Just read this and not allowed to say where. Many here have asked about insulin replacement - look for this - on your own responsibility:

"Search for 'Brazilian insulin bee tea'. Basically take 10 bees, freeze them to kill, then crush with a mortar and pestle. Into this while still hot dunk a tea bag as in making tea, right? Do this before meals. Many people in Brazil use this instead of insulin. Only one study done compared to artificial insulin, but results were that people's sugar levels were more stable with bee tea than insulin"
 Quoting: Pooka

You realize bees would be extinct in a year if people adopted this - right? Thereafter we would be dead.

I have a stainless steel pot with a glass lid. I wondered if it would act as a solar oven all by itself.

I put a half inch of water & an oven thermometer in it & set it in the sun.

The highest temp it reached was 150...but hey...if I need to boil water I'll use alot less fuel if the water starts at 150 as opposed to room temperature.

I'll bet I could reach a higher temp if I set the pot on some black cloth while out in the sun.

OK, perhaps this may help those who may need.

Get a small solar 400 watt setup, 1000 watt inverter, deep cycle battery and small RICE COOKER, (under $50, you can get a stainless steel pot and glass lid, uses less then 300 watts).

OK, when the sun is shining, do your cooking. Rice is a inexpensive food, oats, etc.

Rice cooker will also boil water for personal cleaning, coffee, etc.

CLean water and fully cooked food will keep you and yours to stay healthy.

Next get that garden going, or find a local farm/food source.

Every day another adventure.

Just an aside to storing these. They are a fried type of food and will last longer if you repackage them in mylar and an oxygen absorber.

The oils these are made with will go rancid.

Makes me WONDER about the real time frame of when foods are good.

Twice now I have used pasta that is way out of date.

Last night I used the oldest pasta, expired in 2012.

It cooked up fine & tasted fine.

This pasta was stored in original store package with a ziplock bag around it all.

Just sharing.

Just don't eat the flavor packs if they contain the flavor simulants monosodium glutamate, yeast extract, and/or hydrolyzed corn/soy/vegetable protein.

It might not affect you too bad every now and then but chronic ingestion of it has neurotoxic effects.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Thanks for bumping this very important thread.

I eluded to this before, but I think that the best strategy is to focus on perennials, especially for beginners. You don't need to replant every season and some perennials survive the cold (depends on your latitude) and produce throughout the year.

[link to morningchores.com (secure)]

The other thing you can do is make sure to have wild berries on your property. They grow like weeds and provide a readily edible form of nutrition that any outside invaders (who come to steal your food) would probably ignore. They also attract wildlife like deer, rabbits, squirrels and other edible meat if you are a hunter.

[link to practicalselfreliance.com (secure)]

If you have land and your area permits, I strongly recommend chickens. They're God's gift to man. They reproduce fast, they produce one egg each per day, and you can obviously eat them too for meat.

On top of that, they're great to help with composting. Take grass from the lawn being cut and any leaves, mix it with food from the kitchen (fruit shells, egg shells, things like that), mix it together and put it in the chicken coop. It attracts bugs that the chickens will eat (free food) and the chickens turn the remains into an amazing natural fertilizer that you can use for your garden.

Finally, I did something that maybe the rest of you might not want to do, or have land to do, but I created my own pond. It's small and it's stocked with fish. They reproduce well. You need energy to keep the water circulating and obviously it's a bit of an upfront investment, but to have a perpetual food supply it's totally worth it.

Great thread and excited to see more!!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Hi! Probably this was discussed in this thread already, but I couldn't find. I hope someone can inform me. I treated one tooth that demanded "canal" (it was rotten in the root), through inject (by syringe) water with the regular refined salt in it. I suffered very much with that huge pain during about 5 days, while during this, because I saw preppers telling that this could stop the pain and even cure after few days. HOWEVER, it was totally useless in my case and I ended up into the dentist.

Does anyone here know how to stop the toothache and treat this kind of problem without dentist???

I've had some limited success with tooth pain...but certainly NOT a cure of any kind.

Basically keep it real clean...brush...then floss...then use original listerine (yellow/amber color)...then brush again.

Swishing salt water in your mouth might help as well.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I have heirloom sweet corn (golden bantam)...only problem is the seed is 19 years old :( It'll be a miracle if any of it sprouts.

I dreamed up a new way to plant corn for this problem...I'll keep you posted if it works or not. I dug 4 shallow trenches and poured the seed in then covered them with soil. There are probably 3 seeds per inch. If I can get 1 seed out of 20 to sprout I should be OK and be able to save this variety of corn.

If many more sprout than I can thin them out later...but what will most likely happen is none of them will sprout.

Wish me luck!

Great point!

I've done this with rice, pasta, spam, soups, etc. I let my nose tell me if it's spoiled or not.

But I wouldn't risk it with something canned that is not acidic and doesn't contain any meat (say like a can of green beans)...then your nose might not tell you if it's spoiled.

Some WHEAT SHORTAGE was predicted around 1995.

I had purchased numerous white flour large bags.

Stored them in my kitchen, in a cabinet, just above floor level.

For several years, I kept using this flour.

Never noticing it was OUT OF DATE BY 3 YEARS.

I suspect food last longer than what we are being told by the "experts".

Always is. Medications as well. Built-in obsolescence, it's called. That's why cars and refrigerators and jeans don't last long now. Companies figured out if they continued making good products that last, they'd run out of customer base. Therefore either they made shoddy products with finite usage, or at the very least put expiration dates on items, suggesting bad things will happen to the consumer using these items after stated dates.

I messed around with the solar oven thing years ago. I used old satellite dishes. Primestar, C-Band, etc.

I glued aluminum foil to them with spray adhesive. The focal point would be right where the original LNB was located. Most already had the struts in the correct place.

Some of those things got damned hot!
