Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Pressure canners were on the short supply list and then the unobtainable list waaaay baaaaack during the original shortages. Gotta catch up and stay on top! Hope you are not suddenly going to go looking for a freezer - they've been out of stock for many moons.

Screws, nails and building supplies, especially pressure-treated lumber, are now very difficult to find, as are various wires - chicken wire especially. Foil and things made of aluminum. Canned proteins less and less available. Eggs in eastern half of country. Shooty things and freedom seeds that shoot out of shooty things. {If you have to ask what I mean, just don't bother. Thanks} Coins, home appliances, select Clorox products, and TA DA swimming pools! Sure planned to grab me two or three of those, right? Or was it beans and rice I was gonna get. Hmmmm Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Those are the current shortages - I will try to remember to post current ones fairly often since obviously people are not looking at the places where I am.

By the way, along with your pressure canner issues, lids, rings and jars are very difficult to find. If you find any, just grit your teeth and buy them, no matter the price. You can bet your favorite pink tutu that you will not find them any cheaper within the next fifteen or twenty years.
 Quoting: Pooka

Yeah. Freezer. We currently have a small chest freezer we haven't used in about two years. It works fine, but we no longer need the capacity since the kids all moved out. I was thinking about putting it up for sale, maybe $60-$75. Nah, I think we'll just keep it.

Canning jar lids. Yeah, I needed some wide mouth lids a few weeks ago. I hit Tractor Supply, as they usually put canning supplies on clearance this time of year. Wiped out of...everything. They had one jug of vinegar left. No jars or lids.

I ended up buying the lids elsewhere for an obscene price. $6 for 12 lids. SMH.

BTW, I am very well stocked in shooty things and freedom seeds. I also regenerate freedom seeds, although the means to do so are also currently in short supply or nonexistent.

Crunch62, research if there is a Grocery Outlet in your area. That's the name of it, as well as the type. The absolutely most amazing things can be found there, including amazing prices on most of it.

What brought that to mind was your comment on vinegar - I always buy mine there, as well as virtually all groceries I buy. Vinegar is around $3 a gallon when they have it, which is most of the time. They've had canners, jars, all of it, at varying times. Go there often, because you never know what you will find. It's my favorite store - all my vitamins and other supplements come from there, and a host of other things, including all my frozen items.

Good luck on finding the other things you require. Hit or miss, all of it, but if we are locked down again around the first - count it all gone and shopping done. Won't be a good time to be out, anyway. Stay home safe will be the mantra of wise people.

Edited to add that you might want to put meat in your freezer, at least some. Protein sources are what have gone missing first thing.

Caught a note late last night that fresh fruits, especially citrus, are suddenly being "recalled" and that's how the protein sources began disappearing, too, so if you count on lemons, limes, etc in your foods - grab and preserve quickly.

Rice, pasta, canned beans, high protein pancake mix & tang(both only needs water), instant coffee with powdered cream, variety of canned vegetables plus popcorn and pop tarts is a NICE START LIST.

Canned beans is better than dried for most people as it is easier to prepare.

Pasta can be just soaked in water over time & then it is edible. Have not tried this, only heard it is doable.

Time to REMEMBER T-A-N-G.

CELEBRATE LOWERING OUR FOOD STANDARDS.

Worrying about low carb, low sugar, low fat or organic only is in the past for many. It is about KEEPING BELLIES FULL.

Never too late to prepare, JUST BECOME AWARE.

Bulk can still be found at certain stores. And low price meats are available as well. I just found 3 pounds of 70% lean/30% fat ground beef for $2. Yes $2 for 3 pounds in a roll. Those rolls are superior as there is no extra air in package.

Kroger has bulk sugar 25 pounds. Winco has a nice bulk section with buckets & lids of various sizes.

Interesting to see you so agreeable with the hour being too late. Wrong, of course. There is another week or two at minimum in which to prep. Having food and supplies even for one week extends life at least that far, and anything can happen in a week - an invitation from a family member to come live on the farm where they are all stocked and growing more, for example. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO PREPARE!!

Thank you, Giselle!! You are exactly right - NOT TOO LATE I like your list of suggestions. One thing I'd add - it is possible to cook oat meal, beans, rice, etc, by putting them in a stainless steel thermos overnight, filled with boiling water. I wrap a towel around mine to help hold in heat. Food is ready when you get up in the morning! No cooking required - soak beans first for faster and softer.

Thank you again, Giselle - you are right on!!!

Then why start a thread that depresses and frightens people? In what way was this helpful to anyone? People need encouragement, especially those who suddenly realize they had better do something quickly. Cannot imagine why you made that thread.

Well said, my friend MC!!!!

My grandparents raised children during the Depression, so I saw the aftermath, when they continued gardening, canning, saving everything, storing foods, sewing, all the wise and frugal ways. It simply made sense to me - be ready for whatever might come in this world. A person could lose their job, be injured, become ill, any manner of thing might occur. Have the food and supplies on hand to carry you through whatever happens.

That's what I learned as a very young child and it has always made sense to me, and has been very useful during my lifetime already. Now we have so much coming at us, we cannot do less!

Right now we face famine, pandemic, economic collapse, ice age, solar minimum, weather anomalies - and whatever more I am forgetting. If you have not prepared - I'm sorry - you still have a little time, though it will be expensive.

Bear in mind that if you purchase today foods that you like and do eat, if nothing whatever happens in the world but good things, you will not have to go shopping for some time, can save that money, and will be eating much less expensively the same foods others are trying to buy to eat today!

