Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80417551 Last year my basil got a blight & all the leaves started turning brown. I was only able to harvest about half of it. This year the blight is worse and earlier...I wont get to harvest any of it. Before last year I have never seen this blight. Is your basil growing OK? I'm starting to suspect it's the sun...so I bought one more basil plant & planted it in a new spot about 30 feet away from my garden...we will see what happens. - MC I myself have not grown any herbs and when I do Basil will be one of the first I try for I love it so much. I found a vid online for growing that + 8 other types in a glass jar with water only? I can post it if you think you would be interested. The sun has been a bit more brutal in some places more than others. To me it just feels different..as in like more radiation. Hope you find out whats causing the issues. I use alot of basil & thyme in my spaghetti/pizza sauce & today i ripped 4 basil plants out of the ground and threw them in the trash can I still have enough time to plant 3 more (got 1 in already) but what if they just get blighted again? Been growing it for over 20 years & last year was the first of this problem I've ever seen. - MC |

This year was the first year that I lost three out of seven plants. I have no idea what the problem was but they were a different type of basil than what I normally plant. It is not Genovese basil it’s something different because the leaves are very small. I watched a cooking show and the chefs were wanting the tiny leaved Basil so it might just be the variety that is susceptible. I bought mine at the nursery. I planted from seed purple leaved basil and they grew great. This tiny leaved basil is cute and is great for pasta and such, you don’t have to cut them but if you want to make lots of pesto then you want the Genovese. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80573351 I figure alot of my meals will be beans mixed with a grain (rice or pasta). But with no refrigeration it's going to take lots of small meals being cooked...but beans need around a 6 hour soak time. I'll have to start soaking a half a cup of beans right before I go to bed so I can have some breakfast...and start soaking a half a cup of beans at breakfast time so I can have some dinner. I better buy a few more tiny pots with lids. No refrigeration would really suck! - MC I don’t think that will work. Beans take an hour and a half to three hours to fully cook depending on how old they are. That would be too much time energy and fuel wasted. Could you possibly can some now? Remember the nursery rhyme…peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, Peas porridge in a pot nine days old? I believe they just kept reheating them breakfast lunch and dinner and that way it would kill bacteria as well. But I’m not sure about that. Lol |

Did you return it or try to get it fixed? Quoting: Pooka Have you since tried a different one? The Baofeng is crap compared to other radios, it only good because of it's price point. If you're concerned with performance you'll be better off looking elsewhere. For a cheap handheld, I like the Radioddity GD-77. It does everything the boafeng does plus DMR. It even allows for encryption even though that is not legal on the ham bands. That said, the encryption only works with other GD-77 radios. Seems each manufacturer has implemented their own standard and as such nothing interoperates when encrypted. |

I'm on my 2nd year of using empty kitty litter buckets and it's working much better this year. I have better plants and the weather is cooperating, cooler and rainy with just enough sun. Imagine that! I got a bit of a late start because of the cold in NCentral Ohio, but the tomatoes are setting fruit, the zucchs have a ton of blossoms, as do the cukes. The roma's are iffy though. I've got an experiment bunch of celery going too. I finally have a good crop of rhubarb this year, too. Need to pull it off and get it into the freezer. |
