What I try to do is stock up on things I use regularly...so I just have more in the house/cupboards/freezer.

That way...in the long run...it costs me nothing...because it's all stuff I eat/use regularly.

Sure I have my stash of dry rice, beans, and pasta...but after that it's all just regular stuff (meat peanutbutter jam spaghetti sauce etc).

Helpful hint :

about that ramen.. I stocked alot and found out later that those noodles are made with oil that will go rancid over time. As unhealthy as they are they are not shelf stable.

Honestly sealed flour with the little saved disecant (spelling) pouches.... even from shoe boxes would be better than ramen.

Solid oils like lard or coconut or such. Amazon has had yeast back in

I make a pot of chicken broth or bullion and add a pound of linguini...slow cook it covered for an hour & it's alot better than ramen. Not to mention it's MANY meals.

Save the rancid oils by all means!!! Stick a wick in a bowl/saucer/tray/jar whatever and add oil for a great candle. Oil your boots. Do whatever you think of, but especially light.

I have a possible solution for mice...moth balls.

About 2 months ago I was in my basement & I heard a mouse scratching...I tossed about 6 moth balls around because it was the only thing I had at the moment (only 6 in various places because I didn't want to stink up the house with moth balls).

Now the nights are getting into the 40's and that's when the mice like to come inside...so I set out 4 glue traps and a few poison baits (as usual for autumn).

After 2 weeks I have nothing in the traps and no baits have been touched.

I think the moth balls annoyed any critters enough to leave.

That's what I'm looking for in my preps. Long winter? No problem. Vitamin D? Maybe. So many things in one simple observation.

Already have men's and women's multivitamins in my preps. Get them while you still can. It's a basic supplement while you are gathering other stuff.

Interesting. Having a renewable source for edible oil/fat is what prompted me to start planting my little olive orchard about 12 years ago.

It has been a learning experience for me. I try to refine and expedite the process every year. It. is. a. lot. of. work.

I planted this mini-orchard (currently 14 trees) over the course of several years. At the beginning, I noticed that Grocery Outlet had olive trees mixed in with the fruit trees they usually have out front in the spring. Quality trees (Duarte) for dirt cheap. I bought a few every year for about 4 years, and then they stopped having them. :(

The varieties I have are Arbequina and Koroneiki, which are very small olives, but with high oil content. The first year I harvested (from about 8 tiny tees) I gleaned a coffee can full of olives. Hardly enough to warrant processing for oil. I decided to brine them for eating. Very tasty, although being so small, they were mostly pit.

The harvests grew larger in the following years as I added more trees and they grew larger. I experimented with various methods for grinding the olives. I tried a standard kitchen blender (smoked it). I tried an old hand-cranked meat grinder. It worked, but was extremely slow and tiring.

I was contemplating a heavy-duty meat grinder from Cabela's or similar, made for processing game meat. They are very expensive. Then I stumbled on an online post from someone who said they were using a heavy-duty garbage disposal to grind olives. A trip to HD and $125 later, I had a 1 1/2 HP garbage disposal. I mounted in an old kitchen sink on a stand, and it worked very well.

But grinding the olives is only the start of the battle. These are the basic steps to processing olives.
1) Grinding. This produces a thick paste.
2) Low speed mixing (known as malaxation or malaxing), which starts the process of separating the oil from the water and everything else.
3) Pressing, which produces a mixture of oil, water and sediment.
4) Racking, which separates the water from the oil due to gravity.
5) Filtering, which removes most remaining sediment.
6) Bottling (the fun part...finally).

I currently process such"
Grinding - the garbage disposal into a food-grade 5 gal. bucket.
Malaxing - I use my wife's Kitchenaid mixer on the slowest setting. It takes about 40 min. per bowl to separate the oil.
Pressing - I wrap a few scoops of the malaxed paste in cheesecloth, like a burrito. Grade 50 cheesecloth works best. Grade 10 (like from the grocery store) is too loose and open. Grade 90 is too tight. I press them using a standard 12-ton hydraulic shop press ($100-ish from Harbor Freight). I press onto a cookie sheet with a 3/4" hole in one corner. A bucket hung underneath catches the oil/water.
Racking - I bought a plastic cone-bottomed tank with a threaded fitting on the bottom, to which I attached a valve. I initially tried a 5-gal bucket with a valve, but got too much water in the oil due to the flat bottom.
Filtering - I first tried coffee filters, but it was way to slow. One drip every 30 seconds. I now use several (8-12) layers of cheesecloth which is quite fast and effective in filtering out sediment and even any remaining water.
Bottling - Out of the racking tank, through the filter funnel and into the bottle!