My concern over disappointment is our Founding Fathers. They gave their blood, their lives, everything to make this country what it was. A republic, under God. A Constitution, a Bill of Rights - they handed us everything we needed, and they told us how to keep it, as well. They made certain we had the right and the way to stop any tyranny, to remove any politicians creating evil here, twisting the Constitution or attempting to do away with it, and here we are.

We sit doing nothing but talk and type. We do not stand up for ourselves, much less water the tree of Liberty as we were instructed to do. We sit and wait for circumstances to become worse, for the end of this wonderful way of life as we knew it.

Why are we doing this? What great fears prevent us from standing up? Why can we not follow what was given to us to do?

One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

I would surely recommend you shop there, Crunch, even if it requires waiting in town until 7 and then shopping. Have breakfast and/or a cup of coffee. You will save a great deal of money and find some amazing items. Do it every time you go to town, and go over every shelf and aisle. Some things you will see only once and never again. The kind of tea I prefer was there just once for a dollar a box. Never again. Only could afford four box that particular time. Rats!

Remember that this store does not have the same things all the time. Like any bargain store, they have different items that crop up at different times.

I've seen jars off and on for some time since spring. Doubt if there is a single jar there five days per week. The suddenly there will be three cases, which are gone that day, none the next.. If you see and purchase them on Wed. go back again when you can and see if more pop up! By all means!

One has no idea what might turn up, but the best things do not stay in the store but are snatched up quickly. Recently I found a package of motion-detecting solar-powered outdoor lights that I adore - mine was the last package of them. Two more packages, or three, actually, would have been perfect. Unfortunately, I was not there in time, and am blessed to have the one package!

Things like that, amazing bargains of amazing items, happen in that store all the time. Well worth not heading home in time unless you have reason to believe a physical attack will occur otherwise. Or something of the sort.

The owner/manager of our store is terrific. She has been a great help to me in many ways. Her son was in highschool when I moved to this area and began shopping there. Since then he completed highschool and college and now works with his mother. The store accepts returns very nicely, at least for regular customers, except right now during covid when they take no returns. Right now I am watching there for a small charcoal broiler in case the grid goes down and I have to start cooking chicken breasts that were less than a dollar a lb. there last fall!

Much of it is still in storage. My youngest daughter is still stationed in Hawaii, so the giant master bedroom suite she inherited is still wrapped in moving blankets and stored in my barn. The bed is a king-size 4-poster, with 'cannon balls' the size of cantaloupes on top of each post.

My nephew is currently building a house up near Eureka. He received the dining room set my dad built, and actually designed the dining room in his new home around that furniture. A big trestle table and chairs, and a large china cabinet/hutch.

I don't know it you are familiar with 'Early American Colonial' furniture, but that is what all of this stuff is. All solid wood, beautifully stained and finished.

I have the grandfather clock my dad built, as it has a small footprint and is really the only thing I have room for. It still bears the scars due to falling over during the 1971 Sylmar earthquake in So Cal. There were many other things I would like to have had, but don't have the space for.

Just a misc. on something that might be needed for the future
but you may not have in your supplies.

I recently had a toenail removed by my dr. and he suggested triple antibiotic ointment, fabric bandages and sterile saline solution for the twice daily wound wash.

The first two I had, the saline I did not have, so I bought a spray pump can of it at a local drug store. It was the Arm & Hammer brand.

Listed as a "pressurized saline wash helps remove dirt and debris"

Anyways thought I would mention as a good thing to have.

I'm getting a bit concerned.

I mentioned that my basil was dying...and it shouldn't be until it hits 40 degrees (and we are nowhere near that cool).

I was looking around the yard today thinking about mowing the lawn...but it doesn't need it...even though we got over 3 inches of rain this week. Highs in the 70's and 80's.

My hops are flowering...that shouldn't happen for another month. The peonys and ferns are turning brown...that shouldn't happen until the first freeze.

The tomatoes & tobacco are fine...no tree leaves turning yellow yet.

What the heck is going on? 1dunno1

This is darn peculiar.
If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am!

Excellent idea, especially considering the danger to our health during less than idea hygienic conditions. Thank you very much for this suggestion - I also do not have this product and hope to find some. Have to go out this afternoon to pick up prescription refills and stop by the store - will see if they have this item.

Thank you again for wise advice, AC 0393

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Crunch:

So your first thought when I asked was not these exact words, "Last I saw of it looked like they were taking extremely good care of it."??

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor

Agreed. There are weather anomalies all over the world and your yard is not an exception. We are to experience famine, and fighting against it is going to take most of our time and concentration.

Everybody, please look at several videos on YouTube about Kratky hydroponics and see if you can make it work for your home. It's the safest means of food production I have found, both against weather anomalies and against theft by starving people and deliberate marauders. Do as you will, but first, seriously consider this option.

I slow cooked a beef roast at about 200 degrees (covered)...when it had an hour to go I added a cup of white rice.

The rice soaked up all the fat & cooked very well...but I really didn't want to eat rice that was that fattening (I had 2 spoonsfull).

I decided to put that fatty rice in baggies & freeze it...it should be great in a soup!

Indeed!! Is sure is. And when cold outside, which it will be more and more, colder and colder, soup will warm us to the bone and be a cost-saver, as well. Toss everything into it.

Thank you, Swoopster! Keep 'em coming!

Everybody has seen the warning of covid-contaminated chicken, I hope?!?!?!

As I've said for a year or more, the only food we know is safe and ready for us is what we have under our roofs.

Be careful, good people, very careful. We don't know what is coming toward us, from which direction.
