For the first time ever I'm trying to make spaghetti sauce from scratch.

I have tomatoes coming out of my ying yang and I don't know what to do with them all. Wish me luck!

This was a lifesaver! The nesco made canning so much easier, and I canned the juice like she said. I have a tomato processor, but I like this method better. And you could easily make spaghetti sauce the same way.

I have one, it would be pretty expensive to use long-term. I think that for an emergency it is an okay option. I have the one that runs on the propane cans.

I have one too, but CO poisoning can be a big concern with them. It is best to get a CO monitor and a good one if you plan on using it indoors and make sure the room is ventilated.

I have been lurking on this thread and would like to say thank you to everyone for their ideas and expiences. I cannot recall if this has been posted before but The Latter Days Saints have canneries.

You can use their facility to can dry goods that they sell very cheaply.. Options are #10 cans and mylar bags.

Here is their price list which is reasonable for long term food storage. They are open to the public by appt and are all over the USA and Canada.

They will also prepack and ship to you if a centre is not close by.

Available in Canada and the USA

They have delicious, wonderful food at the best prices. Even if you cannot pack your own, this is a great place to pick up or order from.

If you wish to purchase foods from a commercial place, Auguson Farms is the very best of all long-term food supplies. You can purchase the cans in Walmart, using cash, and not be tracked by the feds, or from their direct sales site and be tracked.

Please forgive as I have not read all the pages and this might be a repeat from someone else.

I found these freezer bag cooking recipes for some fast meals. Just google "Freezer Bag Cooking." Most everything came from the dollar tree. I put in some instant mashed potatoes, instant stove top like stuffing, about a third of a package of dry chicken gravy mix. I store with that a tuna fish sized can of dollar tree turkey chunks (other places sell it too). To cook throw dry ingredients in some boiling water in a freezer bag and wait (I used a pyrex dish) or nuke it. Add the canned meat. I threw some craisins on top, and it tasted a lot like thanksgiving for very little.

You can vary it by flavors too, like dried brown gravy mix is 30 cents for an envelope at wally world. Use a third of the package. Stuffing can be beef and instant potatoes and you can throw some TINY dried veggies in too. I made up some finely chopped dried veggies in my dehydrator just for that purpose. Put the lid on and store with a can of beef on top or pair it with deli beef or leftover hamburger from your fridge.

I put these not in freezer bags but in deli cartons that I bought at the store that sells restaurant supplies. That bag of 50 containers was $5. I wash them out and reuse them. I don't nuke in them but use pyrex for that.

Also, if you had no way to cook, most of these recipes can rehydrate in plain water and be eaten cold.

I also use the same deli cartons with lids to put pre-portioned cereal in there so that all you add is milk and just eat it in the carton. Kids like it and no mess when they try to pour a big box of cereal. Just wash and reuse the containers. They work great.

So we don't eat like this every day, but for some fast preps without spending a lot, these little containers have been great. I plan to put up many of them with different recipes from the Freezer Bag Cooking website. Much cheaper than Mountain house and using canned meat, and you can still get your meat protein right out of the pantry.

Check the Mr. Buddy's and for indoor use purchase only the one that is certified for indoor use. That's the one I purchased. Also, not necessary to use those tiny expensive cans. Can use the pot-bellied size propane canister or even a larger canister - just buy the right connector hose. I purchased one with a meter on it, just out of an abundance of caution.

Having a CO2 monitor is wisest in all cases, but this Buddy heater is safe indoors - don't get the other kind and try it indoors, please. Stay safe.

A fireplace is not nearly as efficient as a wood stove if you have a choice between the two. An "airtight" wood stove is wonderful - miss mine terribly.

Yes, I recommend a Mr. Buddy that is certified safe for indoor use. It's what I chose after a lot of research. You can get a connector for larger propane containers as the tiny canisters are very expensive.

Let us know what you decide, AC 6857. Just make it safe.

AC 5090, you have tripped over your keyboard. This is my thread, and I was the first and currently am the last to warn of famine and food shortage and will continue warning of this, as we are in grave danger of starvation if we are not prepared.

If you wish to name me, it's spelled POOKA. As to shaming me, that's going to be mighty tough going for you.

The shame is on you if you are not understanding what's just ahead and you have not prepared for yourself and your family. Do you not read and see about all the empty shelves around the country? The need for Kratky hydroponics growing food inside your home for the winter? The shelves and pantries and buckets of water and food you really must have put away?

I'm curious what you do believe - you feel there will always be plenty of food available? Do tell us, please.

Signed by an accused fear-mongering shill. LOL

Does anyone here drink Dr. Pepper? My wife drinks a lot of it.

I have noticed it is getting hard to find at the normal grocery stores. Especially 12 pack cans.

Often, it is nonexistent in the mainstream stores, or they might have a few 2-liters, but none in cans.

Thankfully, the closest store to me (10 miles) usually has plenty, but pricey.

Anyone else notice any 'soda shortages'?

The cans seem to be the problem, Crunch. Not enough aluminum to make enough cans to provide enough soda.

Is your wife aware of how unhealthy that drink is? Any chance of switching her to tea, water, juice, anything non-soda? We need to be dealing with nutrition, not just tickling our tastebuds, in preparation for what's coming shortly. She will be forced to do without soon - is she aware? This is a good time to start. Sowwy for bad news.

Now why would we be sending all our aluminum to CHina? I don't think so. I can't recall why we are low, but if you back up a few pages to where I first warned about the shortage, I put the reason in there.

I'm not so sure they are so far ahead of us in the arms race - could be but I don't think so. We have lots of hidden items that will be pulled out only when truly needed.

SUGGESTION for a new taste...STEVIA liquid flavored sweetener...16 flavors.

START with fresh brewed tea. I use Teabags soaked in Willard's water DARK(optimizes water & nutrients). Makes tea healthier & darker when iced.

[link to www.swansonvitamins.com (secure)]

Best tea ever, Peach cinnamon & hibiscus [link to www.lacremecoffeeandtea.com (secure)]

Earl grey with double bergamot(helps with depression) tea, $3, found everywhere. [link to www.farmandfleet.com (secure)]

Best place with best selection of tea, ASIAN STORES. Plum tea is great & naturally sweet found at Asian stores.

Also large health food stores with vast bulk section, like CENTRAL MARKET.

I will any kind of tea & combine them. Right now drinking Blackberry Sage.

[link to www.sweetleaf.com (secure)]

[link to www.stevia-intl.com (secure)]

I use LIQUID FLAVORED STEVIA. Here are some of my favorite combos.

Fresh brewed tea + mint stevia + fresh squeezed lime.

Fresh brewed tea + root beer stevia

Fresh brewed tea + orange stevia

Fresh brewed tea + raspberry chocolate stevia = tea + no sugar chocolate bar

Many new flavors & many new combinations...make it fun.

You must be near all those fires. Did you prep your vehicle for a bug out yet? Hope you will be safe. One thing you can do which can be better than a bug out bag is a bug out vehicle that's fitted with a mobile kitchen. A dish tub, a camp stove, cook set, mess kit, and a tub full of whatever you need is easier to transport in a car. You can then cook in a hotel room, at a campsite or driveway surfing at a friend's place.

I hope you won't be evacuated though.
