Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Thank you Pooka for the shoutout for more Karma. Having dedicated time and love for this thread you are appreciated and loved for starting it. If more peeps could see how this can help them in the times around the corner then we can have more survivors global-wide.

Everybody saw today and yesterday the news that covid-19 is likely airborne? Unpopular news, I know.

My thoughts on this is that it has been airborne since it hit.All the stories I read out of China pointed to this and then the cruise ships just confirmed it, IMO. Airborne is & will truly be a nightmare.

Curious why almost nobody wears gloves.
I'm also seeing here no one wears gloves either. Won't leave the house with out at least 3 pair in my purse. Another thing I have started doing is to always wear gloves while preparing meals for family and change them often. Not sure if raw food is a carrier of this and I have read about how to care for food you bring into the house from the grocery.Fruits ,vegtables potatoes all get washed and dried. I normally buy hamburger in bulk and when I'm repackaging it for freezer I always wear gloves. If I'm making meatloaf and having to get my hands in it to mix it..same deal. And as far as cooking meat rare anymore is a no go here.. Well cooked. I miss my rare steaks however not taking any chances anymore (for now).

Grocery:
Here in my neck of the woods is pretty plentiful on most things.. some items like ceareal foods and canned fruit is limited. What I haven't been able to find for awhile now is Ramen Noodles,Sardines and canned Chicken and Dumplings. I was able to order 6 cans online 4 weeks ago and now they are out of stock. Instant rice another thing on my list.. nope. Side note :will not order from Amazon if I can help it.Haven't used them yet and don't see myself doing so in the near future.

Vitamins :
A couple of weeks ago there was no stock of the vitals.
This week tho I was able to pick up C, D3, Garlic and Centrum MultiGummies (Men and Women) Still no alcohol. Using mouthwash after I come home from being outside. Don't know if the antiseptic helps kill any germs from outside but it never hurts.

If I can give a shout out to two places I listen to:
1. MarfoogleNews on DLive. You know he is right on the target cause Discord annihilated his whole channel cause to many people were getting together to talk about prepping in different states. He still holds reports about 3 times a week on DLive and has a lot of followers that are about unity.

2. TexasNewsStudio DLive also. News from around the world and alert updates~He used to be on YT but they canned him cause they didn't want him streaming news. Now he can only go on YT when there is an important update. SMH

I pray for your health Pooka. White light and healing be with you~

Be safe,be prepared. Much Love ya' all~

When things run low...start thinking alternatives!

Say sugar is out...there are jams, syrups, karo, candy, peaches packed in heavy syrup, pie compote, etc.

If steak & chicken are running low...there is hot dogs, sausage, spam, canned salmon, tuna, chili (no beans), peanut butter, etc.

It may not be exactly what you wanted...but it's close enough.

For the first time, I saw large bags of beans and rice again. Snagged some up. One thing I notice that is disturbing is the baking items. Flour was scarce, along with baking powder, and soda. I did manage to grab some sugar, but I think they had just put out a pallet of it.

Meat is very low and still no lysol.

For those on a budget, orrington farms makes a powdered ham seasoning that is delicious with any kind of bean. I would recommend bullion powders and cubes because they are easy to store and they make rice and beans taste delicious without a lot of effort.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I went to the store a few days ago. It is a store I usually avoid (nation's largest retailer) but I needed a few things and didn't want to wait for other stores to open.

Groceries and paper goods were well-stocked, but other sections of the store had bare shelves. Clothing, housewares, etc. had many empty spots.

I guess when nearly everything comes from China, it will have an effect on inventory. Just an observation.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Agreeing with your observation.

Having said I wanted to avoid that particular store in future, I went a week or two ago, because that is the source of my buckets - added eight more - and so I picked up my usual few things there - coffee, peanut butter, etc. Didn't shop for clothing but as I passed that huge section, it looked full as can be. I never look for canned vegetables, so couldn't say about those, but generally they are a source of complaint.

We need to get back to comparing notes on stores and availability of merchandise because now it should start turning downward again, toward another big nationwide shut-in, due to the strong increase in covid cases and perhaps another disease coming as well.

Thank you, Mother Knows Best, for your observations and suggestions! Welcome here and bless you!

Baking items have been in short supply in much of the country - people are still complaining about yeast not available, and sometimes flour, though not as much as a few months ago.

The way we have to approach shopping now, I think, is to just grab whatever has come available and not be too disappointed about what we are unable to find at the moment, in hopes all our needs will be met before we are locked down again. Good that you had access to sugar - it's not always easy to find.

