This is wise advice - keep everything done up, completely. No groups of laundry hanging around undone, nor dirty dishes hidden in the oven - nothing like that - everything done so we can at least start out fresh.

Hope everyone has taken with tremendous seriousness the advice to have five gallons water per day per person put away. Having nothing that could hold clean water for you sitting empty at ANY time - keep them filled. I'm astonished at my own devices in this - LOL. I had put away a number of gallons of water in buckets, that would last a bit. Then when covid came along, I started drinking a lot of vitamin water/juice in large individual bottles. Washed them and filled with water. Have so so so many of those now! I can stuff them into the freezer if any empty spaces to help the freezer stay frozen. Thinner type I can put holes in and use to water pots and planters in the garden. Mainly, we can drink it, cook with it, use it for the dog's bowl, anything at all. Don't waste anything you have that would safely hold water. Just never use milk jugs as that is dangerous. Use them for watering the garden. Put holes in the bottom - fill the jugs or bottles, control rate of flow by how you open or close the lid.

Has anybody noticed we seem to be about 4-6 weeks ahead in the growing season?

My tomato plants started bearing fruit early...my cilantro plant is already dead. Even my hops look like they're starting to flower & that should start until mid september.

It's cooling down too...todays high was 75

Not here. It has been around 100 degrees every day for the past 6 weeks or so. My garden is suffering.

Hey Pooka and the rest of you guys,

I was just catching up on the thread and read about having all of your dishes washed, as someone who has gone without power and water for an extended time and had to use rainwater for washing. I would recommend buying paper plates and plastic forks and spoons to cut back on the amount of dishes to wash, they are cheap and you can just burn them in a trash barrel if trash services stop picking up the garbage.

Sorry if someone already mentioned this, but it was news to me today.

If you're a canner and you're going to need lids, get shopping right now. It literally took more than half the day in two towns to find 4 boxes of wide-mouth lids and I ended up buying 24 jars, mostly to get the freaking lids. Fortunately, I found a place where they weren't price gouging. You can still get them on Amazon but they are WAY over priced. A box of just lids (no rings) usually costs about $3. They're about $12 to $15 on Amazon right now. I paid $10.50 for a box of 12 jars with rings and lids. On Amazon, the same deal $42. One jerk was selling a box of 6 for $34. Some dealers may have them for less, but I didn't spend a lot of time there.

Not one retailer I visited in town had lids for sale by themselves (I stopped by at an Amish store way out in the country and the woman said they can get them sometimes but they go really fast. I got one box for $3.50).

Menard's and Tractor Supply Company both still had 12-jar boxes for $10.50, but they were the only ones I saw.

Well, okay, Walmart had two boxes of lids & rings for $15, but they were the house brand. Ummm... no. I used them once and every single jar failed to seal.

Hoping the whole country isn't like this, but looking around online, I'm afraid it might be.
