Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Hey all~
I am making preps for a potential lights out scenario.
Tampa is fixin to get hit with high winds, lots of rain and I know this area is prone for lights out even in a T-storm sooo

We here have lots of stored canned goods, batteries of all kinds, flashlights and hanging batt operated lights, lanterns, oil lamps, crank solar radio (charged as of now),generator, extra propane, gas if need be.
Lots of water to last a week or so.

Blanching potatoes to keep for a quick breakfast and making coffee ahead of time and storing it in fridge to be re heated up later.
Making up other meals that can be re-heated easily. Should be pretty well set.

Have to say it feels good to have the necessities ready for what we planned for anyway. Tropical storms are a good basis to go by to be prepared and even if it was going to be a worse case scenario I would still feel pretty good.
We made it thru Irma with lights out for 3 days. Unfortunately didn't have a generator at that time and lost a good amount of food.

Will report back or in as soon as I can after to give an update.

{{Hugs all}} and Much Love~

Status? Do you now have a generator?

EDIT - I see you do. Let us know.

Bless you, KTee, and may our God keep you in safety and health.

How are things now? Has it passed you? And what happened?

Worries me greatly that you only have enough water for a week - and I do hope you mean five gallons per person per day! You need a great deal more water because of all the things which are headed for us at a great speed, not "just" a hurricane. Do you have a source for more water when that little bit runs out? And how many people around you are likely to be using that same source? Please see to collected a great deal more. Minimum three months, I would say.

Let us know how you are as soon as you are able, please.

Big hugs

Hey all~ <big smiles>

It was a walk in the park and I have made enough meals to last a few days.

I may start preppin meals like that just for normal days when don't feel like preparing an entire meal. LOL

Something tells me if we wouldn't of done what we did the power would of for certain gone out.
The wind kicked up quite a bit at times. We were a bit more inland and not that close to the coast.

My yard however looks like a civil war re-enactment. Lots of branches, leaves and part of the fence needs repair. Heard something last night go boom and it was the fence coming down. Kinda expected it. Seriously need a new one.

Definitely have quite a bit of water. Never will be enough if ya ask me. However, we do have plans to build a water catchment system very soon. I know.. should of been built yesterday lol

Thank you for blessings and well wishes.
ML and everyone is in my prayers hoping for the safety of all in these turbulent times.

Keeping a good store of what you need is also very practical no matter what.

I had a couple of crazy weeks and had to dip into the preps b/c no time or energy to shop. It helped to have everything I needed on hand. Topped things off and all well worth it.

Thinking about a second fridge or chest freezer since we have solar and tesla wall now!

What is that? Did you do it yourself? Inside or outside? Can I find something on youtube about it? Can I use old solar panels I have lying around not in use to incorporate in something like that?
FullSpectrum Survival had this to say today:

Of course he also talks about prepping, he always does.

I'd have better preps if I'd stay out of them myself but I haven't done because we've had serious cold already and I stayed in and snacked. I don't want to talk about how hard it is to find cans of meat, even online stores, so I have extra for the cats put away. The word is out! Doesn't matter if people are preppers or not. They're buying up everything in sight locally just because the whole country is on tenterhooks.

Washington and Oregon are back to full lockdown again as of today for a month, though I won't be surprised if it is continued through Christmas and longer.

A little birdy whispered to a few of us that martial law will begin in a week. I don't know how hard to lean on that one. We'll see, but meanwhile I suggest any preps you have left to do be done in that time frame, just cuz why not?

Michigan will instate extra restrictions on indoor gatherings beginning Wednesday. Of course this means no Thanksgiving beyond immediate family. No sports. High school students will switch to remote learning. No dine-in restaurant service.

It's supposed to be for three weeks but Michiganders pronounce that as "months" now.

Martial law would be a highly unusual response, not sure what the pretext would be to do that.