At the beginning of prepping, about a year ago, I was able to get big bags of beans and of rice - not like fifty pounds, but more reasonable size for one person plus one dog, and I bought several of each. Since then, when the bigger bags disappeared, I started purchasing the smaller size beans, all the variety I could find, for roughly a dollar a bag, sometimes less. Then I learned that lentils are faster to cook than beans, and higher, I think, in nutritional value, so I have leaned a bit toward them. Never do see them in large bags.

I don't care for rice, at all, and since it has almost no nutritional value, I've now changed tactics and am buying cornmeal instead. Hoping it will last, of course. Would like to make room for it permanently in the freezer instead of just for the three days to kill insects. I could get down the beans more easily if I had corn bread or corn something to help, which also completes the protein just as rice does, but more palatable [for me]. Had one bag already and purchased three more yesterday. That would quickly make into a form of pancake or almost anything, sparing long use of the substitute cooker, assuming we are in a grid down mess.

You are right, I believe, in recommending the purchase of bouillon powders and cubes to enhance flavors. I've found several, including tomato, in big jars. All these things that can enhance what we are cooking and/or eating in such an easy fashion are very desirable - we will be tired from all the work we need to do and we will not need more work if avoidable.

The only Lysol I've seen in ages is the kind to apply with a spout under the rim of the facility in the bathroom. No bottles or even Lysol wipes. People were very excited that the Lysol container says it handles covid or another word for this illness, and could not onboard the information that those words had been on there since like the seventies or eighties and did not mean the one we are facing right now.

Lovely to have another person from whom to learn about availabilities and even prices from another area of the country.

Mother Knows Best, what is your area of the country? I'm in W. WA state.

I've recently decided to eliminate pork from my diet. I will say I have enjoyed ham steaks in the past, but the last one I had, which has been perhaps eight years or so, I purchased at the local grocery and when I removed it from the package, discovered it was spoiled. That was so disgusting I didn't even return it - just tossed it and have had no interest since then.

We need to remember comfort foods, and it sounds like a ham steak is comfort food for you - good job! We want to avoid taste boredom, and we need to have stocked some things that are pure pleasure in the eating, just because we will need such pleasures and the change in fare.

Part of my preps is going to be a new smoker. I am leaning towards the rectec 700. It uses very little power and I can easily store 1000 lbs of pellets in dry storage.

Smoke is an incredible way to store meat, mid-term.

(Such blush)

I am sorry that I don’t venture out often anymore.... so much anger out there.

Your thread is extremely important. It was honor to be around when you created it.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

Are you in a larger city? Wonder if that's the source of so much anger. I live in a small town and while I can feel an undercurrent that indicates a person could in a flash turn into a yelling shrew, the anger isn't overt, at last not yet.

I don't go out much either because I'm avoiding the virus, and because as an introvert home is ever so much nicer than being in public! Also, we are under strong warning that BLM is going to invade communities, neighborhoods, businesses, government offices, and private homes. This is horrible, and this is what they plan. This has nothing to do with any of their original objectives. They just want to cause harm now, and pain, and be destructive and dangerous. Staying home is safest, and also it places one in a position to prevent, God willing, a home invasion.

We've been through some times in this thread, and some dangers, and most or all of us have escaped them so far. Until now. Now I am afraid we are all targets and total escape is less likely. We have to face what is going on, the widespread marxism attempt in our country, the irrational threats by the blm. We are closer now than we have ever been, in my considerable lifespan, to personal assault and danger of even more. If it is possible for people to stay home, please consider doing so. Use any security devices you have, and trust nobody. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!!! Remember back when we ran scenarios? Probably a good time to start that again, with all this new information and new threats.

Members of this thread tend to be of the smarter variety, so we all know what to do, but let's share it anyway for newcomers and for the less-experienced.

I just green-pinned us - hope it isn't too late in the day. Maybe we will catch the east coast evening bunch.

Clever Creator, remember why we created this thread? It was almost fun back then, when we had some concerns, but nothing like we have now. Some of us have been together for a long time - I like this. I like our friendships here, and want every one of us to survive what is coming head-on. Let's tr to stay even closer than we have in the past, supporting and encouraging each other and keeping in close contact, just in case.

I have been picking up extra supplies of the sort that disappeared in the last lockdown, as well as taking advantage of BOGO sales to refresh my medicine chest.