Last season, we gleaned 187 ounces of beautiful oil, not including waste from 14 trees. There is always some waste, as oil sticks to the buckets, filters, etc.

The harvest this year looks to be less (olive trees produce on new growth in alternate years) but they are nearly ready to pick. I can't wait to get started.

Of course, the commercial producers use millions of dollars worth of equipment to the same end. They don't press anymore, they use high-speed centrifuges to separate the water and oil. They don't pick by hand. They malax in huge vessels the size of tanker trucks. California Olive Ranch has a huge orchard and production facility just a mile from where I live.

But I think my oil is just as good as theirs ;)

Sorry to bore you...but I like sustainable olive oil.

Crunch62, your explanation of harvesting your olive oil was not one bit boring! It was fascinating!

So much work and expense - wow! You always have the best methods of figuring out ways to accomplish the things!

I'm surprised - or maybe not - that so much equipment is required, yet those are mostly one-time purchases. The result, home-grown real olive oil with no excipients, entirely home-grown and home-processed - amazing! I love this! Despite the work, if I could afford the equipment and had the trees, I'd o it, too! In a heartbeat! Very wise of you to have prepared, and so early, for good fats!! They will be desperately required in times of famine for the human body as well as for our pets.

What really hurts me is that you found these trees at GO - that's where all my fruit trees and blueberries have come from over the years. I look through a group of fruit trees, perhaps four or five trees, and if all are the same or similar, I stop looking, and must thereby have missed the olive trees. Aargh!! I'll do better at looking in future!

You are a very smart man, and very efficient and productive. You are a blessing in this thread as teacher and demonstrater, as well as encourager - thank you for this on growing one's own olive oil!!

People in this thread with lots of green karma, would you please give KTEE green every week - she uses up all her green in pinning this thread to the front page!

Secondly, though I have never asked before, I need 19 more green in order to upgrade myself for a month. My green has been used up in pinning this thread and in trying to help others - I have 300 green right now sitting in the section to upgrade a friend for a month, but something is wrong with the system and I couldn't upgrade anybody, but not even Admin can get my karma back for me.

If you don't know what I am talking about in using your green karma, just ask and I'll talk you through it, but only here in the thread as I cannot private message anyone until I am upgraded again.

If you don't know how to use your green, again just ask and I'll explain it.

Thank you for giving KTee green - she really deserves it! If you choose to do the same for me, much gratitude!

At least one person took the above post as encouragement to begin learning to use their karma for others - that's exciting and I'm grateful. Lots of things are possible on this forum - I'm happy to explain things, especially now that I can do so in PM again! Did you know there is a private forum for only admin, mods, and upgraded people? Cool beans, eh?

So much you can do here - just give it a shot or ask me questions.

I was looking to find a way to process olives for oil without spending thousands of dollars I do not have. I am into it for a few hundred bucks and enjoying it.

There is a commercial 'hobby press' that sells for over $3000. And what is it? A garbage disposal and a shop press.

[link to wholesale.oliveoilsource.com (secure)]

I do like their press plates, though. They could save me some time over pressing the individual cheesecloth burritos. But over $100 for a set. I am working on making my own.

Never mind the below message. Found the "culprit" and it's a good friend who comes here only occasionally. What a kind thing for him to do!

One more thing, people - are you, ALL OF YOU, using your karma daily for the purpose intended? You receive nearly ten green karmas daily, if you use them, to give to other people. Nobody seems to remember to green Ktee, for her using all of hers to green pin this thread, nor for me, though I practically begged for just a few more. Get with the green karma program, please, people - use them as intended - to reward people you think are doing something good on GLP.

If it were someone here who upgraded me, please tell me so I may thank you properly. I am so grateful! Next month I will be more careful what I do with the karma. Have 300 green karma points sitting in attempts to upgrade friends, which wouldn't go through and cannot be put back into my own karma, even by admin. Only needed 17 more points to reach 100 to upgrade but those 17 were taking forever!

Again, if it was someone here, please tell me whom.
