating your well pump without electrical power. I have a kill switch that disconnects the pump from the mains and draws power from a line run to our generator. Installing a hand pump is another method if your well isn't too deep.

Growing garlic is easy...but getting the bulb to form under ground is the hard part.

I can't tell you how many garlic plants I've harvested with no bulb of garlic at the bottom.

Welp, today I tried something new...each plant is growing a seed head on top...I cut the seed head off 12 plants...then I have another 30 or so that I left the seed head grow.

I'll be able to directly compare the ones I cut & the ones I didn't when I harvest them (probably in about 2 weeks).

I'll letchya know.

People went beyond the basics here a couple years ago or so here, but it's nice to see your "name" and that you are still interested in prepping. I would encourage you to read the last hundred pages or so and see what all we have come up with - a great deal, definitely.

Thank you for reminding everyone of the requirement for people with their own wells to find or manufacture a way or three to get water from those wells in case of a grid down situation, which even FEMA says is likely. Water is crucial - you might survive for a while chewing leaves, but without water - not happening.

Have to completely disagree with you about the "Life Straw", Riff-Raff. That's what I used to think, as well, until I was educated by the best prepper I've had the privilege to meet, a fellow of life-long experience and remarkable wisdom who shared so generously that I feel I knew nothing at all about prepping until meeting him. We spent roughly six months, hours per day every day, with him teaching me and me occasionally knowing a little something to enhance his preps.

From here the word "you" is the editorial "you", not intending to indicate any one person. "You" in this case means anyone reading here, anyone who hopes to survive what our world has fallen to being. Best wishes to YOU.

Back to purification straws - please read carefully side by side the advertisements and explanations of Life Straw and Sawyer's Mini. Check out the price difference first, then read all the facts. You will immediately see why Life Straws will do little for you compared to Sawyer Minis. Save yourself a lot of money and buy the right thing. Do I make money from saying this? LOL Don't I just wish!!!

One gallon of water is nearly enough for one person, for drinking only, while doing the hard work needed when we are in the deep stuff and working on surviving. It will not soak or cook beans or rice, thoroughly wash your hands several times, which you MUST do to prevent infections of even tiny cuts or scratches, or wee little blisters, much less your face, hair, body, clothing, dishes, countertops, or clean the bathroom after you've made a mess washing yourself in there. Later you might want to wash your dishes - with what? Need a drink? Drink what?

Four gallons water per day per person minimum.

Yes, very heavy - so who is going to charge off into the woods carrying one gallon, much less more? No, doesn't work that way. First of all, if you are headed to the woods hoping to find a place to survive - you are dumb, guilty of extremely poor planning, and will be very lucky to be alive in five to seven days!

In addition to Sawyer minis, have tablets to purify water, pool shock to purify water, a container to boil water to purify water. A lot of the above. How long do you plan on surviving? That much.

I encourage everybody to start at the beginning of this thread and educate yourself so that you may very well survive what is coming!! To try something you've always read about in years past is a large mistake. You will NOT survive if you think you are going to take a bug-out bag to the woods and make it there. SO many reasons why - just read the thread and see. Most of us posting here are extremely careful and thoughtful people, wanting to give the best advice possible, never suggesting something that could harm a person in desperate need. We want only the best for you, and want to help you survive.

We ask that you decide for yourself what you must do, what is wisest and safest for you - don't take solely our word for anything - research, talk to your doctor, your pharmacist, a kitchen expert, a nutritionist, anybody who represents expertise in something you are considering doing. Or use your own experiences and wisdom to determine what you know to be good for you.

Take on new knowledge you find here, and research it further. Just one small example - are you aware that wildlife has been poisoned with the wasting disease to make it inedible to humans? And here you thought you were hightailing for it the woods, going to survive on deer and elk and moose - right? Wrong. There is a great deal of bad news out there for those who think they can survive on their own in the woods - start reading, my friends, and see what you learn.

If you still want to try it after reading this thread, by all means do what you think best. Use the thread for all the other information and ideas.

We also encourage you to teach, people. This is again the editorial "you". Everybody knows something, and we want to know what you know at least as much as we want to share with you what we know! Whatever your area of expertise, do teach us!