What are your OTC medications that you keep on hand? To start with I keep:

Aspirin - pain reliever
Ibuprofen - pain reliever
Naproxen sodium - pain reliever
Acetaminophen - pain reliever
Diphenhydramine - allergy relief and sleep aid
Antidiarrheal
Nyquil - The new formula doesn't work nearly as well.
Theraflu
Pseudoephedrine - the stuff that you have to show ID for.
Antacids
Cough drops
Hydrocortisone cream
Hydrogen peroxide
Rubbing alcohol
Hibiclens
Povidone iodine scrub
Vicks Vaporub - mentholated gunk for cough.
Calamine lotion - for poison ivy

Other things that I'm thinking of:
Desitin - zinc oxide cream, commonly used for diaper rash
A&D cream
Antibiotic cream

Obviously I'm missing some things so I'd welcome suggestions!

Just noted Vick's Vaporub in the list above.

That got scarce here at one point (as did any other cold/flu/allergy remedy).

You can make a pretty good Vick's substitute with coconut oil, sweet almond oil, beeswax, and peppermint oil (experiment to see how strong you like it). Put 1 cup coconut oil, 1/2 C almond oil, and 1/2 cup beeswax in a Mason jar. Set in pan of heating water until melted together. Pour into smaller containers and immediately add peppermint oil. The first time I made it, I think it was 15 to 20 drops peppermint. Now I just kind of pour it in because I like it strong. But be careful. Some folks only need a little. If you find you need it stronger, just melt it again and add more (or add more coconut oil if it's too strong). It's GREAT for stuffy noses in allergy season.

Practically speaking, months, possibly up to a year. This includes the things I'll preserve out of the garden. We have a small house without much discreet storage space. Of course, in catastrophic conditions when discretion is a luxury, the "extra room" could be filled quite nicely and rapidly.

We do have some farm land about 2 miles from here and there are a few cattle, which could come in handy. A few goats and some chickens could easily be added. There's also a deep pond which needs to be stocked again.

For very long term, water would be the biggest concern. Digging a well wouldn't be practical at the house as there are coal mine voids under the property, though we can collect rain water. Rain is also the water source at the farm, but drilling a well might be an option there. The water would most likely have to be highly filtered even then.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I put in an order to rainydayfoods.com in April. Finally arriving tomorrow.

I ordered a pallet full, 1050 lbs., to save on freight.

Have not checked their inventory lately but they specialize in bulk staple foods and long term storage stuff.

You can buy wheat in mylar bags inside of food grade pails with an oxygen absorber pack that will last until your great grandchildren need it.

My pallet ended up costing $1400, but there is enough emergency food to help my large family through next Winter.

They used to be Walton Feed. In 2009 I bought a pallet from them that included a 6 gallon pail of molasses which I use to make whole grain bread. I still am using that supply from 2009.

BTW, to make sure the molasses kept, I heated gallon jars to 250F and heated my molasses on the stove to boiling temp. Poured into the hot jars and capped. No mold after 11 years in storage.

The most basic foods that last almost forever include wheat berries, powdered milk, sugar, salt, rice, potato flakes, honey, and a few others.

If you order a pallet, you don't need a forklift. Just cut the plastic pallet wrap and unload the bags and pails off the pallet. Being a farmer, I have a forklift attachment for my tractor.

Keep preppin'!

I should add, Rainy Day will probably be able to fill orders faster now because food will be harvested soon.

Over here in north Idaho we see this company's bulk bags of beans in several of the markets. (link below) They are well priced.

There was a woman who used to make a huge bulk order for the community several times a year (prepper) and got super discounted prices which she passed along to us. 20# bag of soup mix beans for $8, but that was last year. She isn't doing that anymore so I just buy at the supermarket.

The company is in Moses Lake, Washington; you can call and make a bulk order if you live within driving distance.

Otherwise, see what bulk foods may be available from factories in your area, or from restaurant supply companies. Also Azurestandard.com delivers healthy bulk food supplies all over the country, every other week. It gets dropped off at local markets and you go pick up your order. Even our tiny town has three drop off points. Great quality, a little expensive, but cheaper than driving three hours round trip to Costco.

I don't wear gloves that much. Hands can be washed.

But I do wear glasses. If I didn't have glasses, I would wear goggles. This virus enters the body through the eyes as well as the nose.

Very good suggestions, added to the list. Especially the temporary tooth filling kit.

I also like the mouse traps, pest control is certainly part of keeping healthy. Just picked a pack of fly strips up to put in storage.

:)

Funny, silly, I was referring to the main page here, but yah.... big cities too. We live in a suburb of Des Moines.

Yah... I remember those scenarios. I am blessed in my community. But they are not social distancing so we don’t go out either.

This thread allowed me to share and help others while I was still healing in my own life. And yah, the friendships here also helped me to ignore the TROLLS. Or thump them on their nose.... depending on my mood.

Hugs and prayers. You are loved.