That's a good list! I want to see more of that cool white cat that strolls by every once in a while so I subscribed to this channel.
I saw this video about oxygen absorbers not long ago and it might come in useful for some of us, like when it's a bad idea to use them at all. I didn't realize we were risking botulism by taking the oxygen out in some foods!

About the bouillon cubes: I'm not sure I agree. Many years ago, a friend of my mother's used some chicken bouillon cubes she'd had in her kitchen cupboard just a little bit too long and ended up in the hospital with food poisoning. Maybe we all know more about storage now and have access to better equipment to do it with so it might not be such a danger but those cubes aren't really so dry anyway: they contain fats that go bad and chicken is one of the worst for that.

Do you separate the degrees of ripeness or deliberately combine them when processing?
 Quoting: Pooka

I combine them all for processing. Most commercial operations do as well.

Some will create specialty oils, in which there is a certain variety harvested 'green'. Koroneiki is popular for that, as it produces a sharp, peppery taste. Of course, they charge more money for oils like that.

This woman does some great food videos. Here are more "forever" foods to last and last. I don't subscribe to her, though I may. However I just watched a video in which she made limes, lemons and tangerines into fermented glories. Think I might go pick up fruit tomorrow - already have the canning salt.

ENJOY!

I made an olive oil lamp today. I had bought a few of these 'lamp kits' from Lehman's several years ago.

They contain wick supports and wicks to turn a jar or a bowl into a lamp.

It really does work well. I used a short square pint mason jar, but any jar or bowl will do.

The literature states that many vegetable oils will work for this. Olive, peanut, sunflower, canola, etc. Even has instructions for making your own wicks using cotton thread.

Depending on the efficiency of the pressing, the 'burritos' end up as nearly dry cakes about 3/8" thick.

They go into the compost.

Not sure if I have the rona or not...I haven't been tested.

The symptoms are very mild except for one. I wake up in the middle of the night with a tough time breathing because my lungs are plugged up with mucus.

If it weren't for ciggies I would never be able to cough the crud out.

But I went back to info I saved on a "cytokine storm"...it said to avoid:
- Dairy
- Chocolate
- Bananas
- And Micro Algae (which I have in my "Super Greens" nutrition powder).

I avoided those 4 things and poof...no more trouble breathing & no more waking up in the middle of the night.

I wanted to tell you guys just incase it happens to you...avoid those 4 things like the plague!

I have been having a lot of trouble with coughing up mucus for the past 5 years or so. My head is always congested and draining. Not 'yellow streamers', just clear mucus. It seems to originate in my sinuses

Of course, I have been a smoker for over 45 years.

I don't eat any of the things you listed. I just attribute it to the smoking.

I DONE IT! banana2

For years I've been thinking of getting one of those little $20 air compressors you plug into your cigarette lighter to inflate a tire.

I figured that the shit will hit the fan...electricity will go down so no air hoses at the gas stations will be working...and that's right when I'll need 15 pounds in one tire.

I saw one today at the hardware store & picked it up...it's safely in the back of my truck for when ever I might need it!

I carried one for years. I actually still have it. The rear air shock compressor from a 1980s Cadillac Eldorado. I rigged a hose and air chuck up to it along with a 12V cig lighter adaptor.

Saved my butt many times. It even worked well with a spark plug hole adaptor to keep the valves closed while changing valve springs.

Where can we get more of that info on cytokine storms? Interesting about the algae. I buy all sorts of green powders, whatever looks decent and is on sale for my own preps and I know that stuff is in some of it; fortunately for me, not all. I prefer to buy single ingredients that I can mix myself. That makes it easier to share with the cats too, since we can't always take the same things.

Bananas? Really? I guess they're kind of 'snotty' when you mash them up, lol. But so is slippery elm bark and that's one of the best anti-inflammatories I know. Dairy makes sense; it's usually the first thing you have to cut with sinus troubles. But chocolate? This list is so exotic I'll have trouble remembering it so I must know where you got it. Maybe understanding it better will keep it in my mind.