If you have just found this thread and are excited about it, if you have sufficient green karma to pin it for others to find and become excited by, please do. We are so close to needing this information that there just isn't much time left. Let's alert and inform as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

Very interesting! I have grown garlic, with bulbs, and I have grown garlic, that was only the greens. However, I cannot account for either situation, because I was growing garlic with rosebushes - supposed to keep various problems away from roses. I remember some years having bulbs, and other times just greens, but don't recall when or way and I know I had no idea at the time - just looked at them, said "Hmm" and kept on going to the next task.

Do explain to us what you learn. Our resident master gardener, and I do not mean one limited to only what a normal master gardener knows, may be able to educate us. Lance, are you present today?

For those wishing to take action to turn around what is happening to our nation, see if you can find anything, something, on "Waking the Giant". It's happening July 4th, if you start it in your own town.

We, the People, are the GIANT, you know, and it's time we wake up and make our voices and our numbers heard - let them count how many of us are gathered to carry this message.

Hey all~

This will be the last time I'm able to pin this until I get more Karma under my belt.

So for those joining us for the first time please take the time to pin this to favorites and peruse this thread and d/l or printout what you find useful. For those of us that have been using this thread regularly please continue to add to the helpful tips.

We are really trying to get peeps to get prepared for as mentioned in this thread. Times have gotten really challenging and from the looks of it, it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. And if it all calms down you did nothing but add to your supplies for the future.

My addition to this thread right now is to look into getting a slew of camping supplies from a tent to pot belly stove.
Might not have to bug out so to speak which is not one of the best ideas anyway however if something were to happen to my homestead I would at least have shelter and a way to survive the elements.
Additional hint :Keep these supplies away from your main home if possible for if something does happen to your home all supplies will be lost.

Enjoy the thread and please don't hesitate to add for others to learn by.~

Much Love from one prepper to another.

Historically speaking...waking the giant is a vicious, violent, bloody, ugly thing! Americans tend to exterminate the problem with extreme prejudice...then get on with their lives.

Unfortunately...I think it's a necessity now...Their violence has gone too far :(

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
just wanted to thank everyone for all the great ideas.

Our family have been gardeners for as far back as we can trace. From sharecroppers to landbarons and everything in between. My parents and my generation have been growing ornamentals for the past 40 years. Very profitable.

This year we started early indoors and have dedicated a half acre to FOOD. Will put up another greenhouse next week to prep for winter crop. We just started our second grow and it looks great. May get three crops of corn this year. Fantastic growing year.

Please if at all possible at least attempt growing some greens in containers. You will be surprised at how fast you can sprout and grow microgreens and start over in same container. The kids love to help and even my severely disabled daughter has a ball helping plant seeds and watering chores. Seeing pride in her eyes is a great bonus as well.

I have noticed that foliar feeding is producing incredible results this year. Can literally watch the veggies grow in front of your eyes. Not sure if it's the weather/climate or the new fish emulsion and goat poo tea I am trying this year.

Here is a hint. One of our aquarium filters went out a few months ago. Didn't have funds to replace at time so had to clean tank twice weekly. This gives me 180gals of plant water with natural fertilizer a week and all the plants love it. Lot of work and luckily we have 3 wells here so aquarium water is plentiful.

Good luck and God bless to all.

What is foliar feeding?

Is that spraying the leaves as well as the soil?

With foliar feeding, as it is known, the nutrients are absorbed directly through the leaves of the plant. They work their way down the roots, but they also stimulate activity in the leaves, which in turn stimulates root development, because the plant starts to demand more water. Applying foliar fertilizer can increase uptake of nutrients from the soil by encouraging plants to take up more water, in addition to providing immediate benefits for a plant which may be suffering from deficiency.

A foliar fertilizer is not designed as an alternative to soil fertilizer and soil conditioning, but rather as a supplement which will increase efficiency and improve plant health. Uptake of nutrients from the soil can be very inefficient, and it can take several days for noticeable effects to occur. Foliar fertilizers act more quickly, and far more efficiently, as most of the fertilizer ends up in the plant, rather than in the soil.
The dead are just the undead waiting to happen.
